Q2. The Son of Man

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe "one like a son of man"? God's son, the Divine, Jesus

What makes us think he is a divine figure?  What makes us KNOW?  He is and has been in the presence of God

What authority and glory does he receive? ALL AUTHORITY HAS BEEN GIVEN HIM.

Why do you think Jesus called himself "the Son of Man"?  For the same reasons politicians monitor their words; persecution can only operate with a handle.  Giving himself a name that is used by many makes him appear ordinary; the enemy does not have a handle in which to attack.

(Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”? What makes us think he is a divine figure? What authority and glory does he receive? Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”?

In the Old Testament that the term "son of man" is a Hebraic way of saying "human being." However, Jesus uses it in a different sense. He commonly referred to himself with the title of "the Son of Man," and only rarely as the "Son of God." There are two possible reasons:

1. Accurate. Son of Man, drawn directly from the imagery of Daniel 7:1314 is an accurate description of who he really was and is.
2. Ambiguous. "Son of Man" is ambiguous enough that his enemies aren't able to seize on the title as blasphemy. Son of Man wasn't laden with religious or political baggage. If, on the other hand, he had openly called himself Messiah or Son of God, his ministry would have been cut short by his enemies.

Though "son of man" may seem ambiguous, it is actually a title full of divinity and glory and power. In 7:13, Daniel sees one who looks human ("like a son of man") but is actually the divine heir of the Kingdom of God.

The Son of Man must be a divine figure otherwise He cannot be led before God. God's holy fire would consume any earthly being in His heavenly Kingdom. The Son of Man appears before the Most High God in all his glory and power. The awesome Yahweh, Most High God, the holder of all authority, glory, and sovereign power gives these very prerogatives of divinity to this "one like a son of man." The Son of Man who has been given all authority to accomplish his Father's mission, now speaks to us with this authority and sends us to complete the work.

Jesus saw himself as Son of Man in the following manner:

  • The Son of Man came from heaven.
  • The Son of Man is judge of all.
  • The Son of Man is to be glorified.
  • The Son of Man is to be lifted up.
  • The Son of Man comes to save as an atoning sacrifice for sin.
  • The Son of Man returns in glory.

These verses describe "one like a son of man" as one who looks human and came with the clouds but is actually the divine heir of the Kingdom of God.  He was given the ruling power and glory over all the nations of the world.  All people of every language must worship him.  His power is eternal and his government shall never fail.

Jesus called himself "the Son of Man" because:

1.  He came from Heaven

2.  He judge of all

3.  He is to be glorified

4.  He is to be lifted up

5.  Came to save an atoning sacrifice for sin

6.  Returns in glory

How do these verses describe "one like a son of man"?

Accurate. Son of Man, drawn directly from the imagery of Daniel 7:13-14 is an accurate description of who he really was and is.

Ambiguous. "Son of Man" is ambiguous enough that his enemies aren't able to seize on the title as blasphemy. Son of Man wasn't

What makes us think he is a divine figure?

He is the divine heir of the Kingdom of God, He will reurn riding on the clouds of Heaven.

What authority and glory does he receive?

"He was given authority, glory and sovereign power by the Most High God."

Why do you think Jesus called himself "the Son of Man"?

The Son of Man came from heaven from which He is given the complete heir of. He is the only begotten Son of God who gives Him

the authority to judge all, is to be glorified, to be lifted up, comes to save as an atoning sacrifice for sin, and returns in

glory.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe "one like a son of man?

One like the son of man: was seen in the vision as "coming with the clouds of Heaven."

He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into His presence.

He was given authority, glory and sovereign power.

He was worshiped by all peoples and nations and men of every language.

His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away.

His His kingdom will never be destroyed.

What makes us think he is a divine figure?

The Son of Man came with the clouds of Heaven....he looked human, but was a spiritual being and was given authority, glory and sovereign power and is worthy of worship, honor and glory.

What authority and glory does he receive?

Sovereign authority and glory and power!

Why do you think Jesus called Himself "the Son of Man"?

Jesus is fully God and fully man. He came to earth as man to reveal His Father to His creation, and for us to be able to identify with Him and as the perfect sinless Sacrifice to save us from hell. Jesus was declaring: I AM your creator God and "I AM the  Son of Man" and the fulfillment of Daniels prophecy!

He was given authority, glory and sovereign power by the Most High God, that was only given to Jesus who was the Son of Man.

Seated on a cloud with a crown of gold.

All worshipped Him.

