Q4. Son of David

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

I suspect that, with the network of spies and informants that every unjust ruling power has, the chief priests and scribes had dug up all the “sordid” details of Jesus' history as His popularity grew among the people and He became a threat to their power and position. So I imagine that they were first incensed by Jesus' family background. Who was this man of illegitimate birth from a scorned place like Nazareth to go around teaching as a rabbi with no credentials, claiming to be the fulfillment of Isaiah's messianic prophecy (Luke 4:16-21) and accepting accolades as the Son of David (Matthew 21:9,15)? And to them it must have seemed that the next generation of impressionable young minds was already being “brainwashed” into believing this impostor, as even the children in the temple were celebrating and praising Jesus with that title. The religious officials were enraged on every level.

This title of “Son of David” was profound and held distinct meaning. It signified the Messiah promised by Yahweh through David's lineage (2Samuel 7:12,16). It recognized the coming king who would re-establish the throne of David for eternity and reign over God's everlasting kingdom. The Jewish leaders refused to accept Jesus as this One.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9,15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David?"

To hear the children and young people cry out "Son of David" must have meant they were hearing this from their parents, which also meant His significance and popularity was rising and being talked about in the homes. They feared this was going to rob them of their prestige and power over the people. "Hosanna in the highest", was praise to God for Jesus being in their midst. This, coupled with the Chief priests and scribes awareness of "and having seen the wonderful things that He did" spoken of in that verse, made them furious.

What does the title "Son of David" signify?

It signified that Jesus was the promised Messiah...descended from the lineage of King David....and the "Signs" and miracles He performed were God's stamp of His authority as Messiah.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15)

Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David"?

What does the title "Son of David" signify?

These little children, seeing the wonderful things Jesus was doing, recognized the true expression of God's grace and broke out shouting "Hosanna to the Son of David."

This fact that the children saw the worth of Jesus’ action must have infuriated the chief priests and scribes to no end.

In the very first verse of the NT, Jesus Christ is referred to as the “Son of David.”

Most probably because as the Son of David, He brings together the OT and the NT.

The point is made that Jesus in His human lineage, was a descendant of David.

This fulfilled God’s promise to David that one of David’s descendants would reign forever over His people.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David"? What does the title "Son of David" signify?

Pride was the reason.  Otherwise they would not have been angry.  They might have wondered, investigated scripture, prayed to God (who they really had no relation too).  They had only their power and position and it was threatened by the miracles and the humble nature of Jesus.

Son of David signifies the Messiah, the long awaited One, the Son of God, promised One from the line of David.

God Bless!

The little children boldly sang his praises.  They were able to trust and praise God without any doubts.  They set an example before the chief priests.  They were envious, shame and could not bear to see Jesus honored.  "Son of David" signify the Messiah.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David"? What does the title "Son of David" signify?

There were some who called Him "Son of David" like the Canaanite woman (Matthew 15), a mother whose daughter was oppressed by a demon. She cried out to Him, "Have mercy on me, O LORD, Son of David!" And He did.

And in Matthew 20:30-34 we can read of the two blind men who, when they heard Jesus passing by, called out to Him, "Have mercy on us, O LORD, Son of David!"

They asked only that He open their eyes. The Scripture tells us that He had compassion and when He touched their eyes, they immediately received their sight.

And they followed Him.

In Matthew 21 we read of His ride into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. As He entered the city, "the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD' Hosanna in the highest!" (Psalm 118:26)

The chief priests and scribes watched as He healed those who came to Him, and hearing the children in the temple calling to Him, "Hosanna to the Son of David" they were "indignant" (from the Greek 'aganakteo' - sorely displeased)

Looking at how 'aganakteo' is translated in the 7 other verses where it is used, tells us that it wasn't just a mild bit of displeasure, it was anger. The hierarchy of the synagogue was angered because they were not receiving the same accolades as this "prophet from Nazareth of Galilee." (vs 11 & 15)

And all the while their indignation grew, the children were calling to the Messiah, "Hosanna" (prosper, they were calling to Him to prosper, to be 'propitious')

In 2 Samuel 7:8-16 is a beautiful prophecy that is quite specific to David through His prophet Nathan.

The LORD begins by saying, "I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name" and finally, the LORD said to David, "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My Name and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.""

This prophecy is important because Jesus is the fulfillment of that prophecy.

"Son of David" is Christ's Messianic title.

And even though there is no blood connection through Joseph, Jesus' earthly father, as His legal father, He was by adoption, a descendant of David.

The genealogies of both Matthew 1 and Luke 3 show the connection of Jesus to David and especially by blood through Mary.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as “Son of David”? What does the title “Son of David” signify?

The chief priest and scribes were angry when Jesus entered triumphantly into Jerusalem and the children and people called him the Son of David, because they were offended and insulted. Jesus was healing people and doing miracles, thus the people crowed to Jesus instead of the priest and scribes.

The title "Son of David" means that Jesus was a descendant of the Davidic line or to say an offspring of David. He was the one that was prophesied about in Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Hosea.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David"?

The title "Son of David" had a whole lot of meaning for the religious and this could have made them angry that it was uttered by little ones who do not know or understand the meaning. Also, they hated Jesus due to His admonishment of them and now He was given this title by children. In their eyes: "What an outrage"

What does the title "Son of David" signify?

It signifies that Jesus was from the line of David, and that as God promised that a person from Davids' lineage would one day come and free the Israelites. Thus by implication - the Saviour.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as “Son of David”? What does the title “Son of David” signify?

The title “Son of David” is more than a statement of physical genealogy. It is a Messianic title. When people referred to Jesus as the Son of David, they meant that He was the long-awaited Deliverer, the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies by Prophet Isaiah.

Jesus was the seed of David, He is the promised Messiah, which means He had to be of the lineage of David. In book of Matthew it gives the genealogical proof that Jesus, in His humanity, was a direct descendant of Abraham and David through Joseph, Jesus’ legal father.

The chief priests were so angry about the children referring to Jesus as Son of David because they were under the rule of the Roman government and what they were expecting for a Messiah was not someone who healed the sick and the lame and gave sight to the blind and raised the dead but someone who would usurp the Roman government and take over David’s throne. It signify that He comes in the name of the Most High but also is part of the lineage of David as well.

Q4. (Matthew 21:9, 15) Why were the chief priests and scribes so angry when little children referred to Jesus as "Son of David"? What does the title "Son of David" signify?

The chief priests and scribes did not believe that He was the Son of David. They thought he was just a prophet not the Messiah or related in any way to David. They did not want anyone to acknowledge him as coming from David or his descendant. They believed the Messiah would come from Bethlehem.

The title signifies that Jesus is a descendant of King David and that he is the Messiah or Lord David talked about. That He is the one everyone has been waiting to rescue them.
