  • 4 months later...

How does David describe himself in verse 1. "the man anointed by the God of Jacob,

Israel's singer of songs." (23:1)

In what sense was David a prophet? God spoke to him and through him.

What is the main message of verses 3-7? God is looking at the righteous and the unrighteous.

How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day? FEAR THE LORD, NOT THE ELECTORATE!

"the son of Jesse,

the oracle of the man exalted by the Most High,

the man anointed by God of Jacob,

Israel's singer of songs".

God spoken to David through visions, dreams, and voice:

His prophecies regarding the coming Messiah found in the Psalms 22:1

"The Spirit of the Lord spoken through me, his words was on my tongue".

Appreciation: For what a god has made.

Observation: We receive national revelation is through studying what God has made.

All creation including the heavens reveals Gods glory and majesty. The vast expanse we see is testimony to the craftsmanship of God.

From the vantage point of earth, there is no heavenly body so wonderful as the sun.

In this passage, the sun is only a stunning symbol of the Creator.

God's Plan For a Nation's Leadership

To protect His people, God warns against ungodly leaders. The rule of the wicked is a direct violation of His will. "The wicked shall not rule the godly, lest the godly be forced to do wrong." (Psalm 125.3).

Instead , God's plan is for us to have leaders who know Him and will rule according to His word. "He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God " (2 Samuel 23:3)

David describes himself as the Son of Jesse, raised up on high, annointed of the God of Jacob, The sweet psalmist of Israel.

David was a prophet because he heard the Lord's voice and had prophetic dreams, the Lord spoke through him and he shared what he learned with his people.

The main mesage I got from verses 3-7 is, he who rules over men must be just and rule with the fear of God.

Certainly Government officials and elected leaders would do a much better job if they feared God and were just. There would be more honesty, love and concern for the people, they would be seeking direction from God. Power would not be the main concern, but being in harmony with the Lord God.

Q2. (2 Samuel 23:1-7) How does David describe himself in verse 1.

"David, son of Jesse, the man who was raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist. The Spirit of God spoke IN and BY me, His word was upon my tongue."

In what sense was David a prophet?

He spoke what the Lord put in his mouth to speak, not realizing at times he was speaking in great detail about the coming Messiah, the permanent King of Israel...and King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

What is the main message of verses 3-7?

The one who governs in the love and knowledge of God and in His righteousness, will lead the nation to prosper and thrive.

How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

Oh, if only we had righteous leaders who seek the face of God! Just one example is the front page of our newspaper this morning which declares that the recently defeated Senator, Pete Stark, the longest reigning Senator, and avowed Atheist will speak at the Atheist convention". What impact for good and godliness we could have been bathed in, had he been a lover of our Lord Jesus, instead of the corruption, self interest, self pandering, perversion and craziness which has been his "legacy".

Q2. (2 Samuel 23:1-7) How does David describe himself in verse 1. In what sense was David a prophet? What is the main message of verses 3-7? How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

David describes himself as, "David the son of Jesse, the man made great by the most high who speaks. He is appointed King of the God of Jacob; he is the sweet singer of Israel."

David is a prophet in that he is appointed by God to be His oracle. To speak divine utterances or messages.

The main message of verses 3-7 is, " Whoever rules fairly over people, who rules with respect for God, is like the morning light at dawn, like a morning without clouds after a rain that makes the grass sprout from the ground." He then gives credit to God for caring for his family in this way. He declares that God has made a lasting agreement with him in a sure and right way in every way. He praises God saying " He will accomplish my salvation and satisfy all my desires." He also assures that "evil people will be thrown away like thorns. They will be thrown into the fire and burned where they lie."

This Psalm helps all leaders as well as government authorities by setting a standard for good leadership. They are to treat ALL people fairly and they are to be held to a high standard in the expression of care for the people put under them, or they will be removed and considered evil. If they do what is right, they will be blessed and their light will shine brightly.

David describes himself as a prophet (speaking oracles), son of Jesse, annointed, singer of songs.

