According to Daniel 12:1, God's people will be persecuted like never before in all of history during this unparalleled time of intense and great distress. It will be a time of trouble for the entire world worse than anything that has come before. This period certainly parallels the descriptions of a time of “great tribulation” referenced in the New Testament. Jesus described this event in the same way, “such has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be” (Matthew 24:21). John wrote of those who come “out of the great tribulation” in Revelation 7:14. It will certainly be a time of trouble like never before, but it is allowed only a certain span of time and will then be brought to a certain end.

The "time of great distress" mentioned in Daniel 12:1 can also be referenced in Matthew 24:21-22; Mark 13:19-20 when Jesus spoke of the "great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now" and also in Revelation 7:14 "who have come out of the great tribulation". During this time there will be a great persecution of God's people but this persecution will be limited and will end with Christ's deliverance.

Q2. What will happen during the great distress of God's people? In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

During the time of this great distress which basically are the wars and uprisings between the two major kings of the north and south, the Jew will be sandwiched and persecuted being in between. My understanding of the 1st verse of chapter 12 may be trivial but I comprehend it like this. The time of Israel’s trouble and woes began when Michael, the protector of the Jews, stood up, however, I believe that God chose to bring salvation to His chosen people through suffering at the time, just as He did when He delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, during their misery.

(1a) And at that time will Michael stand up, the great prince which stands for the children of your people: (1b) and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. (Dan 12:1)

The time will come as we all know and as Jesus said, “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand)….”(Matt 24:15a). And how I conclude that the time of great distress and the great tribulation correspond to each other is because I see conformance in two ways. Firstly, the biblical words written by Daniel and that of Matthew :-

a) And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. (Dan 12:1b)

B) For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again. (Matt 24:21)

Secondly, the distress of old in Daniel 12 began when Michael stood up, while yet to happen prophecy will be fulfilled when Jesus comes again – His second coming – both implying stood up or come again - as I mentioned earlier, my thoughts are inconsequential as I’m in the process of learning and trying to make sense by understanding more.

Today, religious deception and false prophets have found their ways into our cultures and churches in many countries – wars and earthquakes are already in place – lawlessness has grown and its only a matter of time when Christians, the worshipers of the Most High, the one true God will be hated, hunted and killed – and as were all aware that Christian persecution by the IS has already found it’s advent. Probably the chaos in these times it’ll be much more intense than in those days spoken of by the angel and Daniel.

Q 2. (Daniel 12:1)

What will happen during the great distress of God's people?

In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

In Revelation 12:7-10 we read that the archangel Michael fights against Satan and his demons. This happens when they are cast out of heaven and are confined to earth. It is this expulsion that produces this terrible time of great distress that Daniel mentions. Jesus states this in Matthew 24: 21: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” Satan comes down to earth knowing that he has but a short time, and his wrath is terrible. This is all part of Satan’s strategy to try and prevent the return and reign of Christ.

It will be a time of great trouble, misery and woe for Daniel's people.  In the New Testament book of Revelation  it is called the great tribulation.

The great Prince Michael will arise.  Everyone who's name is written in the book will be delivered.  Conformity from this time to the "great tribulation" spoken in the New Testament is there will be great suffering for Israel throughout the years ahead.  But, there is a great promise of hope for the true believers.

Q2 (Daniel 12:1) What will happen during the great distress of God's people?

At the time of the end Michael, the great angelic prince who defends and has charge of "Daniel's people", shall arise! Dan 12:1 There shall be a time of trouble and distress such as never was since there was a nation till that time. A time of "intolerable anguish," tribulation, affliction, death, and  Jews hated by all nations for My name's sake. (Michael will keep them from being totally annihilated)

BUT...."your people will be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the Book of God's plan for His own". Dan 12:1....the result will be the vail being removed from the eyes of the Jewish nation, and they will mourn over the fact that their Messiah came to them 2,000 years ago, and they rejected Him. Many will be saved, praise God!

In what ways does this seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

At the time of the end (amp) tells us when it will happen. Jesus also described the forerunners of this tribulation....wars and rumors of wars, nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, famines and earthquakes in place after place...just the beginning of the 'birth pangs of the anguish." Matthew 24 also confirms Daniel's  words in v.21: There will be a great tribulation, affliction, distress and oppression such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now.....no, and never will again."

Jesus also validates the Antichrist "will commit the abomination that astonishes and makes desolate, spoken by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place." Mt. 24:15. This will also create anguish and terror, when they recognize the hour they are living in and that the peace treaty signed with Antichrist was a total lie and betrayal.

Speaking of earth quakes,, I live on the Calaveras Fault in Northern Calif. and we've had over 500 earthquakes during the month of October (2015) His coming feels very soon!!!! Even so, come Lord Jesus!

Q2. (Daniel 12:1) What will happen during the great distress of God’s people? In what ways does this time seem to conform to the “great tribulation” spoken of in the New Testament?

The great distress appears to be talking about persecution of those who follow Jesus.  "They will persecute me because they hate Me." The tribulation often has a western interpretation in that the Great Tribulation will occur when America starts getting persecuted.  However, there is already great persecution in many places throughout the world.  I think when we consider a great persecution, we need to look beyond our own context and our own nation and look to what is happening in the rest of the world.  The persecution against the Church is intensifying in places all around the world.  How this differs from the Great Tribulation maybe more global in perspective.  It does appear we are moving toward that direction more and more.

What will happen during the great distress of God's people?

"These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." (Revelation 7:14). "It will be for a time, times and half a
time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed." (12:7) The Persecution of God's people will end upon the return of Jesus.

