  1. In what sense does the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth? He guided the disciples, the Believers after the disciples and He guides the Believers today into the fulness of truth. Just as He lead the Servants, (Disciples, Apostles, Believers), of the Bible days He does also to the Believers of this day and the days to come. Unto the truth of who Christ is, His Purpose, His Life, His Examples to follow, the truth via the use of His Right Hand, the truth of His witness, the truth of His work, the truth of redeemed relationship. The Holy Spirit guides/ leads the Believer to know Him, into intimacy! Does this promise apply only to the apostolic age and its task of laying the foundations of the faith? No, if the promise only applied to the apostolic age and the laying of the foundation of the faith the promise would not align word upon word, precept upon precept. In what sense does it apply to us today? He yet desires that none should parish, He desires faithful witnesses. Until the day of judgement He has a charge for all of the faith. He desires the Believer to be living instruments/living agents (active). In that charge as we walk in the charge He leads, He comforts, He reminds, He teaches, He empower, etc.… He guides the Believer into all truth necessary to be known edifying the Believer as needed for relationship and for the charge. -- For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
  2. What benefit is there to the disciples that Jesus goes away? John 16:6-7 I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." The benefit for their good and those receiving Christ is redemption; secondly as the lesson points out they as do those walking in the faith become empowered for ministry (He will never leave nor forsake as we abide). What promise do we have in John 14:12 concerning the Spirit's power in believers? John 14:12 - Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. Meaning those adhering to the Spirit's leading in and of faith; abiding to His Will, will have the empowerment to server beyond the refines of a specific location. The Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby, Paraclete would aid and assist when/as need for His ministry, for His Glory.
  3. Why do we believe that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or power, but a Person? The Scriptures identifies Him as a Person; Jesus Himself identifies Him as a Person as He said in John 14:26 "But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you:" What kinds of functions that we attribute to persons does the Holy Spirit do? The Holy Spirit appoints missionaries (Acts 13:2; 20:28), He leads and directs workers in their ministry (Acts 8:29; 10:19-20; 16:6-7; 1 Corinthians 2:13), He speaks through the prophets (Acts 1:16; 1 Peter 1:11-12; 2 Peter 1:21), He corrects (John 16:8), He comforts (Acts 9:31), He helps us in our infirmities (Romans 8:26), He teaches (John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 12:3), He guides (John 16:13), He sanctifies (Romans 15:16; 1 Corinthians 6:11), He testifies of Christ (John 15:26), He glorifies Christ (John 16:14), He empowers (Romans 15:13), He searches all things (Romans 11:33-34; 1 Corinthians 2:10-11), He works according to his own will (1 Corinthians 12:11), He dwells with saints (John 14:17), He can be grieved (Ephesians 4:30), He can be resisted (Acts 7:51), and He can be tempted (Acts 5:9). Why is it so easy to refer to the Spirit as "it" rather than "Him"? In truth I'm not 100% sure, when conducting a word study I'd feel comfortable saying many do so as they discern the meaning of the word spirit. In some translation spirit is rendered as ghost. The King James renders Holy Ghost 89 times, ----Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. ---- The King James version/translation is one of the popular versions/translations. Even though this translation hails "Holy Ghost" a said number of times; and the word spirit having multiple meanings under the umbrella "pneuma" I'm still not 100% sure; I mean God The Father is a Spirit, how often is He referred to as an "it"
  4. What does it mean to "testify"? give evidence as a witness; to declare/pronounce; to confirm or attest something on the basis of personal knowledge or belief, bear witness, be a witness, offer testimony Isaiah 59:12 - For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them; John 3:11 - Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. Revelation 22:16 - I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. In what way does the Spirit testify about Jesus? Can you testify from personal knowledge about Jesus? Yes, when I (we) live out the Word of God adhering to the Holy Spirit I (we) testify of Christ’s life, His teaching, His death, His burial and His resurrection. Even though we are not eyewitnesses of the historical Jesus, we too must bear witness of what Jesus has done in our lives. The personal knowledge I have of Jesus is via the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit has shown me example after example of the historical Jesus overcoming. In turn when I yield and abide I too overcome. Or were the apostles the only first-hand witnesses? The apostles were first-hand witnesses; however there were others during the ministerial years Christ graced the earth. I’d like to say the apostles, the Mary’s, Martha, Lazarus, etc..; and others were intimate witnesses (those at the Lord’s Supper, the Upper Room, etc..). There were other witnesses that were not intimate but yet witnesses the 70 disciples, Zacchaeus, John the Baptizer, the Samaritan Woman at the well, several Samaritans, etc.…
  5. In what sense is the Holy Spirit "another" Paraclete? “John 14:16 - And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter (called to one's aid/assist, advocate, advise, intercede, console, help,…), that He may abide with you for ever” Who was the initial Paraclete? Jesus i.e. God - John 14:17 - … but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you …. In what way can the Holy Spirit replace him? I prefer the Holy Spirit in action more so than replace; the Holy Spirt would comfort as He abides … as he dwelleth with …, and shall be in …. How was he "with" the disciples? Jesus dwelled, lived, abided and was at the disciples in the natural during His ministerial years. When will He be "in" them? He would be in the disciples after His ascension upon their receiving Him (The Holy Spirit); He would not forsake them, He would comfort, guide and instruct them as they adhered to His leading.
