A slave is committed to serve their master and a saint is one who is set apart for service to God. When we are saved we become a slave and a saint in God's service for life to do whatever His will is for us.

Paul wanted the Phillipians to learn how to live their lives pleasing to God. The result of them having discernment would be a closer relationship with God and a more loving relationship with their families and friends. Selfishness would make them only live for themselves and to get and never give. We can do alot of "good" things and look good to people around us. We can settle for good when God has greater things planned for us. He will give us the discernment to know what the best is.

Paul expected God to complete His work in them. Paul knew God and trusted His faithfulness. We can also know God and trust His faithfulness. God has promised to be with us always and He cannot lie.

We are filled with joy knowing that we are a part of the Lord's work being done around the world! Our Pastor always asks us to pray for him that he will have the strength to carry out his work each day. So I would say prayer and encouragement are just as important to give as money.
