Q2. Caring for Mother

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus’ mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus’ values?

Mary must have felt immensely sad (Luke 23:48) and distraught. Simeon said to Mary in his prophecy about her son's life,  ..."and a sword will pierce through your own soul also" (Luke 2:35).

Jesus honoured his (legal) responsibility as the first born son, by ensuring that Mary would be cared for and supported by one of his closest disciples (probably John). This demonstrated that Jesus loved and cared for his mother. As well as doing his Father's will, he was concerned that he fulfilled his responsibilities while in the world.

(John 19:26-27) What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus' values?

Mary, Jesus' earthly mother was weeping and heart-broken - "she is consoled by friends". John was the disciple that Jesus loved. According to Jewish custom, Jesus being the eldest son has to ensure that His mother is cared and provided for. Jesus showed filial piety to his earthly mother.

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus’ mother Mary feeling at the cross?

I can only imagine the heart break and the fear and confusion....the questions, the unspeakable agony. She was probably sick and weak...feeling impotent to help or to ease her Son's pain. I would imagine like most mother's she would have gladly taken His place to spare her loved one from suffering. It hurts my heart just to try to think what Mary was feeling. For her at that point, He was her beloved child, whose diapers she'd changed and whom she had nursed and trained and bandaged his skinned knees...now she could only watch the horror too great to comprehend. She'd been favored to carry God in her womb and to kiss His face, but doubt that she really comprehended any of it during those hours, even though Simeon had prophesied at Jesus' dedication that "A sword will pierce your own soul".

Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother?

As her first born son, in their culture it was His responsibility to place her in another's care in His absence.

What does this say about Jesus’ values?

Jesus was and is selfless....in the midst of His agony, He calmly gave Mary to John as his own mother to be cared for in his home and with his means.  He was still doing the work of His Father, no matter how great His own suffering. What love He showed her and what love and trust He had for John, to give him such an "offering".

This was His final act before the sponge with sour wine was held to His lips and He cried "It Is Finished!" To think that He still had the presence of mind and the strength to think of His mother's care, amazes me. But then everything about Jesus leaves me in awe!

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus' values?

Jesus' mother Mary felt extreme emotion, grief, heartbroken, in severe emotional pain, unconsolable, confusion, disbelief and I believe possibly a sense of peace because her Son had prepared them for this although they did not know exactly what ' this' was at the time and the brutality of it all.

Perhaps because he was there and he was a cousin who believed.  Certainly Mary had other sons, where were they?  That is not for me to know but Jesus gave Mary's care to John and that is enough.

Jesus values.  Jesus created human values, the system which they would be looked after.  He believed in having values.  So He honored those values until the end, He loved His own and is looking forward to the day when we join Him where He is.

God bless

Jen

Q2. (John 19:26-27)

What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross?

Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for His mother?

What does this say about Jesus' values?

She showed her concern and affection towards Jesus by standing with Him to the last. It must have been a terrible sight to see her son in such agony and sorrow, and to witness Him being jeered and insulted by the crowds. She herself was probably exposed to the danger of being abused by the crowds. In spite of His own suffering, Jesus now reaches out in His hour of death and cares for His mother, giving this responsibility to His disciple John.

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus’ mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus’ values?

As the prophecy Simon gave to Mary at Jesus dedication that "a sword will pierce your soul also" surely indicates the sorrow she would feel later in the life of Jesus. This indeed is very traumatic especially for a mother to see her son put upon a cross and die an excruciating pain full death for proclaiming the truth of God.

Jesus gives John the disciple the responsibility of caring for his mother, because it was a Jewish custom for the eldest child to care for the welfare of his widowed mother. The widow had no means of supporting for her lively hood except through the eldest child who was to care for them until death.

Jesus values in life even upon the cross was to think of the welfare and care of his mother and others. All though his life and ministry Jesus always obeyed the laws and customs of the Jewish people.

Scripture does not tell us, but it must have been devastating for her to see her beloved son treated in this way.  What mother would be able to bear the sight of her son’s execution by torture?  Mary must have felt every possible anguish as it happened to him.  Jesus demonstrates his care for his mother by giving John, the disciple who speaks most powerfully of love, his mother to care for.  Love and concern for others is Jesus’ primary value, even while in excruciating physical pain.

Lesson 31 Question 2

Even though Mary, the mother of Jesus, knows he came to save, she has to be profoundly saddened for his extreme suffering.

Jesus as the eldest son fulfills his duty to arrange for his mother's affairs.

Jesus, even in this moment of extremity takes the time to arrange for his mother's care. This shows his faithfulness.

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus' values?

Jesus died on the cross, in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, so that we could be saved from our sins and be given eternal life.

Even while dying on the cross, Jesus was concerned about his family. He instructed John to care for Mary, Jesus’ mother. Our families are precious gifts from God, and we should value and care for them under all circumstances. Neither Christian work nor key responsibilities in any job or position excuse us from caring for our families. What can you do today to show your love to your family?

Caring for others is an important thing in our lives, show love, care, humility and compassion.

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus' values?

She was probably so depressed and in shock that she was numb, dead inside. How could she know he would be risen in three days, seeing him in all that pain.

John was perhaps Jesus' cousin and with Joseph dead, some on needed to take care of mother Mary. Jesus was always doing the right thing, he never missed a chance to help and serve others while he was here in human form. What an amazing savior! Praise his name forever!

