Eldoret is the fourth or fifth largest city in Kenya, with a population of about 200,000. It is also the fastest growing city in the country, with many people moving from villages to
Eldoret for the jobs available in this city.
It is located close to the borders with Uganda and Tanzania.
Eldoret is located only half a degree north of the
equator at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. Here the
world famous Kenyan runners train because of the high altitude.
In the Western Highlands, it is far removed from the hustle
and bustle of Nairobi.
Eldoret
is a regional center for the area considered the bread basket of
Kenya, with large-scale corn and wheat farming as well as cattle
raising and a dairy industry. They fly cut flowers directly to
the markets in Amesterdam and is home to a textile industry.
The town is also home to:
- Moi University, with nearly 15,000 students
- Moi University School of Medicine and an excellent teaching
hospital
- Eldoret Polytechnic
- Eldoret International Airport
- Dorino Lessos Creameries Cheese Factory, which produces 30
types of cheese
- Kenyan runner Kipchoge Keino
