Joseph's characture can only be that of what it states in the text. He is a righteous man who obeys what God directs him to do. He seems to be a devout Jewish man who believes in the importance of following the direction of God, not man. The significance of Jesus' naming by Joseph is that by doing so, Joseph in effect "adopts" Jesus by semetic law into his (Joseph's) lineage, thus bringing Jesus in line with David. In doing so, Jesus is no of the lineage of David and thus prophecy is fulfilled.

Joseph, in naming the child, (Jesus), acknowledges him as his own son and thus becomes the legal father of the child according to Semitic law. As a result of this legal adoption, Joseph's ancestry as a descendent of David transfers also to his legal son. Biologically, Jesus is begotten by the Holy Spirit and is thus the "Son of God" (Luke 1:32a), but legally he is the son of Joseph and heir to the promises of David, Joseph's ancestor.

It had been fortold that Jesus would be from David's bloodline.
Joseph named the child what the angel told him to name the child.
God wanted Jesus to have that name because it fit Him. He does save mankind from their sins.

The fact that Joseph named the child Jesus again shows Joseph's character. He accepted the situation and didn't question it. He accepted the child as his own and would raise Him as his child.

Joseph is chose by God to father Jesus. A man who was devout, full of faith obedient to God, just, merciful, and one who loved and carefully guarded both Mary and the Child Jesus.
By Joseph naming Jesus, he knowledges Him as his own son and thus becomes the legal father of the child according to Semitic Law. As a result of this legal adoption, Joseph's ancestry as a descendent of David transfers also to his legal son. Biologically, Jesus is begotten by the Holy Spirit and is thus the "Son of God," but legally he is the son of Joseph and heir to the promises of David, Joseph's ancestor. In Joseph naming the boy, and therefore adopting him, David becomes Jesus' earthly ancestor.

about his character? What is the significance for prophetic
fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David that Joseph "named" the
child "Jesus"?
Joseph is a person who was sensitive to God’s guidance and willing to do God’s will no matter what the consequence. Although others may have disapproved of his decision, Joseph went ahead with what he knew was right. Sometimes we avoid doing what is right because of others might think. Like Joseph, we must choose to obey God rather than seek approval of others.
Joseph is a descendant of David, God had promise David that He will rise His descendant to His throne who will rule for ever.

The Messiah had to come from the line of David in order for the prophecies to be fulfilled and the Messiah is God Himself. In naming the child Jesus and accepting Him as his own Joseph became the vehicle by which God was able to do as He has foretold.

It shows courage in his character! And that he cared more about pleasing God then men!
Dr Ralph says it very well re Joseph naming Jesus:
“Joseph is commanded to personally name17 the child. This is deeply
significant. It means that Joseph, in naming the child,
acknowledges him as his own son and thus becomes the legal father
of the child according to Semitic law. As a result of this legal
adoption, Joseph's ancestry as a descendent of David transfers
also to his legal son.18 Biologically, Jesus is begotten by the
Holy Spirit and is thus the "Son of God" (Luke 1:32a), but legally
he is the son of Joseph and heir to the promises of David,
Joseph's ancestor.”

What does Joseph accepting Mary as his wife say about his character?
Joseph, no doubt took this troubling matter to God in prayer. He was not hasty to judge or to react with hurt and anger. God rewarded him not only with guidance and consolation, but with the divine assurance that he had indeed called Joseph to be the husband of Mary and to assume a mission that would require the utmost faith, confidence, and trust in Almighty God. Joseph believed in the divine message to take Mary as his wife and to accept the child in her womb as the promised Messiah. Like Mary, Joseph is a model of faith for us. He is a faithful witness and servant of God's unfolding plan of redemption. We must be ready to believe in the promises of God, even when faced with perplexing circumstances and what seems like insurmountable problems.
What is the significance for prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David that Joseph "named" the child "Jesus"?
Emmanuel is a transliteration of the Hebrew name in Isaiah 7:14, literally "with us is God," originally symbolizing the presence of God to deliver his people from the Assyrian army that threatened their very existence in Isaiah's day. The name Jesus applied to him, since "God with us" is a perfect way to describe the birth of the God-Man, Jesus Christ, who is fully man and fully God.

When Joseph named Him Jesus, it automatically put him in the lineage of David.

Joseph was a righteous, devout, obedient, faithful, servant of God and he carefully observed the law. He was obedient and did exactly what the angel of God told him to do. He was a good husband and father and he protected his family. He was chosen by God and lived to prove his faithfulness.
In Luke it tells of how Joseph lineage was a direct descendant of David and of whom the Messiah would come. Jesus was begotten of the Holy Spirit and is the "Son of God" but legally according to law he was the son of Mary and Joseph and heir to the promises of David through Joseph whom was a direct descedant of David and Abraham fulfilling the prophecy.

joseph in taking mary as his wife proved he believed what the angel said about who it was she was carrying and he wanted to please God more than man by accepting the role set for him . i see him as compasionate ,just and obedient.after the reality of the situation was explained by the angel he accepted mary never judging her again. and in naming the child Jesus joseph accepted Jesus as his own son. becoming the legal father according to their law so effectively transfering his lineage which was of david to his legally adopted son Jesus. so the prophecy about the messsiah being of Davids line was fulfilled

Joseph accepting Mary as his wife shows that he was compassionate person who cares about others and following what the Lord told him to do. Joseph took Jesus as his son meant that he legally adopted him into his heritage--in which Joseph's line come King David (Son of David). Joseph did as the angel asked him to do and Joseph has been known as the father of Jesus.

about his character?
The scriptures tell us, Joseph was a righteous man. Righteousness is the character of God and our source is found in Him. Righteousness is seen first in mans relationship with Almighty God and than with other people. Joseph sought the best for Mary. Joseph's righteousness is seen in his character, looking for a peaceful means to this devastating situation, not only for Mary, the women he loved, but for himself also, for his dream was falling apart.
When our dreams are falling apart, is our character still showing the love of God? This is what I want, even if He slay me, yet will I trust Him. We serve an awesome God!
What is the significance for prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David that Joseph "named" the child "Jesus"?
The prophetic fulfillment to the prophecy in Isaiah could have been a fulfillment at that time, however, THE FULFILLMENT was completed in the birth of Jesus, as seen in His geneology, because Joseph named his son - Jesus, a sign that God was with them.
