It is easy to say we love God when that love doesn't cost us anything more than weekly attendance at a religious service. But the real test of our love for God is how we treat the people in front of us--- Our church brothers and sisters, how we deal with mistreatment or offenses from someone, How we deal with attitudes towards fellow believers. We cannot truly love God while neglecting to forgive and settle things peaceablely with out being angry. Anger is a sin the can put murder in our heart if we do not submitt our thoughts to The Holy Spirit. We must let our mind be transformed into the mind of Christ. I always ask myself what would Christ do, and then pray that the Holy Spirit will help me put the flesh under the Blood of Jesus Amen

I believe the over all theme here is forgiveness and reconcilliation. Bringing onesself right with those earthly hinderences to a solid and intimate relationship with God. These things are like slivers...when you get a sliver, if you don't get it out right away, it becomes infected...this leads to all sorts of disease and discomfort, and could eventually lead to amputation or death. If left alone, these grievences against ourselves or others will continually separate us from God, further and further, until we are so bitter and resentful that we have edged God our of our lives completely. God is Love...we cannot have love if we have hatred in our hearts (1 Corinthians 13:4-13).

Verses 12-22~ Jesus is talking about bringing upon yourself in a big way from God. Verses 23-24~ Jesus is talking about first go and be reconciled tp your brother/sister then come and offer your gift at the altar. To me the overarching theme of Jesus' teaching in our entire passage, verses 21-26 is showing love and respect to God and to other people.

Love. The final answer to all the previous verses are to Love the Lord your God with all your heart and and with all your soul, and with all your mind. If we work in the spirit of love all things will come to us who love God and who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28).

These are heart problems. We need the Holy Spirit to clean us up on the inside & keep our accounts clean with God & our brothers & sisters. We don't show love when we sin against them. Shalom

I believe that Jesus is teaching us that we need to have pure hearts to come to and worship the Father and the only way we can have clean hearts is to not beholding any thing against another and to not be causing anyone to be holding anything against us. We must learn and practice forgiveness and not keep our brother from doing the same thing.

1) He's teaching about harmonious horizontal relationships....Because we love God with all of our heart, soul and Mind, we are to love our neighbor as our self. We come to Him to be filled with His love, then we can love those around us as He does.

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
God gave Moses His law with the Spirit of the law intact, but when he came down off the mountain and shattered the first two tablets, which were written with God's own finger the Spirit of the law was also broken. God then instructed Moses to rewrite the law by his hand and what was given then was the letter of the law. The overreaching theme here is the restoration of the Spirit of the law wich supercedes the letter of the law. The Spirit of the law can be found in these two commandments Matt. 22:37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' The entire passage is telling us to build good relationship with God and others. We should avoid anger and hatred.
Our attitudes towards others reflects our relationship with God.

I believe the main theme of Jesus' teaching in all of these verses is "Love". Put God first -- Love Him with all of your heart, soul and mind - and secondly, as Jesus taught, "Love your neighbor/fellowman as yourself.
If the world were revolving around this kind of love, that puts God first and all others as our equals, then anger, insult and even murder would be non-existent, and all problem areas would be solved with each other through mutual respect of others positions in life, and never have a need to go to court (where a lot of extra trouble can start).

" 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments" (Matthew 22:36-40).

Verses 21-22 are about murder, anger, and insult. Verses 23-24 discuss some fault against one's brother. Verses 25-26 discuss settling a civil suit before going to court. What is the overarching theme of Jesus' teaching in our entire passage, verses 21-26?
In this particular passage we see how murder comes to be. If the general attitude toward another is scornful ("You fool"), and events cause anger in the heart, murder results...or at least it becomes more likely. This strikes me as psychologically true. Jesus is not trying to make life harder by expanding the commandments to our attitudes and emotions. He is simply trying to show the psychological truth that our actions, good or bad, begin with the attitudes of our hearts. Better to tackle the problem at the source...with the negative attitude, dealing with the anger by trying to directly resolve the conflict and being reconciled to someone. Then there will be fewer irreversible actions to worry about.
Jesus is seeking those who do not let anger and hatred live in their hearts at all. He is seeking those who will show mercy, those who will forgive, those who will, in a word, love.

The overarching theme of Jesus' teaching in our entire passage, verses 21-26 is that we must love the Lord with our whole being. You cannot give half and half, you must give the whole. We must always remember that Jesus came to bring us the law and the love that flows from it.
