Wow. Good replies, all. I think I most agree that 1)to compromise would have put Moses out of God's will; 2) God did not give alternatives; 3)and there are no hard-and-fast rules for compromise. In my opinion, if you are not sure, err on the side of staying true and do not compromise.

Why is it so difficult for some church leaders to confront people?
Because it is painful. No one seeks pain, and confrontation brings pain. Someone called to leadership, whether it be in the home or in the church, loves those put in his care. And because of this love, he does not want to see someone in pain. But he also realizes that correction now, although painful at the start, reaps a bountiful harvest of peace and righteousness (Hebrews 12:11)
What fears in this regard does a leader face?
We all want to be loved. It is one of those basic needs that everyone has, and is needful for our very survival. When a leader must correct or discipline, he chances losing the "love" of the one he corrects. Also, the very need to correct is not only painful to the sinner, but to the one offering forgiveness for repentance, also. Jesus bought our righteousness and peace for us; and he did it at great cost. We don't even begin to know the meaning of pain compared to his.
How can confrontation and rebuke be a good thing?
There are multitudinous reasons to want to be rebuked for our wrong doing. Some of them are:

Hello people, my name is Nicole, I'm a mature woman, but a lamb in Jesus (a lamb that often goes astray and needs rescuing which gives me a real love for Jesus). I'm doing two other Bible studies in my church which is a Mennonite church in Vancouver, BC Canada. Not sure how much time I'll be able to give to this 'Moses the Reluctant Leader' Bible Study but it sounds interesting and I'm hoping to be fully involved in it. Our pastor has used several Bible studies from JesusWalk for our small group and he shared the website with me after asking me to lead a couple of them.
I will be greatly interested in hearing the views and thoughts of the others in this group. God Bless!

This is something I've always wondered about. When I think of honoring someone, it's usually for something I admire. A judge for being just, a clerk for helping me at a store, a singer for exquisite use of her voice, and so on. Then I realized that I was honoring them for who they are, much more so than for what they do.
The same, I believe, is true in these verses. God is being God. He created man to worship Him. When man does not do what he is created to do, God must intervene.
As leaders, we do not always know who will listen and who will not. If we are true to our word, walking the walk and not just talking the talk, we may receive the honor due us. However, if God cannot guarantee that His followers will honor Him, how can an earthly leader do so? I don't think that leaders should demand honor. If they are honoring God, He will also honor them.
I wonder if any Egyptians came to be God because of what occurred in Egypt. It is a pretty compelling reason to believe! (John 10) 37 Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.
