Jesus is not a created being. He was not one in a series of created creatures, each created by the one before, as some believed. He existed in eternity before anything was created. To be called "firstborn of all creation" meant He holds the special status of preeminence and headship over everything in heaven and on earth that He created.

Verses 16-17 teach us:

1) All things were created by Christ.

a. in heaven and on earth

b. visible and invisible

c. thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities of any type

2) All things were created through Christ and for Christ.

a. He existed before all things.

b. He is first among all things.

c. He holds all things together.

Christ pre-existed creation. He created all things for Himself and His glory. Revelation 4:11 proclaims, Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created. He directs and maintains it, holding it together for the purpose of His glory and honor.

Jesus is not a created being. According to His own words in John 8:58, "before Abraham was born, I am!" Christ is "preeminent" or superior to all created things. Not only was Jesus present at creation, "all things", physical and spiritual, "were created by Him and for Him." More than that, "in Him" all things are held together. He is the glue that keeps it all in place. I remember hearing of something called "laminin" a protein that holds the body together. Electron microscopes have given us an image of this protein. It's shaped like a cross. - Look it up!

In re-reading Col 1:15-20 I noticed the repeated use of the word “all.” Sometimes little words are important. In my dictionary, “all” means “all.” Jesus is supreme over ALL.

15 - Jesus is “firstborn over all creation.”

16 – “by Him all things were created.”

16 – “all things were created by Him and for Him.”

17 – “He is before all things.”

17 – “in Him all things hold together.”

19 – “God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Him.”

20 – “Through Him God will reconcile all things.”

Q2. (Colossians 1:15b-17) What does "firstborn of all creation/every creature" mean? Is Jesus a created being? If not, what does "firstborn" mean here? What do verses 16-17 teach about Jesus' pre-existence? What does verse 16b teach about the purpose of creation? According to verse 17, what is Jesus' past role in creation? What is his present role in creation?

He was born or begotten before all the creation, before any creature was made.

Jesus is not created being Christ existed before anything else and is the firstborn of those resurrected.

Verses 16-17 teaches that Jesus had a being before the world was made, before the beginning of time, and therefore from all eternity.

The whole creation is kept together by the power of the Son of God, and made to consist in its proper frame. It is preserved from disbanding and running into confusion.

No, Jesus is not a created being. Firstborn of all creation means He was prior to all creation. He actually participated in creation and all creation was for Him and through Him for His glory and rule. He has supremacy over it all. He was the beginning of all things and was the firstborn from among the dead through His resurrection. He is before everything and in Him all things hold together. Jesus present role is the head of His body, the church. In Him and through Him we have our being. Christ is all. Christ is all.

"Firstborn" is used as a title, claim to authority and inheritance, and as a position in the order of all things.V16-17 reveals truths found in the Gospel of John confirming the supremacy, authority, and holiness of Jesus Christ as the Word of God made flesh.Through the person of Jesus Christ we can be transformed by His Grace through faith, and love,if we hold steadfast to the Truth revealed in Him,and keep His commands in our hearts.

"Firstborn of all creation" means that Jesus ia preeminent - that He is the Author or Initiator of all creation physical and spiritual. . .

Jesus is NOT a created being - He is the sum total of all creation. . .

Jesus ia the Creator of all things and they exist to serve and glorify Him. . .

Jesus is eternal, He has always existed and is the Creator of all things including all spiritual beings (angels, good and bad) - He is also the reason that things yet exist. . .

Is Jesus a created being?

No

If not, what does "firstborn" mean here?

Jesus has preeminence over all creation, meaning He stands out above all things because of superiority

What do verses 16-17 teach about Jesus' pre-existence?

Jesus created what is visible and invisible (to us). Though there is much debate, the visible creation (earth et al) is thousands to millions of years old and the invisible creation predates the visible. Therefore, Jesus as Creator existed before all things.

What does verse 16b teach about the purpose of creation?

All things have been created for Him

According to verse 17, what is Jesus' past role in creation?

Creator of all things

What is his present role in creation?

Sustainer of all things

Q2. (Colossians 1:15b-17) What does "firstborn of all creation/every creature" mean?

Jesus is preeminent over ALL created beings.

Is Jesus a created being?

No, He created all that exists.

If not, what does "firstborn" mean here?

The preeminent one...the One with the most honor and authority and responsibility and inheritance.

What do verses 16-17 teach about Jesus' pre-existence?

He has always existed and all things which exist were created by Him and to serve Him. Ps. 119:91 says that ALL things serve Him....so even Satan in trying to steal, kill and destroy God's creatures, ends up serving God, in spite of himself...he's on a short leash, in other words.

What does verse 16b teach about the purpose of creation?

Everything was created by Him, in Him and for Him.

According to verse 17, what is Jesus' past role in creation? What is his present role in creation?

In the past He created all things. In the present all things cohere and are held together by Him.

Jersus as the firstborn over all creation is that he is "preeminent" or over all things. Jesus as the firsborn is as with God in Genesis that he created all things. Jesus was part of the creation of all things, all peoples, all leaders and all authority. Jesus as part of the Trinity since the beginning of earth is part of creation.

His present role is the new covenant and the Savior to mankind after taking the form of man. He has been the beginning, the past and now is the future. The living God.