Mary was certainly in the grips of profound sorrow. She had probably thought of Simeon's prophetic words many, many times as she watched her beloved little boy grow into manhood, and now that horrific day of fulfillment had come when her own heart would be pierced with unspeakable grief. The glory of God would come at great cost, and it would cost her someone very dear. She knew Yahweh's plan was perfect, but to see her son hated, mocked, humiliated, tortured, maimed, and murdered must have been utterly heartbreaking beyond words.

After Joseph's passing, Jesus was responsible for His mother's welfare, as head of household. I'm sure He loved and honored His mother to a higher degree than any other mother has ever known. He was concerned for her future and care, especially as He was dying. His brothers didn't yet understand Him or believe who He is, and perhaps He questioned their ability or desire to rightly provide for their widowed mother. And so He chose someone He loved and trusted, someone after His own heart, to appoint as her guardian and provider. His beloved friend and disciple, John, was the perfect choice.

What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross?  The Gospels make no mention of her mourning and/or wailing so I believe that through those long hours of witnessing Jesus’ suffering it was though a sword had been driven through heart.  I’m sure that more than once she reflected on Simeon's prophesy that she too would be pierced.  I don’t believe she displayed any sign of weakness keeping her own pain and agony silently inside her.  She knew from the very beginning how it would all end and I believe her devotion and reverence for God and for her son kept her from interfering in His last earthly moments. She was His mother and she’d personally witnessed the results of the brutal scourging and the humiliation that had been levied upon him.  As He was nailed to the cross, she saw His mutilated hands and feet and she personally witnessed he uncontrollable writhing on the cross as the pain gripped his broken body yet, through it all, she had the strength to have stood watch over him until the very end.

Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother?  After Joseph’s death, Jesus, as Mary’s eldest son, would have been responsible for her care and welfare.  Mark 6:3 lists James, Joseph, Judas and Simon as Jesus’ brothers and he could have entrusted her care to any of them but John was the “disciple that He loved.”  John was not only His disciple, he was His friend, His confidante and His brother in God’s Kingdom so he placed his mother in the care of the one who’d stood beside him till the end, the one that He trusted most of all.  Jesus proved that He was a man of compassion when he told the robber that “today you will be with me in paradise“(Luke 23:43).  Again in Luke 23:34 he demonstrated that compassion by extending mercy to those who were murdering Him, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”  When He entrusts Mary to John’s care he again demonstrates that same level of love compassion to his own mother.  As a man of compassion Jesus extended mercy and love to others right to the very end of his life.  I think that says it all with regard to His values.

I suppose that Jesus’ mother Mary if feeling very sad at the cross. Her son is being crucified and is dying. Jesus, being the first born, was responsible for his mother’s wellbeing and John was his favorite disciple therefore he asked him to take care of his mother. Jesus is always putting other people’s problems before himself.

Q2. (John 19:26-27) What is Jesus’ mother Mary feeling at the cross? Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? What does this say about Jesus’ values?

She is probably sad and grieving at this moment because of the fact her first born is dying on cross. Because John is His beloved disciple and He trusts John enough with her to take care of her. That He wants the best for everyone involved.

Q2. (John 19:26-27)

1.    What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross? Mary is brokenhearted. She must be feeling physical pain, sorrow, love and suffering from a mother who is watching her son die, balanced by a sensing of His spiritual glorification.

2.     Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for his mother? Besides it being Jewish custom that as Mary's firstborn, Jesus is legally responsible for her welfare to ensure that she has a place to live and food to eat during her widowhood, John has a special place in Jesus’ heart and his presence at the foot of the cross proves bravery, commitment to the faith, and obedience.

3.     What does this say about Jesus' values? Even at this moment of physical weakness and humiliation, Jesus continues to honor His responsibility to supply all our needs.

Mary must have been dismayed.  The sword of agony pierced her heart as Simeon prophesied.  Mary and the disciples had many questions in their minds.   It is beyond telling what was going in Mary's mind;   she experienced sorrow at the Temple  visit when Christ was a child.

WHat a story indeed !  Christ was true to His Father in heaven, and to His mother on earth.

John had some property in Jerusalem, so Christ knew that John was able and willing to take care of His mother. John was the only disciple that stood at the Cross.

Truly the love of Christ for His earthly mother is beyond description.  He didn't neglect the future welfare of His comfort less, widow and afflicted parent; though Christ was in deep agony and bearing all the sins and diseases of mankind; Christ entrusted Mary to Apostle John.

Q2. (John 19:26-27)

What is Jesus' mother Mary feeling at the cross?

Why does Jesus give John responsibility to care for His mother?

What does this say about Jesus' values?

One can, as a mother, only cringe, at the pain and helplessness, the anguish, that Mary felt. A Mother, generally wants to remove pain and suffering from her child. Mary must have remembered what Simeon had said at the temple  ...  a sword will pierce your heart   ...  she must have been heartbroken to see Him suffer so.  Jesus, as the first-born , was responsible for caring for His widowed Mother, according to Jewish custom.  John, who happened to also be His cousin, was very close to Jesus.  No mention is made of another known male relative or disciple at the crucifixion scene.  Jesus trusted John, so He gave the responsibility of His precious Mother over to John.  Jesus did not disregard His responsibilities, but was careful to see to every detail right to the very end.  His value system was recommendable right to the very end. He did not shirk His earthly responsibilities.  Always an example!!!!