He was a prophet in that he followed God so closely, God could speak to him and could lead David to lead his people relying on God's Word.

The main message is the difference righteous government makes to a people.

If government officials would choose to be led by God, fight evil and worship Him, our country would be changed instead of going downhill as it is right now.

Q2. (2 Samuel 23:1-7) How does David describe himself in verse 1?

David does not describe himself out of "PRIDE", but as "REVEALED" by the Holy Spirit, that he, David, came from the kingly tribe of Judah, is the son of Jesse, was anointed by the God of Jacob, and it was God who raised David up on high.

In what sense was David a prophet?

David was speaking by the Spirit, giving forth a "PROPHETIC SPEECH" and not that of the flesh.

What is the main message of verses 3-7?

These verses speak of what God expects from its rulers, that they be just as they rule in the "FEAR OF GOD", and not rule as to impoverish the nation.

Even though David's house was not as God desired, this prophetic speech coming from the heart of David, was that of "FAITH", faith that God would carry out what He promised, that of an everlasting covenant, for salvation is dependent on this covenant of grace with God.

There may not be growth now for Israel, however the prophetic speech in Jer. 23:5-6 tells us the day will come when there will be, God will raise unto David a righteous Branch, a King will reign and prosper, He will execute judgment and will bring justice, and in His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely, and the name whereby He will be called, "THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS".

How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

This Psalm is a guide for God's people to follow when they go to vote in government officials, for we will be held accountable.

At this time I am reminded of the platform of president Obama -- he took God and Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel out of his platform, if it wasn't for the voice of those saying "NO" that Obama, by the vote of the people, had to put “God and Jerusalem" back into his platform.

I have to wonder, how many voted according to the Spirit of God as He tells us in these verses.

David described himself as:

-One who was delivered from his enemies by the Lord.

-Exalted by GOD the Most High.

-The man anointed by the GOD of Jacob.

David was a prophet in the sense of:

-Oracle-God spoke to him.

-He was inspired by God.

The main message of verses 3-7:

-GOD'S protection when we cry out to him.

This psalm can guide government officials and elected leaders in our day if they would:

-Seek GOD way in running the government.

-Take a strong stand for what is right.

-Not allow a few peoples to change the law-of- the land to justify their own behaviors.

Q2. (2 Samuel 23:1-7)

How does David describe himself in verse 1?

In what sense was David a prophet?

What is the main message of verses 3-7?

How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

David describes himself as an Oracle (Prophet); son of Jesse (a true Israelite – qualified to be a king); exalted (raised up by God Himself to be a king); anointed (by the God of Jacob); and singer of songs (Psalmist of Israel). David was a prophet in the sense that he often spoke God’s words under the influence of the Holy Spirit. The main message of these verses are the privileges and responsibilities of leadership. With leadership comes awesome responsibility, a responsibility that demands character and integrity and at the same time a submissive attitude towards God. Without righteousness and the fear of God, a leader becomes a dictator and abuses God's people, driving them like cattle instead of leading them like sheep. The leader must have the welfare of people at heart.

How does David describe himself in verse 1?

"David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel"

In what sense was David a prophet?

David's reign was not perfect, his life was not perfect yet he is a prophet in the sense that he spoke the Word of God and that he wrote the Word of God as God inspired him. He is not a prophet in the sense of a seer. What is the main message of verses 3-7?

Although things happened, sin / flesh / carnality at times prevailed in within David's lineage God is Lord. The man that ruleth over men must be just ruling in the fear / reverence of God because God is wise and provides prudent counsel; God is the source if wisdom, inspiration, vitality life; God is yet faithful, God is yet sovereign, God is yet compassionate, God a loyal deliverer.

How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

If adhered to the government official would govern as they were created to. Humanity was created in the image of God, therefore the rule would not reflect carnal precepts and hidden agenda, but the rule would reflect divine concepts and principles.

