(John 17:4-5) What was Jesus’ preexistent glory like? What was his glory like during his earthly ministry? How did his glory peek through? What is his glory like now in the presence of his Father? Why do you think Jesus wants his disciples to see him in this glory (verse 24)?

Jesus's pre-existent glory and His glory now sitting at the right hand of the Father (Revelations 4:11-13) - "Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”. Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!”

During His earthly ministry, Jesus shed His heavenly glory and became a man who walked the dusty roads of Palestine, speaking in its villages, healing its sick and casting out demons. He was abused and finally executed in great shame and disgrace. However, His glory peeked through - the glory of the Son's obedience and the Father's divine love that brings redemption to humanity.

Jesus wanted His disciples to see Him in this glory so that they can really and truly see Him for what He is i.e. God and appreciate the great pain and sacrifice He went through for our salvation and redemption.

Q3. (John 17:4-5) What was Jesus’ preexistent glory like?

His glory was as that of the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Creator God worshipped and glorified with unspeakable glory, majesty and honor by all of the Heavenly host.

What was his glory like during his earthly ministry?

His glory was veiled in human flesh. (Just as the wilderness tabernacle covered in rough, dark badger skins, concealed the glory and gold treasure inside..a type of Jesus living in our flesh.)

How did his glory peek through?

It peeked through whenever He performed a miracle and was not "just a man" and when He hung on the cross in perfect obedience and sinlessness fulfilling every prophecy of the redemption, (the Roman centurion glimpsed it and became convinced He was the Son of God) and when Jesus was raised from the dead and walked about on earth before and as He ascended into Heaven.

What is his glory like now in the presence of his Father?

Jesus returned to the Glory, majesty, praise and honor that He enjoyed before His earthly birth and journey. And now additionally He is glorified as the Bridegroom of the Church Triumphant, His bride, who will reign with Him for 1,000 years on earth!

Why do you think Jesus wants his disciples to see him in this glory (verse 24)?

I love that our God desires to be known....has made His Existence visible in all of His creation...even as the Heavens declare the Glory of God. He has created us with the same desire...to want to know and to be known.(He created us with a "God shaped void which only He can fill as part of His desire to be in relationship with His children) Jesus wanting His disciples to see Him in His glory was both His God-man and His earthly-man desire to be known and recognized for Who He is in His fullness. God is always reaching to His creatures knowing that we are not fully who He created us to be, until we know Him in intimate relationship. The disciples would not truly KNOW their Jesus until they saw His glory and was set apart as their Savior, Lord and God, as well as their friend and mentor in the things of God.

Jesus preeixistent glory

Jesus was with God at the beginning, all things were made through him (John1:1-3).  He is the image of the invisible God, the first born over all creation. He is before all things, all things hold together in him. He is the head of the body. He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead. In everything he has supremacy (Colossians 1:3).

He is the radiance of God's glory the exact representation of his being (Hebrews 1:3). From the notes.

Jesus glory during his earthly ministry

People witnessed the miracles, in person, then through the scriptures. His disciples witnessed the way he lived his daily life, the transfiguration (Matt 17) and his baptism (Matt 3:13-17). They beheld his glory (John 1:14).

Jesus glory in the presence of his Father

Jesus Christ died and is raised and is at the right hand of God, who intercedes for us. He is our great High Priest (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 8:1)

He was one  who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore we can draw near with confidence to Gods throne, the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Q3. (John 17:4-5)

What was Jesus' pre-existent glory like?

What was His glory like during His earthly ministry?

How did His glory peek through?

What is His glory like now in the presence of His Father?

Why do you think Jesus wants His disciples to see Him in this glory (verse 24)?

Before Jesus came into the world, He dwelt in heaven with the Father. Having done everything the Father required of Him, He would be exalted to this place – in heaven, at the glorious right hand of His Father. We read of this in Philippians 2:9-11, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” During His earthly ministry His deepest concern was with the glory of His Father. We read earlier in v. 12:28, “Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." Instead of praying that He might be saved from the cross, the Lord Jesus rather prayed that the name of His Father might be glorified. This shows us that He was more concerned with bringing honour to God than worrying about His own safety. The Name of God was glorified during the earthly ministry of Jesus, and His obedience unto death also resulted in His own glorification. The very action which glorifies Father and Son also brings life to us lost sinners! Our Lord Jesus desires to have His people with Himself in glory. For us as believers, to die is to go to be with Jesus Christ and to behold His glory.

