Q3. Subordination of the Son

Recommended Posts

  • 4 months later...

What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?

God is God!  No matter label is put on God, He is still God!  I believe that God put these designation in the Bible for our sake.  People would not understand that God the Father died on the cross or even that God could become a man. We worship ONE GOD only!  So in order that we could make the connection, God is calling the Son, Jesus, to provide us with a way to be redeemed.  We understand what it means to be in subordination under someone, therefore God used these terms concerning the "relationship between Him and the Son".

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

As we know that the "Doctrine of the Trinity" is man made.  Therefore, are assuming too much about God?  Or even the question, "Do people fully understand who God is?"  We believe in the "Father - Son - Holy Spirit, must we go beyond that in "knowing it all"?

the doctrine of the Trinity declares that the Father and Son and Holy Spirit are equal in Person, but the Son and Holy Spirit are subordinate in role -- "ontological equality, but economic subordination," that is, "equal in being, but subordinate in role.(notes) just as in a family, the father andthe heir are equal as far as preserving the families continuity but the father's role is more important at the present. Take the queen and her son Charles, her role is supreme but his is just as important for continuity purposes.

Jesus is in subjection to His Father.  Together they achieve what God wants to achieve.  They act together.

Equal in being, but subordinate in roles.

The doctrine of the Trinity declares that God is three in one. Though one God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are also separate beings with differing roles.

They are equal because all are one, yet they reveal their own individual aspects too. The Father sent the Son to fulfill the plan for salvation and no greater honor is given to anyone, from the Father, anywhere except to the Son. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. But still, the Son always remained in the Father and everything Jesus shared with us was because He heard it from the Father. He submitted to the Father's will and plan and He allowed the Father's will to be His purpose. He always honors the Father. The Holy Spirit, is the advocate, sent by the Father but in Jesus' name. He teaches us all things and helps us to remember all the Jesus taught. He is the spirit of truth and again, like Jesus did, tells us what He hears. He testifies as to Jesus. The Holy Spirit lives in us as the Spirit of Jesus.

It's this wonderful oneness of three, all working together, honoring and esteeming the other. I don't see this as anyone being lesser than the other, but as God showing His character of complete humbleness, lived out in the Three in One. It reminds me, (Thank you Holy Spirit) that we were taught to esteem each other as more important than ourselves and God, in His good and faithful character, lives that out right before our eyes! Amazing!!!

1 Corinthians 15:24-28
Q) . What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?
A) . This passage teaches us that the Son shall be subject unto God. "And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all." (15:28)

A) . This passage is consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity declares that the Father and Son and Holy Spirit are equal in Person, but the Son and Holy Spirit are subordinate in role -- "ontological equality, but economic subordination," that is, "equal in being, but subordinate in role." That understanding of equality and role is apparent in the very words "Father" and "Son."

Q3. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28) What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?

Jesus fully man and fully God while on earth, subjected Himself in total submission and subordination to His Father, as He lived out the demonstration of how we were meant to live and love before the Fall of Adam. When the time on earth is completed for "mankind", Jesus will deliver the kingdom over to His Father...having  abolished every other authority and power, including death. Jesus reigns Supreme, as the Father has put all things under the feet of Jesus, and all is subject to Him...(except  the Father Himself), then Jesus will  again subordinate Himself to the Father, so that God may be all in all. All equal with different roles accomplishing the same purpose.

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

The three in One God, function in perfect unity and harmony, each with their own functions to accomplish, never competing for preeminence nor power, as  they work together to redeem all that was lost in the Fall of man. In Gen. 1:1 the Triune God (Elohim) formed, fashioned and created the heavens and the earth. In Gen 1:26 God said "Let US (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) make mankind in Our image after Our likeness and let them have complete authority over all the earth."  When Adam rebelled,  that authority was handed over to Satan, and now the Triune God is redeeming creation rather than starting over....in the same precision, love, harmony and planning as went into creation.

The same is true in Salvation...the Father chose and called me  and gave me to Jesus as His love gift (before the foundation of the world was formed). The Holy Spirit wooed me and introduced me to Jesus when the time was right. When I accepted His gift, Jesus redeemed, cleansed and forgave me, and gave me to the Father as His love gift.(That makes me smile...I was "re-gifted") Now Jesus is in Heaven at the right hand of the Father, and the Holy Spirit lives in me. Perfect plan and  precision..the three working in perfect unity for the purpose of redeeming my life and yours. What a Majestic and Wonderful God we love and serve!!!!

What I must learn from Jesus is humility,

"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing...." (Philippians 2:6-7a)

Subordination, placing myself under another person, is hard for my pride. But it follows the consistent example of Jesus -- even at the end. Hallelujah!

Q3. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28) What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?

It is a non discussion; He is the "very nature of God..."

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?  God is "all that."

Q3. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28) What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father? How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

All things were created and are sustained by Christ, He stepped down from heaven in order to reconcile all men to God by proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. After His death, resurrection and ascension into heaven He is seated at the right hand of God. The Father has put all things under Christ feet until He has defeated the devil. Then Christ will present the Holy Church to the Father and the Church and Christ will be all in all with the Father.

God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit are part of a triad, the Son and Holy Spirit being subordinate to the Father, Christ stepped down from heaven and humbled Himself to be obedient to God unto death. the Holy Spirit has the work of glorifying Christ by convicting man of his sin and leading the individuals to Christ.

These explanations seem kind of crude, but I hope it gets the point across to work of Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Q3. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28) What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?