People would relate to Him as Son of Man rather than his divine name.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe "one like a son of man"?  What makes us think he is a divine figure? What authority and glory does he  receive? Why do you think Jesus called himself "the Son of Man"?

These and other scriptures describe "one like a son of man?"

13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the  clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near  before him.

14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people,  nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion,  which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

2.By taking the title "Son of Man," Jesus is saying, "I am the Son of Man  spoken of in Daniel's prophecy!" And he confirms this in his trial before the  Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:64). Matthew 26:64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast  said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

3. He was described as being devine, soverign, Ancient of days, having an  everlasting dominion, and having glory.Just before his ascension, Jesus told his  disciples: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

4. These are some scriptures and there are others that let us know Jesus called  himself the son of man.The Son of Man came from heaven. "No one has ever gone  into heaven except the one who came from heaven -- the Son of Man." (John 3:12-13)

"When [Judas] was gone, Jesus said, 'Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is  glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and  will glorify him at once.'" (John 13:31-32)

"When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am [the one I  claim to be] and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has  taught me." (John 8:28)

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”? What makes us think he is a divine figure? What authority and glory does he receive? Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”?

Daniel describes Him as, "coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed."(Daniel 7:13-14)

These descriptions are comparable to how God is describes with the same attributes as God, "coming on clouds," worshipped, given authority, glory, sovereign power, and he has everlasting dominion and His kingdom will never be destroyed. These attributes are exclusive to Jesus and the Father (Ancient of Days).

These descriptions are fully in line with how the Scripture describes Jesus and how Jesus describes Himself. The main points of this includes the following:

1. The Son of Man came from heaven.

2. The Son of Man is judge of all.

3. The Son of Man is to be glorified.

4. The Son of Man is to be lifted up -- both in glory and as the object of faith on the cross, which is his ultimate glory.

5. The Son of Man comes to save as an atoning sacrifice for sin (Isaiah 53).

6. The Son of Man returns in glory.

I believe Jesus called Himself the Son of Man because He identified with us in His humanity, in prophecy, and with His Father, born in the flesh. He is God become flesh.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”?

As the majestic, all powerful ruler -- sent by 'The Ancient of Days'  ie. YHWH

What makes us think he is a divine figure?

Coming in the clouds of Heaven shows him as divine.

v. 14: all nations worship him ! His dominion shall never pass away ... these are attributes of Almighty God.

What authority and glory does he receive?

vs 14: All glory - power and dominion ... a kingdom that is eternal.  Hallelujah.

Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”?

This is an apocalyptic title many Jews would recognize ... it was a title used in the Qu'ram scrolls so was not unknown at the time.

but also in line with Christ's desire to come humbly. Those who searched the scriptures would understand ... others would recognize it as a sign of humility.  A pattern we need to heed and follow....

I appreciate the comments of my fellow followers.  There are many inspiring comments here.  Thanks and Christian greetings to all.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe "one like a son of man"?

It simply illustrates that the Kingdom, the Power, and the Authority to rule over all belong to this very transcendent Son of Man when He returns in Glory.

What makes us think he is a divine figure?

Jesus, during His time, in identifying Himself with the heavenly figure in Daniel’s vision, said that He is the King who will reign forever, as prophesied by Daniel 7:13~14, below :-

“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.

He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Who else but the Messiah, the preexistent heavenly figure, the DIVINE, can approach the Ancient of Days, the Eternal God.

What authority and glory does he receive?

The “Son of Man” will be given authority, power and glory to sit in judgment and reign over all peoples, nations and languages in an everlasting Kingdom.

Why do you think Jesus called himself "the Son of Man"?

He called himself the “Son of Man” to emphasize His Heavenly origin.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”?

Son of man is used to describe the one who is being seen or what is being seen "looks like a human being".

Jesus also referred to himself as the "son of man" which he was and by declaring himself as "the son of man".  By this declaration He wasn't placing himself in a situation of blasphemy.

What makes us think he is a divine figure?

Jesus Christ fulfilled biblical prophesy and scripture.  He did what He said He would do, He arose from the grave and ascended unto heaven as seen by hundreds.

What authority and glory does he receive?

He deserves to receive all praise, glory and honor.  As Creator He has ALL authority.

Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”?

Had Jesus called himself "the Son of God" then his enemies would have cut short His ministry even shorter.

Daniel described the “one like a son of man” as coming with/on the clouds of heaven to be presented before Most High God, the Ancient of Days. In the visions, the Father commends the” son of man” by giving Him dominion over an everlasting kingdom that will never pass away and can never be destroyed. This indicates that he speaks of a divine spiritual kingdom unlike the transient kingdoms of earth. In His authority over this kingdom, the “son of man” is glorified and exalted. He is served and worshiped by all people, nations, and languages on earth.

