Pastor Ralph mentioned that it was a universal habit in the Mideast to consult with seers or prophets before battle. I suppose these military men were superstitious, but they may also have wanted the military advantage of knowing what was going to happen so they could come up with a "work-around." As was stated in the last lesson, Yahweh does respond to prayer that's heartfelt, so if defeat was prophesized, a king could pray for Yahweh to alter the course of history, even temporarily.

We know that the other gods were impotent and the result of imaginative minds, but the people at that time may have thought, or worried, that if one god opposed a second god, they would need to align themselves with the winning, more powerful god. Ahab wasn't sure about the power of Yahweh. Jehoshaphat, in contrast, was firm in his alliance/faith in Yahweh as Ahab, however, waffled.

Jehoshaphat seems like a spiritually discerning guy, one capable of seeing through acting. He wanted Yahweh's prediction, which he believed to be true (and which was true).

Q22(1King22:2-9)Why does Jehoshaphat want to consult an actual prophet or Yahweh before going into battle? What does this tell us about his discernment of Ahabs prophets?Of his desireto be obedient?

It was a habit to the kings to consult to ancestors before going to battle in order to found whether they are going to win or not and to know about the strategies of enemy.

He never trusted the military because he thought that they are being used by the king.

He wanted to be obedient to God.

Q22. Jehoshaphat I’d a true follower of God, and he wants to consult with God before attempting going into battle. He knows that he needs God’s guidance and help in such matters. Jehoshaphat is dubious about Ahab’s prophets , he is pretty sure that they are only saying what Ahab wants to hear. I am sure Jehoshaphat must know of Ahab’s Ndola worship and the influence his wife has on him. The very fact that Ahab marries a pagan shows disobedience and total disregard for the commands of Yahweh. Jehoshaphat though is a true believer and want’s , knows he needs to consult with Yahweh as to whether this battle and war is what they should be doing or not.

Q22. (1 Kings 22:2-9)
Why does Jehoshaphat want to consult an actual prophet of Yahweh before going into battle? What does this tell us about his discernment of Ahab's prophets? Of his desire to be obedient to God?
As was their custom, Jehoshaphat wanted divine counsel from the LORD before both he and Ahab embarked on retaking the city of Ramoth from the Arameans. He knew the 400 so-called prophets were Ahab’s “yes men” who only spoke what they knew he wanted to hear, and could not and did not speak God’s Word. Being a godly king, faithful to the LORD, he therefore asked Ahab if he could rather consult with a true prophet, to which Ahab replied that there was one, but he never prophesied anything good for Ahab. Ahab and Jehoshaphat were allied politically but Ahab was not at all interested in hearing from the true God. He was under the influence of his evil wife and Baal worship. Eventually he did call for Micaiah who was one of the very few faithful prophets in Israel. But there was no interest in being obedient to the LORD; his heart had been hardened by his apostacy.

Jehoshaphat who is a true believer in Yahweh and has removed idol worship from Judah knows that Ahab has many false prophets that serve Baal. These false prophets tell the king Ahab lies about hearing from God. Jehoshaphat wants to hear from a real prophet of Yahweh before going into battle.

Jehoshaphat knows Ahab's prophets serve Baal, but he wishes to be obedient to Yahweh.

Q22. (1 Kings 22:2-9)

Why does Jehoshaphat want to consult an actual prophet of Yahweh before going into battle?  Jehoshaphat is a godly king and his desire is to do God's will.  So he wants to first consult an actual prophet of Yahweh (not the ancestors as reflected by one of the answers), to confirm what God has in mind  for them.

What does this tell us about his discernment of Ahab's prophets?   Jehoshaphat did not trust the prophecies of Ahab's prophets.

What does this tell us of his desire to be obedient to God?    He was genuine in his desire of being obedient to God. It was not just a show.

Jehoshaphat wants to consult a true prophet of Yahweh the true God because he did not trust Ahab who worships idols and have 'yes prophets' who tell him only what he wants to hear and never the truth.

King Jehosophat  as a godly man wanted to be genuinely directed by God.  The false prophets of King Ahab were either of the idol Astarte or Baal or priests of the high places of Bethel or Dan.   King Jehosophat knew what was in their hearts though they claimed a veneer of spirituality.

Ahab's prophets were enjoying the patronage of King Ahab, and they knew what would gratify him.   They were indeed religious showmen unlike Prophet Micaiah who had nothing to gain, but every thing to lose in maintaining his steadfast trust in Yahweh.  This Prophet Micaiah was in prison for three previous years.   He could have flattered Ahab to obtain release, but by taking a godly course he could only expect to go back to jail.  The false testimony of King Ahab's prophetswas not agreeable to the WORD OF GOD.

Why does Jehoshaphat want to consult an actual prophet of Yahweh before going into battle?

Jehoshaphat heart was devoted to the ways of the Lord.

What does this tell us about his discernment of Ahab’s prophets? Of his desire to be obedient to God?

Jehoshaphat does not trust the 400 men that was brought by Ahab.  He viewed them as "yes" men.  Jehoshaphat wants a second opinion from a certified prophet of Yahweh.

Jehoshaphat want to consult an actual prophet of Yahweh because he wants to God's mind before going into the battle.

It tells us about the his discernment of Ahab prophets as he suspect that the 400 prophets are speaking what the king Ahab want to hear.

Jehoshaphat is a strong advocate for Yahweh. Jehoshaphat suspects that the 400 prophets who were speaking one voice were just saying what the Ahab wants them to say. He suspected that they aren’t real followers of Yahweh. Moreover Jezebel had been searching and killing true prophets of Yahweh. Ahab was a nominal and not a devoted follower of God and he calls for Prophet Micaiah not because he wanted so but rather because Jehoshaphat insisted so.
