Nehemiah prays and night and day because he wants to get the Lord God's attention, he wants to be heard and he really desires that God speaks to him and hears him before he goes in to see the emperor. It is something which is very important to Nehemiah. Nehemiah fasts because when one is fasting one is firstly in denying himself for God, secondly when one is fasting not one will often have visions. No!!! this is not overreacting. It is a matter of wanting something very much, something which is very important to you and something that you are willing too fast for. In this day and age most of us do not take our religion seriously enough so that when we want something we never fast for it. Maybe it was something that we should encourage and try ourselves. Nehemiah had great concern for his people. He gives praise and honor to the Almighty God. He pours his heart out for his people. He was praying and waiting for an answer from God. Why does he fast and weep? Isn’t that excessive? Nehemiah fasted and weeped because he was upset to find out the Jerusalem's walls had not been built and for the people of Jerusalem. His expression of grief was not excessive at all! It showed the seriousness of his sorrow of Israel's sin and his desire that Jerusalem become the city it was had been. Nehemiah prayed day and night because he was petitioning God, that He would be going in front of King Artaxerxes to discuss the fact that the walls of Jerusalem were in ruins, even years after the completion of the restoration of the temple. Artaxerxes was a very powerful man and Nehemiah had to make sure he followed “protocol” to the ‘t’ because he would be going against a decree put forth by the same king he was to meet with. He fasted and wept because it was his own countrymen who were in a defenseless position in Jerusalem and he really wanted that decree which would declare that the city be finished and the walls rebuilt. I wouldn’t call it excessive because, even though it is impossible to badger God into doing something He does not intend to do, I feel that, it is when we are at our weakest that God talks to us and sets our course so we are not praying for something needlessly. I think back on times when I was desperate and called on God continually and it seemed like every time there was something, some sin that I was more than guilty of and tried to pray my way around it and finally I became so exhausted that God was able to communicate to me the answer. Nehemiah had just received word in Babylon from his kin from Judah that the Jews who survived exile were in great trouble and reproach in Jerusalem. The walls were broken down and the fortified gates had been destroyed. That was his homeland, given to the Jews by God's decree. He and the other captives longed for release to go back and dwell in their land which he just learned was in devastation. Why does he fast and weep? Isn’t that excessive? He wept and fasted in grief over their broken covenant with God, Who keeps covenant, so the fault and the disgrace fell on him and his people. He repented for the Israelites, Gods servants, who sinned against Him acting corruptly and had been scattered according to what the Lord told Moses would happen. Nehemiah remembered Gods' promise that He would re-gather them to the place where He had chosen to set His Name. (Deut. 30:1-5) His love for God and for home were genuine...I don't believe his grief and outpouring were excessive. It is much like many believers today who have been weeping and crying out in deep intercession for America to be given a second chance to return as a nation to God and the principles to which our founding fathers adhered. Thousands on "prayer walls & calls" have been repenting for the 60 + million babies ripped from mother's wombs and burned in incinerators (like those sacrificed in the fires to Molech in that day) and for kicking God out of our schools which have been overtaken by Socialism/ Godless Communism. The media has lost its moral standard, and now supports the take over of Godless Communism/Socialism in America. The Left is working to tear down and remove our God inspired Constitution. Movies have fallen into focusing on perversion, crime, murder and death in the name of entertainment, and now in children's movies. The left has admitted there has been a planned coup to impeach Pres. Trump while he was still running for office, on the chance that he would win! He did! Thank God, he is pro life, has stopped government spending for abortion internationally and no longer provides support to planned parenthood. He has done more to support Christianity than any other president in American history. There are 24/7 national prayer lines for America as well as in each state focusing on the situations in each one. We are seeing the beginning of turnaround as the evil is being revealed in shocking degrees and the Church which has been asleep is awakening to the need to arise and be the light once again in this dark world rather than an irrelevant social gathering on Sunday. bertha Posted October 16, 2017 Report Share Posted October 16, 2017 Nehemiah prays day and night, the same prayer, because he knows that God is merciful and if he persists, God might just have mercy on His people and forgive them and hear his prayer. The predicament that Israel found itself in was a dangerous one. They were exposed to their enemies. The walls were a fortress around their cities to protect them from attacks or invasions from other armies(enemies). Nehemiah fasted, prayed, mourned, because he felt a burden for God's people and the situation they were in. God's name was being dishonored as Israel was suppose to be God's people, therefore maybe Israel's enemies made snide remarks about their God. Nehemiah knew that only God could interfere. Only God could move the heart of the King in their favor. Fasting is a sign of humbleness, surrender, total dependence in God and is never too excessive to be exercised. Nehemiah was distraught over the plight of the Jews so he went into fervent prayer. 2. Christ stated that some situations require fasting. Nehemiah wept because he was in pain from seeing the Jews suffer so badly. The wall of Jerusalem was broken down and the gates were burning. 3. No, we are to pray without ceasing. Nehemiah prays day and night because he sees his fellow man in Jerusalem are suffering in their situation with a ruined City hidden very little hope for the future. His brother, and others, had informed him of what was happening in Jerusalem, and this news was most disturbing. The Samaritans had stopped the walls being repaired thereby leaving the city vulnerable to any attack – the Jews were like sitting ducks. This was the result of the deception used by the enemies of Israel in having persuaded Artaxerxes to withdraw his support and to issue a command for the work on the wall to be stopped. By fasting and praying, Nehemiah was expressing his concern for the situation in Jerusalem. He humbly asked God for help and advice. By the end of his prayer time he knew what had to be done. Again demonstrating that when we pray, problems and difficult decisions fall into proper perspective and we are able to solve them by applying the correct actions provided by our Heavenly Father. No amount of prayer is ever excessive. We need to be patient and wait on the Lord. As His children, we should only be grateful that we can approach the throne of Grace with confidence knowing that He hears us. What a blessing – thank you Lord! Isn't that excessive? A. He fasted and wept because of the state insecurity of Jerusalem as a result the walls that are in aruined state. He attributed the state of the ruins as a fall out of the sin of the people that led to God abandoning them to the enemy to destroy the city. This type of prayer an d wailing is not excessive. Katy Posted October 24, 2020 Report Share Posted October 24, 2020 Nehemiah was very upset to hear from his brother that the walls of Jerusalem were in ruins and the gates of the city had been burned down. He realised that the only way he could get help from the king was to go to God first and seek His help. By praying and fasting for so long Nehemiah was showing God that he knew that he was totally dependent on Him to get help from the king. Nehemiah's weeping and fasting is not excessive , if we are really seeking God about something important to us we should do the same. Unfortunately I don’t fast as I am too weak! We see other examples of this in the bible, in the book of Esther, she asked her people and her maids to fast for three days before she went to the king to ask him to save her people by recalling an edict he was tricked into making by the wicked Haman.
