There were some that believed in the Resurrection ( Pharisees ) But they believed it would happen on the last days. There had been restorations to life before in the history of Israel. Elijah had restored the son of the widow of Zarepheth (1 Kings 17:17-21). Elisha had raised the son of the Shunnamite woman (2 Kings 4:32-35). Jesus had raised Jairus' daughter (Mark 5:40-42) and the son of the widow of Nain (Luke 7:11-15). Of course, Jesus' friend Lazarus was raised after having been dead four days (John 11). At the hour of Jesus' death, Matthew records that the bodies of "many holy people" were raised to life (Matthew 27:51-53). These resurrections are treated as harbingers of Jesus' coming resurrection. Some of His enemies believed out of fear there would be something that would happen, others believed the body would be stolen and made to believe there had been a resurrection. Christ’s enemies, even after having succeeded in killing him, still feared that something unusual could still happen. There was possibility that he could resurrect or if he did not resurrect on the third day as Jesus had said in his lifetime, his disciples could go steal his body and then claim that Jesus had risen. This could be disastrous and would undo all that they had done- to put to an end the deceit of Jesus that he would resurrect. ( Matthew 27: 62-64 ) “The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priest and the Pharisees went to Pilate.” Sir,' They said. ‘We remember that while He was still alive that deceiver said “after three days I will rise again." So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that He has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse that the first". It was folly to seal and guard the tomb with such a great security against poor disciples and to prevent the fear of Jesus coming out of the tomb by resurrecting. Here was all the power of earth and hell combined to keep Christ a prisoner, but all in vain, when the hour came, Christ was raised!