In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

The "time of distress" in 12:1 probably corresponds to the "Great Tribulation" that Jesus spoke of:
"For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now -- and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the
sake of the elect those days will be shortened." (Matthew 24:21-22; Mark 13:19-20)

Q2. (Daniel 12:1) What will happen during the great distress of God's people?

In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken

of in the New Testament?

  1.  "For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the

beginning of the world until now -- and never to be equaled again.

If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but

for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened."

  1.  Jesus is talking about the end times of the future and far future

events. God has control concerning how long persecution will be.God

cutthe days short which made it possible for some to survive. They

were shortened for the elect his chosen people.

Q2. What will happen during the great distress of God's people?

In the last days when Michael, the angel set over Israel, God's people stands up, there will be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation: it is interesting that "Stands up" is a judicial term that indicates rendering a verdict, which often includes carrying out the sentence, we will see God's most powerful Archangel, Michael, will stand up as Israel's advocate and rescue them, and as I read in Revelation, we the Gentile believers in the Messiah will also experience some of the damage that the Anti-Christ will place upon Israel, there will be planet wide consequences, but for those written in the book, they will be rescued.

Q3.  In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

The one that stands out to me is found in Matthew 24, the "Olivet Discourse" when Yeshua, (Jesus) discusses the future and constitutes his fifth and final teaching in the book of Matthew when he predicts events prior to the Messiah coming.  Beginning in V15, When you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso reads this, let him understand:) those be in Judea flee into the mountains; there will be great tribulation, such as not since the beginning of the world to this time, nor ever will be:  When Antiochus IV (Epiphanies’) conquered Jerusalem in 167 B.C.E. he erected an altar to Zeus in the Temple refers to this as a fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy, but Yeshua is pointing to an additional, future fulfillment, when evil decrees will be renewed, and will grow stronger. It will be a time when many will be deceived, there will be a great falling away from the truth sounds much like Daniel 7:25

"He shall speak words against the Most High,
shall wear out the holy ones of the Most High,
and shall attempt to change the sacred seasons and the law;
and they shall be given into his power for a time, two times, and half a time."

Q2. (Daniel 12:1) What will happen during the great distress of God’s people? In what ways does this time seem to conform to the “great tribulation” spoken of in the New Testament?

There will be great persecution of Gods people.

The "time of distress" in 12:1 probably corresponds to the "Great Tribulation" that Jesus spoke of:

"For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now -- and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened." (Matthew 24:21-22; Mark 13:19-20)

There is a reference to the "Great Tribulation" in Revelation as well.

"These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." (Revelation 7:14)

Q2. (Daniel 12:1) What will happen during the great distress of God's people? In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

Great suffering is in store for God’s people throughout the years ahead. This way of describing the future is also used by Jeremiah (Jeremiah 30:7) and Jesus (Matthew 24:21ff). Yet the great suffering is tempered by a great promise of hope for true believers.

It is a future time period when the Lord will accomplish at least two aspects of His plan: 1) He will complete His discipline of the nation Israel (Daniel 9:24), and 2) He will judge the unbelieving, godless inhabitants of the earth (Revelation 6 - 18). The length of the Tribulation is seven years. This is determined by an understanding of the seventy weeks of Daniel (Daniel 9:24-27; also see the article on the Tribulation). The Great Tribulation is the last half of the Tribulation period, three and one-half years in length. It is distinguished from the Tribulation period because the Beast, or Antichrist, will be revealed, and the wrath of God will greatly intensify during this time. Thus, it is important at this point to emphasize that the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation are not synonymous terms. Within eschatology (the study of future things), the Tribulation refers to the full seven-year period while the “Great Tribulation” refers to the second half of the Tribulation.

It is Christ Himself who used the phrase "Great Tribulation" with reference to the last half of the Tribulation. In Matthew 24:21, Jesus says, "For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever shall." In this verse Jesus is referring to the event of Matthew 24:15, which describes the revealing of the abomination of desolation, the man also known as the Antichrist. Also, Jesus in Matthew 24:29-30 states, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days . . . the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory." In this passage, Jesus defines the Great Tribulation (v.21) as beginning with the revealing of the abomination of desolation (v.15) and ending with Christ's second coming (v.30).

During the great distress of God's people everyone whose name is found written in the Book will be delivered from the greatest distress the world would have ever known.  This seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament as Revelation tells that there will be some who come out of great tribulation and they will be dresses in white, there garments washed in the blood f the Lamb.

Q2. (Daniel 12:1) What will happen during the great distress of God's people? In what ways does this time seem to conform to the "great tribulation" spoken of in the New Testament?

The writer of the study suggests that the "...time of great distress" (Daniel 12:1) corresponds with the "great tribulation" that Jesus refers to in the New Testament (Matthew 24:21-22; Mark 13:19-20). We do not know the precise duration of this trouble, however, we do know that there will be a time of great persecution of God's people. This time will "be limited" and end with Christ's deliverance (notes). Matt 24:22 says that this time will be so brutal that if it's duration was not shortened, none of the chosen ones would be saved (this writer's paraphrase).

At the time that the old serpent is defeated by Michael, this evil being will persecute God’s people. But God will deliver His people which will be carried away to the desert on the wings of a great eagle.

This description matches with the description of the great tribulation because the facts described by Daniel and by John (Revelation) are very similar. Both describe Antichrist features, Satan’s defeat before Michael, God’s people deliverance and the 3 years and a half of tribulation.
