We know that along the history of Israel, the keeping God’s commandments and His laws faithfully is the primary condition for selecting a leader.  God only blesses and supports the faithful men and help them to be wise and successful.

Caleb is a wise father, so he has used his daughter as a prize for a successful man, which certainly should be a faithful man of God.  His daughter future will be in the hands of a blessed man and he also have a good son in law to share the load of his work.

We can see in Joshua 15:15-17 and Judges 3:9-11, another saint of God of Israel added to the line of Joshua and Caleb.

Jdg 3:10  And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

As per the above verse, we know that the Holy Spirit has come upon Othneil and filled him with wisdom and strength to conquer Chushanrishathaim.

Othniel also was a man of faith. Caleb decides not to conquer Debir but instead offers a challenge that he will give his daughter in marriage to a man who lead his men in battle to take over the city, that way He will have a faith bold son-in-law. The power behind Othniel's judgeship is the Lord.

Othniel was a man of faith.  He, also, desired Acsah.  Caleb wanted a man who would do good by his daughter and enhance the family fortunes.  Someone bold, faith-filled. Therefore, he offered his daughter in marriage to the man who leads in the attack and capture of a fortified city as an incentive.  The power behind Othniel's judgeship was because the spirit of the Lord took control of him.

lesson 7 Joshua 15:15-17; Judges 3:9-11 Caleb.

Q3: What can we deduce from Othniel's character from Joshua 15:15-17 and Judges 3:9-11?

Othniel was a warrior, a leader, a  follower after God, he was brave and courageous. (Willing to risk his life to win Achsah for his wife)

Why does Caleb offer his daughter in marriage?

He wanted to give her to a man of character whom he believed would take care of her.

How does this narrow the selection of a son in law?

It narrowed it down to one! Apparently Othniel was the only one who was brave enough to take the challenge, and I think Caleb hand picked Othniel for her and therefore made the challenge. It also kept the land he was given in the family. Othniel was Caleb's nephew, and now also his son in law.

What is the power behind Othniel's Judgeship according to Judges 3:10?

When the Israelites cried to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them. Othniel, whom the Spirit of the Lord came upon to judge and lead Israel.

Othniel's character is of courageous, obedient to God and to the leaders. When Caleb offered his daughter in marriage for conquering   Kiriath-sepher,  Caleb  was seeing the courage, obedence and a  faithful man who can take care of his daughter and family properly. By this act Caleb was able to narrow down selection of a able his son-in-law easily. When Israel was under  Cushan-rishathaim rule  for eight years, they cried out to the Lord for help then God has sent Othneil to deliver them and he was appointed as the first Judge for the Israeli  nation and to lead them as the spirit of the God was with him.

Q3. (Joshua 15:15-17; Judges 3:9-11)
What can we deduce about Othniel's character from Joshua 15:15-17?
Why does Caleb offer his daughter in marriage?
How does this narrow the selection of a son-in-law?
What is the power behind Othniel's judgeship according to Judges 3:10?

He must have been a brave man, very much like his future father-in-law – and in love with Caleb’s daughter, to accept the challenge.
Caleb wanted to ensure that his future son-in-law would be of the same fighting caliber and faith as himself.
This narrows down the selection, but Caleb can be sure of a son-in-law with the right credentials.
The Holy Spirit empowered Othniel to lead his people to a victory over a tyrant oppressor.
By now he had become Israel’s first judge.
This God-given victory resulted in a 40-year period of peace.
This came about because of the disobedience and idolatry of the Israelites.
They had lived among the pagan peoples, intermarried with them, and even served their gods (Judges 3:5-6).

  1. Othniel was a man of God.    He was blessed by the Lord.  He was a courageous leader and warrior.

  2. Caleb offered his daughter because he knew that who conquered Debir was in God’s favor, was courageous and would therefore take good care of his daughter

  3. The Lord was behind Othniel’s judgeship.   He was successful in conquering Demir, Mesapotamia and brought time of peace in the land.

We can deduce from Joshua that he trusted Othniel's character so much that he gave his daughter to him in marriage for taking the city of Debir.

Caleb offers his daughter to anyone who can capture the fortified city of Debir. He knows his brother's son Othniel can be trusted to do the job.

Joshua said anyone who conquered the city of Debir, he would give them his daughter Acsah to be their wife.