The “son of man” is revealed to be Jesus through several clues that were much more obvious to the Hebrew reader than to us at first glance today.

[1] In Scripture, only God Himself comes with or in the clouds (ex. Psalm 68:4, 104:3; Isaiah 19:1).

[2] Only One who is holy would be presented before the throne of the Ancient of Days, and no mortal human being qualifies. God will not entertain sinful humanity in His presence (Psalm 5:5; Habakkuk 1:13).

[3] The Son of Man was given authority and dominion over a kingdom where He would be glorified by all the world. Isaiah 45:22-23 foretold this honor would be for God and no other. And for us, Philippians 2:10 identifies Jesus Christ the Lord as the recipient of this recognition by all people, nations, and languages.

[4] The Son of Man will have an unending dominion over an eternal kingdom. Many years before these visions as he interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's troubling dream, Daniel had revealed to the king that “the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people...it shall stand forever” (2:44). For us, fulfillment of this is described in the future history of Revelation 11:15 where heaven praises Christ's take-over of all earthly kingdoms with His own reign over His everlasting kingdom.

Jesus intensely studied the Hebrew Scriptures as a child just like every other boy. As He grew past the age of childhood instruction, I believe God Himself taught Jesus rather than an earthly rabbi (Isaiah 50:4-5) and the Spirit used the Scriptures to awaken, quicken, and enlighten His full and mature understanding of His divine identity and purpose on earth. At the age of 12, He surprised and distressed his parents by staying behind at the temple in Jerusalem to listen to the teachers while His family unknowingly left without Him to return home after Passover celebrations (Luke 2:46-47). He asked questions and astonished the teachers with His intelligence, understanding and apparently brilliant answers to their own inquiries of His knowledge. Jesus studied, learned, and likely questioned the prophecy of Daniel 7:13-14, where “son of man” was understood to be a Messianic title. In recognizing Himself in those scriptures, He assigned the title “Son of Man” to Himself when He entered His own rabbinic ministry. Every Jewish person who knew the Scriptures (that would be all of them!) understood His claim to be that Messiah.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14)

How do these verses describe "one like a son of man"?

What makes us think he is a divine figure?

What authority and glory does he receive?

Why do you think Jesus called himself "the Son of Man"?

These verses describe the ‘Son of Man’ (Jesus Christ, the Messiah) being brought into the presence of the ‘Ancient of Days’ (God), and all authority, glory, and sovereign power being conferred on Him. This all is in keeping with the promise God made to the Son in Psalm 2:6, and will be fulfilled at Jesus’ Second Coming, as in Matthew 24:30. This all happens in the clouds which is characteristic of Divine events we read in numerous Scriptures. Jesus called Himself the ‘Son of Man’ as it accurately describes who He is as depicted in these verses. It also suited His ministry, while on earth, avoiding conflicts with His enemies, which would occur if He called Himself the Son of God.

One like the son of man is brought to the throne room to be seated with the Father. He is divine because He comes on the clouds of glory. He receives all power and authority . Jesus referred to himself as the son of man to point us to the prophecy in Daniel so we would understand who he is and what is to come.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”? What makes us think he is a divine figure? What authority and glory does he receive? Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”?

In Daniel 7:13-14 describes one like the son of man as a person who is born as a human being.

Things that make us think he is a divine figure because Daniel see's one "like the son of man" coming in the clouds of heaven, he approaches the Ancient of Days, was given authority, glory and sovereign power over all peoples and nations. His dominion would last forever and never be destroyed. Jesus referred to himself as the son of man.

Jesus, as the son of man, receives authority and glory from the Ancient of Days, God.

Jesus called himself the son of man because he was born of a virgin and his enemies are not able seize him on the tithes as blasphemy.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe "one like a son of man"?

Daniel saw in a night vision one like the “Son of man,” come with the "clouds of heaven, and he came to the Ancient of days ( Father God) - describes what Jesus said would one day be fulfilled, (Mat 24:30) then shall appear the sign of the" Son of man" in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the "Son of man" coming on the clouds of heaven with "power" and great glory.

Jesus told the high priest in (Mat 26:64) Hereafter you shall see the "Son of man" sitting on the right hand of "POWER," and coming in the clouds of heaven.

This is the hope of all believers as we know He is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers are made subject unto him, is why praise is on my lips.

Q3. What makes us think he is a divine figure?