All things are put under the Son, (God the Father is the exception) the Son is under subordination to the Father in order to defeat the enemies that are challenging God's sovereign rule over the universe that will bring peace and prosperity; to be under "SUBORDINATION" reflexively means to obey.

The Son came to do the "WILL OF THE FATHER", it is because of His subordination to the Father that I, we, are able to give praise as we reflect on God's promise to us in (Revelation 5:1-9) In the right hand of God the Father who sits upon his throne is a book, and it is sealed with seven seals, an angel asks in a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the book, and to lose its seals, but all that is heard is much weeping, for  "NO" man in heaven, in earth, under the earth is able to open the book, or even to look in it; Because there is no hope, the cry becomes louder, "NO" man is found "WORTHY" to open and read the book, until out of the cry is heard one of the elders who said, "Cry no more for the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals".

This is the reason we can rejoice, it is because of the Son's "SUBORDINATION"- His "OBEDIENCE" to the Father that hope has risen, for in the midst of the throne is standing a "Lamb", a Lamb that looked as if it had been slain, instead of a "CRY" of sorrow, there is heard a new song, singing, Thou are worthy to take the book, and to open the seals, for you were slain, and hast redeemed us to God by the blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people and nation, this is the song of every believer, as our lives must show forth the song that lives within, "Worthy is the Lamb, blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto God the Father who sits upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, forever and ever".

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

The Son and the Holy Spirit are equal with the Father except in position and authority.

In the Son lives the fullness of all that God is, (Isa 9:6) For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

The Son existed before all things, and he holds everything together, He is the essential and eternal element of the inner nature of God, Timelessly and eternally the Word of "God, who became flesh in Yeshua the Messiah.

(John 1:1-4) in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

The Son is the radiance of the Sh'khinah, the very expression of God's essence, upholding all that exists by his powerful word; and after he had, through himself, made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, the Greatness on High. J

Q3. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28)

What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

God has established one person’s subordination to another for there to be order and for different supportive roles to be done. So we have Christ as the head of every man, and the man as the head of a woman, and God as the head of Christ. This is all done in love and not one person being superior to the other. Man and woman are equal in all respects and only have different roles to perform. In the same way, each person of the Godhead are co-equal and co-eternal but have different functions. For example, all 3 persons were involved in creation. The same applies to salvation. Here we have God the Father planned salvation; God the Son executed salvation on the Cross; God the Holy Spirit reveals the message of salvation. So the 3 persons of the Trinity are equal but again have different roles to perform. Each is fully God and have the same attributes – infinitely wise, infinitely loving, infinitely holy, and so forth. If women do not submit to men, we will find family and society falling apart. Without Christ having submitted to the Father’s will there would not have been the redemption of mankind, and equally so without our submitting to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ we would not be spending eternity with Him.

Equal in person but subordinate in His present role.

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

Each member of the Trinity has a role to play in the unfolding plan that when complete  everything will be perfect again.

1. In our lesson for this section of verses, I found applicable comments and Scripture references:Ephesians 1.20-22 – and God placed all things under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church…and these functions and that appointed role was not only for that present age but for the ones to come…

2. Christ’s role as Messiah and his purpose to destroy the devil and his works was over these adversaries and being the Christ He was not only over all but was simultaneously seated with the Spirit and the Father in the heavenly realms.

3. In so far as the Trinity is concerned, it is Biblically-taught in the matchless Word of God about the equality of the Three-in-One but the roles differ which by necessity reflects subordination in terms of the roles/functions. But I do  not see the waters muddy here but clear when viewed in terms of the equality is “not” diluted by the differing roles but adds to the overall spirituality and meaning of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Even in the husband-wife discussion, the subordination roles try to be diluted by people today, objecting to being subordinate to someone else.  Each have their roles that add to the relationship, not deter from it.

4. I see the overall similarities of these two types of relationships adding to the credibility/effectiveness/meaning of the whole (Trinity/Husband-Wife) even if the roles are different.

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all the same, part of the Trinity, except in position and authority.  Each person of the Trinity has its function but are still part of the whole. When we accept Christ as our Savior we instantly receive the Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Guide.  God s our Father unto whom, all authority is given.  But to reach the Father, the commandments all state that we have to go through Jesus. The Holy Spirit guides us; Jesus as our Savior can also intervene, but we still have access to God through each or all parts.

So as our notes state, we can “stand firm in the spirit, in Jesus or in God as a person of complete faith in the gospel without fear or concerned about opposition because God will see us through.

Q3. (1 Corinthians 15:24-28)

What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father?

How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity?

The Son has a role to fulfill and will do this as Messiah (subject to God the Father), reigning over the Kingdom, and when all enemies , the final one being Death, are destroyed, and all things are subject to Him then He will also become subject to the ONE (GOD THE FATHER), Who had originally put all things under Him,(God the Son).

When you look at a crystal/diamond. Holding it up to the light, different colors reflect. It is still the exact same diamond just looks different as you turn it.

Just so, God still remains God, be it in the role of Father, Son or the Holy Spirit.  He is still God.

Jesus subordinated himself to God, willingly, when He came to earth as a man and then took the sins of the world on his shoulders at the crucifixion.

After he went back to the father, after the three days leading up to his resurrection, he became an equal partner in trinity, again.

These are mysterious ideas that are too big for me to comprehend. Somehow, He is equal but was man, for awhile. Somehow the three are one. Somehow Jesus is both man and God, or was man and is God.

Ideas this big have to be accepted not pondered.
