  1. Gideon is instructed to remove the false idols and replace them with an alter for The Lord. This is significant because it sets God in His rightful place. The fact that the mission took place at night- in my opinion- doesn't matter. He was obedient to what God had called in him to complete. That is what matters.
  2. God saw him as a mighty man of valor- Gideon saw himself as weak and not able. Gods assessment was more accurate. As Gideon's life unfolds he steps into his God-given destiny. The key phrase is "I will be with you"- we must acknowledge that we only overcome because of the grace and favor of God.
  3. Gideon blames God because he thinks, God has abandoned him and his people. This is obviously an error, as the prophet had just previously mentioned the numerous times Gid supernaturally intervened for Israel. We blame God when we fail to see Him at work in our lives or are too self-centered to want to see it. This is obviously a dangerous practice, as we diminish the sovereignty of the one who reigns for eternity.
  4. They were in direct disobedience to God- He told them not to worship any other Gods (Amorite Gods), which they did. This still happens today as we have many "idols" that we put before God- relationships, work, possessions or even ministry.