The Spirit breathed Word of God makes it known that the "Son of Man" came from heaven, (John 6:62) you shall see the "Son of man" ascend up where he was before?

Jesus made known to mankind the importance of this "truth"  (John 3:13-15) No one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the "Son of man," who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.

Here Jesus affirms his heavenly origin; and throughout the Gospel of John he presents himself as divine as well as human, both in function and in essence of that which exists.

Q4. What authority and glory does he receive?

The Ancient of Days has given to the "Son of Man" dominion, glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages will serve him:  his dominion is everlasting, which will never pass away, nor will it ever be destroyed.

This truth is the hope I hold deep within my heart, (Eph 1:18-12)  The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,  Which he wrought in the Messiah, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.

Q5. Why do you think Jesus called himself "the Son of Man"?

Jesus preferred title for himself as Messiah was “Son of Man, and it also denotes a connection with “MANKIND,” as it corresponds with the “First Adam” who brought sin and a curse onto mankind, while the Son of Man, the “Second Adam” brought life, this truth reveals to me a greater understanding to the title “Son of Man” as I read (Rev 5:3-9) And no one in the heaven, or on the earth, or under the earth, was able to open the book, or to look thereon.  And I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open the book, or to look thereon:  And one of the elders said unto me, Weep not; behold, the Lion that is of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath overcome to open the book and the seven seals thereof.  And I saw in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth.  And he came, and he takes it out of the right hand of him that sat on the throne.  And when he had taken the book, the four living creatures and the four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having each one a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.  And they sing a new song, saying, Worthy art thou to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou was slain, and didst purchase unto God with thy blood men of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”? What makes us think he is a divine figure? What authority and glory does he receive? Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”?

The notes point out that the term "Son of man" in Hebrew is a way of saying "human being". When a son of man is described as "coming with the clouds of heaven" as in the above passage, implies divinity, he approached the "Ancient of Days", and "He was given authority glory and sovereign power" (Daniel 7:14a). All peoples and nations and men of every language (will) worship him because this son of man has been given authority and sovereign power. His dominion is everlasting and will not be destroyed or pass away. (7:14). The notes state that Jesus called himself "the son of man", a term which described who he really was. However in the context of the politics of the time, this term was not overtly descriptive of his divinity, so his enemies could have an excuse to accuse him of blasphemy, so as to end his ministry prematurely.

The one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven and was presented to the Ancient of days (God the Most High); this is the description that tells us the divine nature of the Son of man.

He was given dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.  He is the one who will finally establish the Kingdom of God for eternity, and where men and God will be together.

Jesus called himself the Son of man because he was the one to come as predicted by Daniel's writing.  This is the best title given to Christ, because in Him there is both man and God.

These verses describe Him as coming to God on a cloud. The only other person the Bible describe as riding on a cloud is God Himself. The only person that can come before like God He way He did is the Son of God. Son of Man was given all authority all people, nations, go ferment, etc. Jesus Christ was fully man (He understands exactly what we go through as a human, also He was born of a woman), at the same time He is God only begotten Son.

The one like the SOn of man came in (with)clouds of heaven and came to the Ancient of days .He is divine because he is brought to the Ancient ,He was given dominion and authority and glory

An everlasting dominion which is (eternal as of God alone)

Shall not pass away (existing all of the times )

Cannot be destroyed (Above all and above everything )

and all people to serve Him

\

Jesus calls himself Son of man for the simple reason that this is his life on earth as human (flesh) ,,and that Jesus is in every way a man ,,a created being at that point of period ,

That is the earthy ministry .

The apt and most suitable title is Son of man .

These verses describe “one like a son of man” coming on the clouds of heaven and every eye will behold Him.  The  “one like a son of man” appears glorious and with all power.   He has received "all authority and and power", the same He has given to us.  Jesus called Himself "the Son of Man" because though He is God, He came to earth through a virgin birth, and walked among man.

Q2. (Daniel 7:13-14) How do these verses describe “one like a son of man”? What makes us think he is a divine figure? What authority and glory does he receive? Why do you think Jesus called himself “the Son of Man”

He looked like a human being (son of man in Hebrew understanding). He came with the clouds of heaven.

This shows him as divine because only God rides the clouds in Scripture.

He was given all authority, glory (those of every people, nation and language serve and worship him) and a kingdom that will never pass away. He is the ruler of the universe.

Because he was fully human AND fully God. He was a "son of man" or human being in the ancient Hebrew understanding. He was also divine and that title would make him recognizable to those who knew the Scriptures well. They would see the reference to the "one like a son of man" in Daniel 7: 13-14.
