Here's a weird definition for you: Boldness is courage directed outward toward a threatening person or situation. You mentioned how the disciples spoke in front of the entire Sanhedrin -- this took courage, but it also took wisdom (the right words to say). The Holy Spirit interceded, when asked, and gave the disciples the boldness they needed. When they asked for more ... more boldness (more courage, wisdom and Spiritual interceding), it was given to them.

It never seems to hurt to ask for boldness, does it?

Circumstances or situations in which boldness is needed don't seem to be ordinary or everyday. It seems that the disciples needed boldness to defend the gospel in front of hostile Jews -- not an everyday situation. They also needed boldness to speak the gospel message in situations that were unusual, unfamiliar or threatening, to have just the right words as well as the courage to speak. Lastly, they had to be articulate -- good speakers. People had to understand their gospel message as delivered.

The request for boldness suggests that they knew that the task God had given to them was beyond their natural abilities. It suggests humility. Obedience. A willingness to take a risk for Christ. Praying for boldness makes the disciples seem like ordinary people, but chosen and obedient to the assignment given to them by God.

I enjoyed reading this, Pastor Ralph. I'm going to pray for boldness in my own life as well as a clear mandate from God which spells out the situations in which I need such boldness.

Q1. (Acts 4:23-31) Why do the believers pray for boldness? Why do they need boldness in this circumstance? What does this tell us about their faith? Their character?

They prayed for boldness because they needed to have courage to continue preaching the Word of God even if they were strongly opposed.

The circumstances they were facing as they were spreading the Gospel were dangerous because those in authority were against it. Thus, they needed to be bold and without fear to be able to go on spreading the Good news.

Praying for boldness indicated their strong faith in God. They believed in the power of God and they also trusted that He will protect them against those who were persecuting them. They had a strong character and could not be easily discouraged by negative talks.

The disciples needed boldness because the Sanhedrin was trying to shut them up.  They knew that when they are in need, they are to ask, in Jesus name, for God to provide and it will be provided.  This demonstrates their faith in God's provision and Jesus' salvation.  Their character has been developed by their faith.

Boldness is the fearlessness confidence of doing something that one couldn't do normally.

Believers pray for boldness because the situation sorrounds them was difficult to face, they were most wanted people that authorities looked for in order to persecute and to stop them from what they were doing; preaching about the risen savior and Messiah named Jesus.

They need boldness in this circumstance because they needed to continue to do what they were doing. This was just the beginning of their journey to do what the Lord Jesus commanded them. The opposition was so huge, that's why they needed boldness to move forward.

Faith is the assurance of the things hoped for, conviction of things unseen. This tell us that believers had 100% sure of what they believed.  They had a distinguished character, never compromise in whatever difficult situation they faced. This is what we need to grasp especially in our generation, today's church seems to be Easily to compromise and go against what our faith direct us.

Q1. The disciples had witnessed what had happened to Jesus for preaching and teaching the gospel. Why would their fate be any different as they were doing the exact same thing. However they now had the Holy Spirit following Pentecost, but they needed to be filled afresh . So they prayed for boldness to speak out unafraid in the name of their Lord and Saviour. They were well aware that they were public enemy no 1! But after praying we are told that they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.?Acts 4v31. We can tell from these verses that their faith was strong and they trusted God. They were determined to be faithful to God no matter what happened to them.

Q1. (Acts 4:23-31) Why do the believers pray for boldness? Why do they need boldness in this circumstance?

The believers in this study prayed for boldness so as to continue the assignment the Lord had given them to testify about him, preach the Good news and bring souls to salvation but they were being prevented the authorities. We too in this generation need to pray for boldness given the intense persecution of the Christians.

What does this tell us about their faith? Their character?

Their prayer for boldness to God is an indication that they have faith that with the power of God with them, they can continue to preach boldly and gain victory over the evil one and the leaders that were trying to stop them.

As regards their character, they were resilient and determined

Q1. (Acts 4:23-31) Why do the believers pray for boldness? Why do they need boldness in this circumstance? What does this tell us about their faith? Their character?
The believers pray for boldness to proclaim Christ’s gospel as a way to counteract the Sanhedrin’s threat. They are confident that God will not allow His plan and purpose to be frustrated by the rulers of the people. They prayed for boldness, with power and confidence, for they knew that they were praying to the Lord of all creation, the God of all power. They also asked God to continue confirming their ministry to the people, with miracles, signs, and wonders done in the name of Jesus. In that day, miracles and wonders were signs that confirmed the preaching of the Good News. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, indicating their obedience to the Lord, their walking in the light, and their obedience to Him. We notice that they did not pray to have the situation they found themselves to be changed, but rather to give them the boldness and power to achieve what He has already predetermined (Acts 4:28). Praying for power that is equal to the task. They knew they had a conflict situation and that their battle was not only against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, and against the rulers of the darkness. Showing complete faith in the Sovereign Lord, the God who is in control of all things. What they also did was to pray in unity, that is having the same mind when they prayed. There was no strife, argument, disagreement, and/or division among them; which would only hinder prayer and result in loss of spiritual power. Also, there was no disorder, which is evidence of the Holy Spirit leading, for God is a God of order.

If they were going to get the word out about their savior then they had to be bold. Otherwise they would not have been able to spread the word. They had everybody against them especially the authorities. This tells us that they had faith and their character was a bold one.

Q1. (Acts 4:23-31)

Why do the believers pray for boldness?

Why do they need boldness in this circumstance?

What does this tell us about their faith? Their character?

The believers knew that the task was not an easy one and they relied on the Lord to help them.  They never asked to be taken out of the situation but asked for boldness in the situation that had arisen.  Their faith was strong in the Lord.  They were fully aware that without Him they could do nothing.  They stood together in the situation they were in.  They were humble and not proud. They did not take things into their own hands but rather prayed and asked God to take over , they asked God for boldness because in themselves they were not bold.
