The significance of the Ark in the Holy of Holies is its representation of a place where the sins of the people were forgiven and a place where the Presence of God was located. What did it represent? It represented the place where God dwelt among His people on earth. Why was it considered so holy? It was considered to be so holy because it was where God, who is Holy, said that His Presence would be among His people. If no one really sat upon it, why was it so important? It contained the tablet on which was written the Ten Commandments. This represented God's covenant with His people Israel. What did it represent? Sacrifices, purging, atonement. The portable throne of Yahweh. Why was it considered so holy? It is where God communicated with the priests. If no one really sat upon it, why was it so important? Separated the common area from the Holy area. The Holy of Holies was a symbol (a copy of God's Heavenly throne, see Heb ) where God, who is aboslute holiness sat on his throne. Absolute holiness cannot be marred by the touch or presence of anything or anyone who is less than purely holy. That's what an absolute is... 100% pure. So who could enter there? Only the priest on the day he confessed sins for all the people. (The Day of Atonement or Yom Kippur) What does this mean for us? Through Jesus' death on the cross and ultimate sacrfice we have been made holy enough to experience the presence of The Most HOLY God. We, who sin daily and who have fallen fall short of the glory of God, have been purified to the extent that we can approach the Holy of Holies, God himself, and live. This "throne" represented God's throne in Heaven, like I said, and it contained some of God's memerobilia-Aaron's rod that flowered, and of course the Ten Commandments. The presence of God was in this throne room, and only one person could go in there, and only once a year could this one person-the High Priest-go in there. It represented mercy and the giving of the covenant and commandments--later to contain memorials from the 40yr walk. It's representation was very real. No one can come close to God unless He approves them. They were not allowed in that room unless it was the time the Lord gave commandment to come. The Ark of the Covenant was the physical representation of the presence of God. It contained two pieces of physical evidence of the miracles God performed in delivering the people of Israel from bondage in Egypt. Because God is a Spirit the people needed a physical thing to focus on when worshiping the invisible God. Why was it considered so holy? Because it was symbolically the throne of God among His people. If no one really sat upon it, why was it so important? Well for starters, because God declared it so! The Ark was the link between the physical world and Heaven, an earthly representation of God's throne in Heaven. That's why it . . and every piece of furniture in the Tabernacle . . had to be made exactly according to the instructions God gave Moses. The Scriptures say that God would meet His people their above the top, between the Cherumbim wings. It represented the throne of God, a copy of the one in Heaven. The presence of God would come down and "sit" on the Ark to give instructions to Moses and where the high priest would offer sacrifices for sin. It was holy because of God's presence. And when He wasn't there, no one could enter the Holy of Holies. The gold plate between the Cherubim was the place that blood sacrifices were put once a year for the sin of the people. It was the equivalent of an Earthly throne of God and was the mercy seat and seat of reconciliation. The Ark housed most holy items. The ten Commandments, manna from Heaven and Aaron's Rod. Only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies and only once a year, so it was a dedicated place for that which is very Holy. It represented God's presence with His people and God's mercy. It was considered most Holy because it was representative of God's dwelling place in Heaven. Even if no person sat on it, God's spirit was there and He offered mercy and reconciliation to the people through the Hifh Priest there. Because God is a Holy God and cannot be in any defiled place, it is holy. I do not think it could stand before a Holy God if it was not. God did not actually sit on it, it was merely a representation of His Holy Throne, but it did signify His presence. It is the place He designed to meet with His people. The ark was placed in the Holy of Holies, where sinful mankind could not approach. And only the High Priest could enter once a year on the day of Atonement, shielded by the specified blood sacrifice. Even this was not taken lightly, as he had a rope tied to his ankle, lest he die. He could be pulled out without the loss of life of the rescuer. What did it represent? It represented the portable throne of God...His earthly place to dwell with men. Why was it considered so holy? It contained the books of His Holy law. It was covered by His mercy seat. It was the representation of His perfect Holiness, righteousness and justice, wrapped up in the Covenant He made with His people, "signed" in innocent, sacrificial blood . If no one really sat upon it, why was it so important? Just as the wayward Israelites wanted a gold calf, a visible symbol, to lead them, the Ark of the Covenant "contained" the Holy God who would lead them through the wilderness. Though they could not see it, they knew God (his visible representation) was leading them. (The type and shadow of Jesus, the visible representation of the invisible God of the New and better Covenant who leads us daily) He said "Make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them" Ex 25:8, then gave the instructions for building the Ark, which was so Holy it could not be touched, v 15, but rather carried on the shoulders of the Levites by poles inserted through rings attached to the Ark. It was the sanctury of the Lord, His personal place to dwell and talk with only the appointed people that met the qualifications to be in His presence. Any sin in a persons life, met death when it tried to enter into the presence of thr Lord. The highly decorated, beautifully fashioned ark kept the charter of the nations relationship with God. The mercy seat that was on the lid, was meaning atone for. The mercy seat was the lid for the ark as well as the base on which the cherubim were to be placed. He was with them, but seperate as no one could look upon Him and live. 2. It represented God. A place of atonement for sins, and a place of worship of God. 3. God gave them explicit directions on how He wanted the whole temple built, with the ark in the center and made of the most precious metals, a fitting place for our God. His being gave it the Holiness. 4. How do we know no one sat on it? God designed it for Himself. It gave the Israelites a visual object to center on instead of a spiritual being. Of the exact configuration of the camp of the Israelites, it is not possible to speak with certainty. The camp of Israel in the wilderness seems to have been quadrilateral, although some have supposed it to be round or triangular (Numbers 2:1). The camp in the wilderness was furnished with ensigns and standards--the family ensign ('oth), and a standard (deghel) for the group of tribes occupying each of the four sides. The sons of Levi stood between the sanctuary and the other tribes to represent the fact that Jesus stands between God and us so that His wrath falls on them before it falls on us. But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. No one sat upon it because it is where the Israelites relates to the presence of their holy God.It teaches them to be obedient and it was designed for as God's holy throne, and the Israelites came upon it to meet with the Holy God.