David describes himself as a righteous king, one chosen by God to uphold justice. David is a prophet because he was chosen , anointed, by God through the prophet Samuel. Chosen to lead and instruct Gods chosen ones and teach and uphold righteousness. He is led by God's Holy Spirit. He seeks God's will at all times. Aside from his transgressions with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah, he does just what God has willed him to do. Though he is human, sinned, and was punished , God kept his covenant with David, through Gods awesome mercy, and grace. David loved God, and God loved David. David trusted the covenant would stand firm from generation to generation. David was a great man of faith,a prophet, a great psalmist who led Gods people.

David has a trite and humble heart towards God. He is thankful for all God has done for him and his kingdom. He trust God. Leaders today could learn a lot from David's resilience, his obedience, his humility, his trust and deep love and faith for God. The main theme and purpose for David's life is to fulfill God's will, though David's obedience and unwavering faith , a Savior is born. Son of David, Son of God , Jesus Christ. God's covenant fulfilled!

Godly leaders of today and in biblical times as well , e.g. Balaam, sometimes lose focus, lose their perspective . This affects their ability to be effective Godly leaders, and certainly can be very detrimental for the people who put their trust in them.

David describes himself in verse one as one appointed by God to do the works that He wants him to. David is a prophet because at certain times he can get the word from God that God wants him to do.

The main message in verses 3-7 is that it is God that can rule the universe justly. And if man would follow what God wants him to do he will be a righteous man. If our government officials and elected leaders in our day would follow this advice I think that we would have a complete different world.

Q2. (2 Samuel 23:1-7)

How does David describe himself in verse 1.

In what sense was David a prophet?

What is the main message of verses 3-7?

How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

a) David describes himself as: the inspired utterance of David, son of Jesse,

the uttrance of the man exaulted by the most High. The man appointed by the

God of Jacob, the hero of Israel's songs.

B) When David consulted with the Lord, the Lord would instruct David either

through dreams or directly to /with David. David would then share what he had

learned from the Lord with his people. The Holy Spirit who came upon him at

his anointing changed the course of David's life.

c) The leader who rules righteously and fears God, will be like the light of the

morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning. Like the brightness after the rain

that brings forth the grass. This Psalms shows David's wonder at God's grace

to him and his descendents. David also contrasts the righteous with evil men

and unrighteous rulers, who like thorns are to be cast aside and burned.

d) This Psalm sets a standard for good leadership. Government oficials and

elected officials should treat all people fairly. If they worshiped and feared God,

they would know what everday people went through struggling to live. The

officials would also have a strong moral code to the people they represent.

They would be humbled by the spirit of the Lord and not be in office "for

themselves". The world would be a better place if the leaders just feared

and worshiped the Lord and followed his will.

Q2. (2 Samuel 23:1-7) How does David describe himself in verse 1? In what sense was David a prophet? What is the main message of verses 3-7? How can this psalm guide government officials and elected leaders in our day?

He declares how he was anointed to a high place, and also a poet of God's glory. Some of his Psalms are interpreted to what happened to Christ. We pray for our president and the other elected leaders to be wise and not break apart the government services in unwise ways that will hurt all of us.

23 Now these are the last words of David.

Thus
says David the son of Jesse;

Thus
says the man raised up on high,

The anointed of the God of Jacob,

And the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2
“The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me,

And His word
was
on my tongue.

3
The God of Israel said,

The Rock of Israel spoke to me:

‘He who rules over men
must be
just,

Ruling in the fear of God.

4
And
he shall be
like the light of the morning
when
the sun rises,

A morning without clouds,

Like
the tender grass
springing
out of the earth,

By clear shining after rain.’

5
“Although my house
is
not so with God,

Yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant,

Ordered in all
things
and secure.

For
this is
all my salvation and all
my
desire;

Will He not make
it
increase?

6
But
the sons
of rebellion
shall
all
be
as thorns thrust away,

Because they cannot be taken with hands.

7
But the man
who
touches them

Must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear,

And they shall be utterly burned with fire in
their
place.

David deccribes himself as Jesse's son, God's anointed speaker and a musician.  His psalms had warnings of what was to come, what to be aware of.   David reminds his reader that rulers of nations must fear God, rule righteously and to stay away from evil men.