What was Jesus preexistent glory like?  This is a difficult question to describe so suffice it to say  we can only know what is described for us about the glory of God and words don't do it.  Exodus 15:11 gives a description that I like about our God (Father Son and Holy Spirit)  so he is majestic in holiness, awesome (fearful) in praises, working wonders.  He shall be wondrous to behold.

What was His glory like during His earthly ministry?  I think it is glorious that He came as a Babe.  People expected something different.  His glory shone through in so many ways, His baptism, transformation, resurrection, His miracles, His compassion, His knowledge, His wisdom, His contentment, His desire to be with the Father in prayer, He walked on water, His love for us, His desire to glorify the Father in life and death, His sinless life.

What is His glory like now in the presence of the Father.  He is now back in perfect holiness and communion with the Father and Holy Spirit.  He was 100 percent God while on earth and now He is back at the right hand of God, 100 percent God Himself with all the attributes of the Godhead present.  He was and is Holy.  He was and is our Redeemer, Savior, Lord and intercedes for us as the Great High Priest at the right hand of God.  He is surrounded by glory. A glory we can glimpse in a sunset or His creation but it is like a faint shadow of His glory.

Why do you think Jesus wants His disciples to see Him in this glory?  That is who He is, fully God and He wants fellowship with us and He wants us (have you thought about that?  us!) to see His glory.  To whom do you share your most precious treasures and intimate details?  To those to whom you are close and love and trust.   He knows it will be wonderful for us.  What an awesome God.  And He chose me.  Me. Like Gideon the least among the people.  No particular importance here but important to God.  Thank you Jesus, thank you, thank you, thank you!

God bless!

Lesson 29 Question 3

Jesus's pre-existent glory was his place with God and the fact that he was God - John 1: 1 - by him and through him the world was created.

His glory during his earthly ministry was being obedient to the Father - by teaching and healing and ultimately by dying for our sins.

Jesus' glory peeked through during his existence here on earth by the power of His message, His miracles, and the Father's pronouncement at his baptism and again on the mountain of Transfiguration.

Jesus now is at home - in heaven where he is worshipped with the Father.

Jesus wants the disciples to see this glory so that they can know how much love there is between the Father and the Son. They can now know his true nature. That is, they can now know that he is God - part of the Godhead.

Jesus pre-existent glory was like that of the Father. Jesus glory was from the Father because the heavenly Father loved him before all creation.

Jesus had emptied himself of all the glory he had with the Father when he began his earthly ministry. Only after his resurrection did the apostles see his glory.

Jesus glory peeked through at times because his work that was given to him by the Father was a definite sign Jesus had come from the Father. Jesus prayed that those the Father had given him would see his glory.

After Jesus death, resurrection and ascension into heaven the Father restored his glory and Jesus now sits on the right side of the throne of God.

Jesus wants his disciples to see his glory because they were given to him by the Father and also to witness the love God had for Jesus even before creation.

Q3. (John 17:4-5) What was Jesus' preexistent glory like?

His glory was that of “Shekhinah” glory, When Moses asked to see the glory of God, he was shown the Shekhinah, the very essence of the creator, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.

Q4. What was his glory like during his earthly ministry? The Messiah’s earthly ministry revealed “Shekhinah” glory, as he completed the work the Father gave him to do.

Q5. What is his glory like now in the presence of his Father? He was restored to the glory He had from the very beginning: The glory he left in order to redeem mankind.   This is beyond all understanding of mankind; we cannot fathom the “LOVE” of our creator.

Q6. Why do you think Jesus wants his disciples to see him in this glory (verse 24)?

Glory was revealed in His words and works, His prayer for believers is that we behold His glory, unveiling the full revelation of His deity.

Jesus’s pre-existent glory was the majesty of a very great God, the most powerful being of all.  In scripture it is described in terms of a king in the midst of his court.  During his earthly ministry this glory was veiled so that only on occasion was it seen.  His glory was glimpsed when he performed miracles, when God spoke saying ‘This is my Son the beloved’, when the disciples saw him transfigured and ultimately when he rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven.  Christ’s glory increased because of his great achievement on earth.  I think Jesus wanted his disciples to see him in this glory to encourage them when they are suffering later on and to affirm their faith in him.