According to judges 3:10 Othniel was a great judge. He defeated the king of Mesopotamia Cushan-Rishathain and the land had rest for 40 years.

Othniel became Israel’s first judge after Joshua’s death. He played an important role in reforming Israel by chasing away an oppressive enemy army and bringing peace back to the land.

Othniel was Israel’s first judge. In we read that he volunteered to lead an attack against a fortified city. Here he was to lead the nation back to God. Othniel had a rich spiritual heritage—his uncle was Caleb, a man with unwavering faith in God. Othniel’s leadership brought the people back to God and freed them from oppression. But after Othniel’s death, it didn’t take the Israelites long to fall back into their neighbors’ comfortable but sinful ways.

Caleb led by example, but then leadership also delegates to others responsibilities the leader is trying to teach others. Caleb threw out the challenge to take Debir to see if any wold step our and trust the Lord for His provision and deliverance.  He offered his daughter to any who would take the challenge possibly because such a man of faith would be a worthy husband for his daughter. Othniel took the challenge and won. Later the people recognized Othniel's leadership and trust in the Lord and chose him as a judge to lead Israel.

Q3. (Joshua 15:15-17; Judges 3:9-11) What can we deduce about Othniel's character from Joshua 15:15-17? Why does Caleb offer his daughter in marriage? How does this narrow the selection of a son-in-law? What is the power behind Othniel's judgeship according to Judges 3:10?

1. He was determined to attactk and capture Kiriath Sepher so that he could have Aacsah as his wife.

2. He offered his daughter in marriage for her to have a husband. He also was not willing to lead the attack and perhaps that was the reason why.

Also in Caleb's day -- and to the present day in much of the East -- fathers decide whom their daughters will marry, and try to find for their daughters men who will do good by them, and enhance the family's fortunes.

3. Caleb knew Othniel was a good christian man.

4. He was a man of God and the power of God is what helped him.The Spirit of the LORD was upon him and he judged Israel. He went out to war.

Othniel became Israel’s first judge after Joshua’s death . He played an important role in reforming Israel by chasing away an oppressive enemy army and bringing peace back to the land. Thus Caleb’s legacy of faithfulness continued to the next generation. Acsah asked Caleb for springs of water because her land was in the south and was very rich. Caleb probably granted her request as a wedding present, He was a man of God. God was with Othniel because he was a God fearing and folllower.

From what we have read we can deduce that Othniel’s is well respected, very courageous and he is ambitious.

Caleb offer his daughter in marriage because she was at the age for marriage and the opportunity to make the selection of a husband was presented in taking the attack and capture of Kiriath Sepher.

As leader, Caleb know the availability of young men in his tribe.  He also knew who would take him up on the challenge to attack and capture attack and capture Kiriath Sepher.

The power behind Othniel’s judgeship according to Judges 3:10 was his submission and obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Othneil's character is obviously similar to his Uncle's, his faith in God is probably spurned on by the actions of his uncle but it is own faith.

Caleb's offer of his daughter to marriage could be for a number if reasons; to prolong his genealogy, to ensure a strong line of God-fearing descendants, to ensure that his daughter gets a man worthy of her characteristics, strong, faithful or maybe he knew that Othneil would rise to the challenge of Debir  and he wouldn't  to fight this battle.

Othniels judgeship could very well be because of His strength, Courage and faith in God

Caleb had driven out the giants from Hebron (Keriath- Arba), now remained Debir (Keriath-sepher). Instead of leading the men himself to take Debir , he offered it to the one who would be brave enough to take it and offered his daughter in marriage to the person also.

The one to take it was Othniel, his nephew. WE can deduce from this that he was strong and brave and had faith in the God of Israel just as Caleb had.

The land had been allotted to Caleb. If he wanted to keep the land in his descendants possession, he would have to offer his daughter to the person as a wife, else he would loose that part of his land.

The person to gain the land would be someone that would be prepared to take his daughter as his wife. He would have to be of like faith as Caleb and would have to be prepared to live in the land allotted to Caleb's family.  For this to be someone out of the family would thus be highly unlikely. Thus it narrowed it down to someone he knew.

The Spirit of the Lord was upon Othniel and he judged Israel and they had 40 yrs of peace during his time of judgeship.
