Q2. Faith in God's Future Promises

What is the significance of Abraham's faith in God's promises at the same time as he pays dearly for this small property. What does this tell us about faith?

I believe Abraham's faith was that he would be raised from this land and that earth would one day be the eternal home of Israel. I believe earth was the hope of the Israelites for eternity with the Lord their God and later on David as their regent. Ezek34:23,24. Abraham bought that land because it was the promised land for the Jews and this is where their hope was. Our hope is in the New Jerusalem with the Lord. We have a heavenly hope and they have an earthly hope.

He lived according to his faith.

God Bless!

Q2 (23:3-20) What is the significance of Abraham's faith in God's promises at the same time as he pays dearly for this small property? What does this tell us about faith?

Abraham trusted God's promises and obeyed. He paid for the land, for he knew that in order for it to truly belong to him and his posterity, he had to protect it from seizure when he died, as he obviously soon would.

Faith is not just sitting down and folding our hands, waiting for God to drop a fortune--or whatever--into our laps! He expects us to pray for inspiration as to what He requires us to do, then DO it! We are not to do whatever we desire without inquiring of Him as to His Will! That ends in debacle. But, if we ask of Him what He requires of us, He has promised to guide us--but only so long as we do as He asks! :)

2a.) (23:3-20) What is the significance of Abraham's faith in God's promises at the same time as he pays dearly for this small property? What does this tell us about faith?

2a.) His faith is not in the things that can be eaten by moths or rust. So, four hundred shekels is nothing to the priceless promise of the Creator God who gave him his son through Sara. And maybe he felt that four hundred shekels was nothing to pay to honor his beloved wife with a proper resting place.

2b.) (23:3-20) What does this tell us about faith?

2b.) Do not put your faith in things that are temporal, fleeting, a breath. Turn your eyes upon Jesus!

I am seeing this transaction to be "Prefigurative" of that to come.

Several things come to mind, like Jesus being born in a cave, even buried in one.

The field and the cave as a burial site, causes me to think of the Gentiles, and the price that was paid (Jesus' Blood, Suffering, Crucification on the Cross), and how He died once and for all, depositing our sins in hell, to redeem us into His self. We died in Him, that is our sin died in Him, that He may live in us. We are His temple.

God promised that this whole land will become his inheritance. But for that to to happen, some practical steps had to be taken. This step of purchasing the land for the burial led to the initial process of inheritance. Abraham was sure that in due course of time, the land will be his. He wanted to live in peace among the people. So he paid a small fortune for that small piece of land so that the Lord's promise will take effect through this step. The Lord works through humans. What has to be done, will be done, mostly through His designated workers. Sometimes, supernaturally, but most of the time, naturaly. Abraham's foresight is commendable. He believed that, ultimately, the whole land will come to his people. But in the process, he never gave importance to wealth. Wealth will come and go but the process of inheriting the Lord's promises will be his for sure. He took concrete steps to ensure that. Therein we see his immense faith in the Lord. :D

Abraham knew that one day the land would belong to all his descendents, so paying such a high price for a place to bury Sarah was worth it.

Also Abraham was extremely wealthy so to him, 400 shekals was probably considered "pocket change."

Finally, I believe he wanted to honor Sarah's legacy by provided the best burial place possible for her final resting place.

Abraham knew he could not accept the the land as a gift because legal title wouldn't pass to his heirs. He needed a place to bury Sarah so he was willing to pay the high price and he knew that God meant for this to be his burial ground. God had promised over and over that this territory was to be Abraham's.Through purchase and ownership it would go to his heirs.

What sticks out in my mind is the illustration, once again, that death comes before inheritance. Of course now through Christ Jesus, our battle is a spiritual one, putting to death daily our "self" (the flesh and former us) to let the life of the spirit of the Lord shine brighter. The death of our flesh leads us to the inheritance of the spirit, ever growing one day at a time. Just as the tomb and land were just a small start to something greater and larger.

Abraham's reward will be much greater in heaven. His faith grew much stronger and he solely relied on God finally.

Abraham had already left a life of material prosperity to follow God. I don't think that money was an issue for him as he had already demonstrated his reliance on God and not money. Abraham probably inquired of God before he made the purchase thus making the cost of it a non-issue as he was more intent on doing God's will. This shows that Abraham knew his faith was more precious than gold or silver and nothing is too costly when it comes to obeying God's will.

He pays for the property to satisfy the present situation but he still has faith that one day it will all be his and his descendents anyway.

Heb 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

NASU

Even though Abraham did not see God's promis he was convinced of its truth

Abraham still had faith in God's promise but at this time needs being immediate he followed the laws of the land at that time it was proper since God still calls for us to follow the laws of our day. Abrahams faith was such that God would restore whatever price he paid for the land in future blessing and wealth as he had in times past, Abraham never doubted that.

Through Issac, Abraham sees God afar and knows that He is faithful. Money and riches are nothing compared to the promises of the Father. Abraham is faithful.

Abraham demonstrates that faith grows by experience, living by the word of God. If we don't grow in the word, we won't grow in faith. Abraham lived by the word, through his direct communion with Yahweh, and grew in faith proportionately.

Q2 (23:3-20) What is the significance of Abraham's faith in God's promises at the same time as he pays dearly for this small property? What does this tell us about faith?

I think Abraham's faith remained strong. He knew God had given him the money he had and it was used to purchase a burial place. God gives us material things to use for His glory and to follow His will.

This tells us Abraham used his money to satisfy what he felt was important and this was a burial place for Sarah and for himself in the land of Cannan.

Abraham hld on to the promise of God, his faith never waivered. He knew that God had made a promise, and judging from pass experiences, he was aware that the possession of the land was not yet but will be. At the present time he just wanted to bury his wife.

Abraham never entered or inherited the promised land , except for the token deal of buying the Cave of machpelah , even though for the limited purpose of buril space and rights . His Faith in God was much more stronger, higher and deeper than the small/big price for the cave !!!!!!