"glorify. . .glory" This verse emphasizes the pre-existence of Christ Jesus had revealed "glory" to the disciples by His signs and miracles. Now the ultimate "glory" would be His death, resurrection, and ascension back to heaven's glory.

Not only is Jesus the exact representation of God, but he is God himself—the very God who spoke in Old Testament times. He is eternal; Jesus worked with the Father in creating the world He is the full revelation of God. You can have no clearer view of God than by looking at Christ. Jesus Christ is the complete expression of God in a human body.

When God created, he made something from nothing. Because we are created beings, we have no basis for pride. Remember that we exist only because God made us, and we have special gifts only because God gave them to us freely. With God we are something valuable and unique; apart from God we are nothing, and if we try to live without him, we will be abandoning the purpose for which we were made.

Jesus’ great desire for his disciples was that they would become one. He wanted them unified as a powerful witness to the reality of God’s love. In our daily walk we need to be helping in unifying the body of Christ, the church. We pray for other Christians, avoid gossip, build others up, work together in humility, exalt Christ, and refuse to get sidetracked arguing over divisive matters.

The Glory of creating everything is beyond what we can imagine. Creating matter, time, elements it the havens that are required for life to exist on this tiny speck in the universe. It was awesome but we can't do it justice with our feeble minds, no matter how "smart" we think we are. He is was and will be "indescribable" in his glory, forever.

A life of blessing so many by healing them, even knowing they were not believers, this is a form of love we can't fathom, this is another part of his glory, the time on earth.

Being all knowing, he understood what he had to do to fulfill the mission, as difficult as it was when the moment arrived, he was holy in how he spoke to his murderers, just as he was to his disciples. This si another form of glory.

Knowing it would all come to pass as the Father wanted, we can se hat the devil played in to Jesus' plan. So the devil is blinded by his own foolish pride and self image. He can be defeated, as Jesus came to Glory and because the Savior of the world.

"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world." (17:24)

He intends for them to have his power and he wants then to feel wonderful about their mission that would start at Pentecost. He repeats later that they are one with him. Then after He will say it about us. What a gift and what responsibility! Good thing to do God's will today, and not think about tomorrow. It is only in the NOW that He can be in us and do the work of the Father to bring more glory. All Glory to you King Jesus!

Jesus’ preexistent glory was equal to the glory of the Father.  The Son of God has always been honored in heaven as the One who created everything that has been created and continues to sustain that creation. He has always been lauded as the One who was, is, and forever will be unmatched in His supremacy before and above all things. He has always been esteemed as the God the Word who existed jointly with God the Father when time was created.

For the duration of His earthly life as a servant of the Father born in the likeness of men, Jesus divested Himself of His glory, rightful authority, and divine privilege as He “made Himself nothing” and humbled Himself to accept the shame of death on the cross. (Philippians 2:5-8).  Jesus never proclaimed anything but the glory of the Father.  Glimpses of His own glory only came through the fullness of grace and truth in His identity as “the only Son from the Father” (John 1:14).

Now returned to the presence of the Father, the glory attributed to Jesus before His incarnation has been fully restored – with the additional ceaseless praise of His faithful accomplishment of the Father’s will and plan of salvation.  He is celebrated as the One who is worthy of all possible praise, glory, honor, and power throughout all eternity.

When He prayed this prayer of chapter 17, Jesus knew what was ahead.  He knew the tidal wave of fear, questions, doubts, and dangers that would soon threaten the faith of His disciples.  He had already promised to send His Spirit and not leave them abandoned.  And now He shared His heart for them/us with the Father as He prayed of His desire for the time when all those given to Him (because of faith in redemption to the Father through His blood sacrifice) will be with Him in heaven and will see His glory in its fullness.  The disciples needed that statement of truth and glimpse of Christ’s position with the Father as a foundation to strengthen them through the difficulties and persecution that would soon descend.  They needed to grasp the reality of who He truly is in order to accept their mission of taking the gospel to the world and laying the foundations of the Church.  The shame and disgrace of the cross was NOT the end of the story!  This assured truth of seeing Christ in all His glory was (and is) an anchor of our faith and the hope of our future.

In his preexistent glory, was perfect glory as Christ “lived in intimate communion of glory and blessedness with the Father.” (Dagg).  During His earthly ministry He came to be like us (human) and His earthly teachings were reinforced by spectacular works (miracles) but the miracles that supplemented his teachings were only used to reinforce His glory, they were not the focus.  His ministry on earth didn’t dissociate him from his own godly qualities, He still retained his godly power, He simply set aside His heavenly glory and authority during His earthly ministry and surrendered Himself completely to the will of the Father.