  6. Did Jesus do miracles by reason of being the unique Son of God, or by means of the power of the Holy Spirit upon him? By means of the power of the Holy Spirit upon him Why is this important for us as his disciples? As we adhere to His leading we too will glorify the Father according to His Will! In what ways does Jesus serve as our example in ministry? John 5:19; Philippians 2:6-7 We are to die to Self
  7. Who sends the Holy Spirit? The Father or Jesus? Does it matter? In the Book of Beginnings: Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness Genesis 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, Being 3 in 1, my simple answer would be The Lord. The Father or Jesus? In my opinion, be it the Holy Spirit being sent by The Father or Jesus kinda depends on purpose/function and the intent of His will regarding the occasion the Holy Spirit is being sent. Does it matter? It could be said it matters to God and if it matters to God it should matter to us. We are to adhere to the Spirits leading(s)!
  8. What does Jesus' statement, "the Son can do nothing by himself," indicate about his relationship with the Father? He was the epitome of love, walking in faith, of faithfulness in demonstration, of obedience on action; of humility, of respect, of partnership, etc.… (His relationship was intimately SOLID!) Why did Jesus have to "empty himself" from his heavenly glory when he became a man? John 5:17-30, (Philippians 2:6-7); It is my belief He did so because most were not worshiping God in spirit and in truth, although they no longer overtly worshiped idols openly and in secret as they did prior to the 70 years of bondage, the people were not in intimate relationship with The Father. Their ears were not as sensitive as God desired to the true Prophets nor the His Word. Therefore, He through Christ would demonstrate love in action at a level with the hope that mankind would see the LOVE reach.
  9. In what ways is the Holy Spirit active in establishing Jesus' core identity as Son of God as Jesus came to earth? The Holy Spirit (Luke 4:18-19) actively establishes Jesus core identity as He does not walk in carnality as most men, He adhered to the Leading of the Holy Spirit as the Spirit leads. The angel Gabriel and also the fulfillment of prophecy actively acknowledge/demonstrate Christ core identity as well. How does the Holy Spirit establish your core identity as a disciple of Jesus? By faith and faithfulness
  10. What promises do we find in Joel and Ezekiel concerning the Holy Spirit? God promises to give a new heart and put a new spirit within; He promise to take the heart of stone out and give you a heart of flesh (compassion); He promises to put His Spirit within to empower walking in His statutes, and keeping His judgments and doing them. He promises life "you shall live", and I will place you in your own land (restoration onto that which was promised). He promise not hide His face upon reception of His Spirit (intimacy) He promise pour out His Spirit on all flesh (all willing to receive) [As His Spirit guides prophesy, dreams, and visions will be given and come to pass to the recipients of His Spirit for His purpose(s). He promise signs and wonders in the heavens and in the earth He promise deliverance/salvation to those that call on the Name of the Lord Many passages of Scripture informs us the need for God to give a new heart and put a new spirit within. In my opinion, It goes beyond our attempting to discern the difference between upon/on and in. The simple thought is sin, disobedience overpowered obedience; better, betrayal overpowered love! Ezekiel 23 give insight in regards to "Two Sinful Sisters" which in turn could be anyone that professed to be in intimate relationship the Lord. Hosea paints the horrid picture as well. 7:11 “Though Ephraim built many altars for sin offerings, these have become altars for sinning" . Unfortunately, the people placed their trust in other nations, things, themselves, false gods (5:13) their own strength (12:8) rather than the One who is the ONLY true Savior. A new heart and put a new spirit within = God mind/Mind of Christ. The people as do not need God to change our minds, our thinking, but more we need a mind change and a thinking change. A new heart, a new spirit within = Mind of Christ, thinking of Christ. Hosea 6:6 , 1 Corinthians 2:11-16, Romans 8:9 Who are the recipients of these promises? All in adherence to the Ministry of Christ, the Ministry of Reconciliation, all that believe Christ Jesus is the Anointed Messiah, The Lord, The Savior.
  11. What promises does God make through Isaiah the prophet concerning the Holy Spirit and the Messiah? That the Holy Spirit will come upon the promised Messiah, "A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit." How were these fulfilled? According to His Will; according to His manifestation in active action; According to His FAITHFULLNESS; according to His Spirit drawing and being received. In shorth these promises were fulfilled by God Himself through Christ Jesus (in the capacity of Christ). Taking a passage of Scripture out of context: 1 Corinthians 2:11-13 Verse 12 (NKJV) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. (NLV) We have not received the spirit of the world. God has given us His Holy Spirit that we may know about the things given to us by Him.
  12. What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people? "Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? "When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied" Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God’s people? "But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” In truth we can only speculate his longing, I'd like to think in context of the chapter and others, his longing is so that the Lord's will would be done (Numbers 11:16). "Numbers 11:24 …. "When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again". The 70 Elders did prophesy are they did when the Spirit initially rest upon them. As the lesson asserts we can believe the 70 primary call wasn't to become gifted prophets; rather, their gift was to assist with leading God's people and to administer justice. Similarly, in accordance to what many in our day assert the Gift (Ministry) of Helps and Administration. 1st Corinthians 12:7 - But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: rendered in another translation" Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." One may have the gift of helps, while another the gift of administration, and so on.
  13. What is the primary purpose of God putting his Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament? Although there's a difference between upon/on and in; in my humble belief the primary purpose of the Holy Spirit in relation to man, (selective individuals, OT, NT, Presently = to those in/of the Faith), is the same. He (The Spirit) empowers the vessel and as the vessel adheres/inclines to The Spirit he/she is in the Will of God. As he/she inclines/adheres to The Spirit he/she carries out "Thus Say The Lord". What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God? As the individual adheres/inclines to The Spirit's leading the relationship with God is being edified intimately.
