  1. So that they can provide moral and spiritual support to each other. Elizabeth can comfort Mary by encouraging her through prayer to continue to trust God and to believe that God is faithful to the righteous. That he will give her the strength to withstand any negative onslaught by others and also that God will protect his own. She will be able to recount God's saving acts of the past to Mary to reinforce her hope and trust in the Lord. Mary can be an encouragement to Elizabeth through her humble service, her open willingness to allow God's will to be done in her life, her simple trust. God has sent me to give comfort to the needy and especially to some of those families that have lost everything through fire and floods this week.
  2. Demanding answers from God can lead to stress when we expect God to answer our request in the way we want or we expect God to be at our beck and call just delivering goodies to us without us even asking what is God's will for us in a particular situation. When God doesn't act in a particular time frame that we have set or we get no response to the problem, we can begin to feel stressed and unloved. There are many times in my life where unexplained events have angered me, but I found peace when I brought them in prayer before God as I always keep in the forefront of my mind the words " the Lord is my shepherd there is nothing I shall want. fFresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose." I have learned to quiet my soul by singing songs of praise softly in my soul and by lifting my eyes to God from whence comes my help. I will usually go to my quiet spot and just relax in his presence. Sometimes I read scripture and rest in his word. To hope in the Lord means to trust him with everything and in every situation. To be confident that whether things are good or bad, God will find a way to bring his good out of it because he is always faithful to his promises.
  3. Yes it is legit to use Jesus as he modeled the use of the spiritual gifts when he raised Jairus ' daughter , when he cured the woman with the haemoraging problem when he saw the faith of centurion who wanted healing for his servant. He is not that different from us but we need to have a deeper belief in his power to help us and a deeper trust in him. He himself said in John 14:12 "whoever believes in me will perform the same works as I do myself, and will perform even greater works, because I am going to the Father..." The gift of knowledge in the Old Testament is seen in Bezalel, Oholiab and Ahishamach in Exodus 31:6 in whose hearts God placed wisdom to enable them to make all that he commanded them to. Samson also became stronger when the Spirit came on him. In Judges 6:34 the Spirit came upon Gideon to enable him to fight the Midianites. In the New Testament this gift is seen in PETER and Paul
  4. Q. What was Eli's counsel to Samuel, when he recognized that God was calling to the boy? A. Eli's advice was for Samuel to "go back and lie down, if he calls again, say speak Lord, your servant is listening". Q. Was it good counsel? A. Yes, it was good counsel as it made Samuel pay more attention to the voice and obey the advice that was given. Q. What is the significance of Samuel recognizing that he is a servant? A. It prepares him for service through becoming obedient to the God's messengers.
  5. Jesus suffered for me personally by accepting death by cruxifiction, by sacrificing his life humbly without looking to make excuses to his accusers, so that I would have life with the Father and that my relationship with the Father would be restored. Such great love I can not understand, but I thank God that He loves me that much to sacrifice his only Son for me. Lord help me to love like that without counting the cost to myself.
  6. Q2. (1:2) Why do forgiveness (sprinkling) and obedience come together as a package? Why is it deceptive to think you can have one without the other? Extra credit: If true faith requires obedience, how can we say that we are saved by grace rather than works? Forgiveness requires us to turn away from sin and make a great effort to do what is good and right! And to do that we must be obedient to God's law. We continually fall short of God's law and seek his forgiveness but to truly be sorry for sin there must be a change of heart and behavior and this can only be possible if we are committed to obeying God. No amount of work can pay for our redemption. We are saved by God's grace which was freely given while we were still in a state of sin.
  7. How would you describe the behavior of a Christian who identifies more with his present homeland than his heavenly one? A Christian who identifies more with this present homeland would be one who is hypocritical, who seeks all worldly pleasures to satisfy his needs and longings. Such a person may seek to please others more than God, may be full of pride on account of his/her accomplishments, can be arrogant, resentful, haughty, willing to lie and call it alternative truth. Have you ever caught yourself doing this? Yes, before I came to truly know God I indulged in many of the above behaviors. Although I went to church every Sunday, I wasn't studying God's word for myself to get to know him better. I was not feeding on the word, so most of my actions were dictated by worldly standards. What has to happen to get our spiritual priorities right? We have to spend quality time with God's word so that we can form a relationship with him and draw strength through his Holy Spirit. We also have to submit to His will and be obedient to Him rather than seek our own way.
  8. Hi, I am Sandra T. From Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. I stumbled across this site a few years ago and I have been following a few of the Bible courses but I haven't been on the forum. This is my first time checking in. I started this year with JAMES and I am now doing 1Peter letter. I hope that I will be able draw closer to my Father, God, through this study. I have two grown up children, 2 lovely dogs, and a wonderful husband who plays the guitar in Church. I have recently retired from teaching and thought that I would use my time to draw closer to my God.