Robert C. Chapman’s song, Jesus in His Heavenly Glory begins this way:  “Jesus, in His heavenly glory, Sits with God upon the throne; Now no more to be forsaken, His humiliation gone.”  Today, Jesus reigns supreme at the right hand of His Father.  God’s objective when He allowed His son Christ Jesus to be sacrificed on the cross was that all of mankind might be made perfect before Him on our day of judgement.  I believe the last two questions were answered in Jude (24-25) “Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever.  Amen.”

I don’t know what Jesus’ preexistent glory was like but it must have been something out of this world. Even the things that John wrote in Revelations about the kingdom was glorious but the glory couldn’t be express in human terms. His glory during his earthly ministry was to do the work of the Father. His glory peek through with the miracles that he performed. The glory that He now has in the presence of the Father is that everybody in heaven is glorifying him. Jesus wanted his disciples to see him in this glory so that they would continue in the work that the Father gave him.

Q3. (John 17:4-5) What was Jesus’ preexistent glory like? What was his glory like during his earthly ministry? How did his glory peek through? What is his glory like now in the presence of his Father? Why do you think Jesus wants his disciples to see him in this glory (verse 24)? The preexistent glory was the image of the invisible God, and the firstborn over all creation. His glory was veiled so people did not see what He truly was which was God incarnate. It peaked in miracles. Unveiled and brighter than the sun. So they recognize who He is and know that He is God incarnate.

Q3. (John 17:4-5)

1.       What was Jesus' preexistent glory like? Jesus’ preexistent glory was a close relationship and blessedness with the Father.

2.        What was his glory like during his earthly ministry? During his earthly ministry, Jesus’ glory was divine; it was perfect, radiating the Father’s glory and character by voluntarily being         incarnated and sacrificed for us sinners.

3.        How did his glory peek through? It peeked through the eyes of his disciples.

4.        What is his glory like now in the presence of his Father? His glory now in the presence of his Father is like as though restored as One of the co-equal Trinity.

5.        Why do you think Jesus wants his disciples to see him in this glory (verse 24)? I think Jesus wants them to have an indelible memory of His deity even when they will shortly be seeing his mortal body on the cross. It may also be that he wants them to really believe that he was sent by the Father.

Christ was referring to His eternal pre-existence (Colossians 1:15-18; Rev 1:8, 11; John 1:1-2). Christ is the eternal Word of God, His glory was eternal not newly contrived; Christ was begotten by the Father before all ages.  Christ always had this glory during His three estates: before the world was, during His earthly ministry and afterwards in heaven.  Christ the eternal Logos desires that His human nature be brought into participation of the glory which Christ the Logos-the Word (Proverbs 8:22-23)  had before the beginning of the world.  We need to study Daniel's vision to comprehend the glory of Christ before His incarnation (Daniel 7).

His glory was manifested as He healed the sick, forgave sins, raising the dead and by countless other miracles.  His glory "peeked" through at the Transfiguation.  The Shekinah glory was so evident !  What a tremendous demonstration of His glory.

His glory can be described now as we read the seven addresses to the churches listed in the beginning of the book of Revelation.

Christ's desires us to behold the beatific vision.   In His prayer, Christ knows that His disciples would not behold the full vision of God here in this life;  His prayer was for a transfer of His people to heaven. Christ wants us to be in His immediate presence. We don't clearly behold His glory in all fulness at this time.

Q3. (John 17:4-5)

What was Jesus' preexistent glory like?

What was His glory like during His earthly ministry?

How did His glory peek through?

What is His glory like now in the presence of His Father?

Why do you think Jesus wants His disciples to see Him in this glory (verse 24)?

Hebrews 1:3a reads as follows: "The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of our awesome God {reflecting God's Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine} and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father's] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by his powerful word  [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal].

His obedience in carrying out His Father's plan through thick and thin, in His earthly ministry.  In difficult times.  He was an example and showed God's ways throughout. He healed the sick, drove out demons, loved the unlovely and went to those who needed and accepted help. From lepers (outcasts of society) and prostitutes, to tax collectors, rich and poor alike. He ministered to all who God put in His path.  He was the LIGHT.

I think that it was for encouragement and reassurance that He wanted them to see Him in His glory.
