  1. 1. What things does Jesus asks Peter to do and in what order? Jesus asks Simon to “put out a little from shore; “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch”, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men. Why the progression, do you think?
  2. 1. What does Jesus’ ministry of laying on of hands for healing teach us about him? Jesus did not discriminate; he touched and heal everyone no matter the disease; he healed them all. 2. How did Jesus treat the sick people he encountered that afternoon and evening in Capernaum? He took time and met each one’s need individually. Before ministering he found a quiet place from others to hear from his Father. What kind of example does that set for us to follow? He is our example and we should do the same. It’s through seeking God’s direction in prayer we should put fort before going out on our own. We need the Holy Spirit to help us in this ministry and warfare. 3. Which was the more important motivator for Jesus: compassion of duty? Compassion is good, but Jesus was sent for the purpose “because that is why I was sent” (4:43) His duty motivated Him, and His commission and calling came with compassion. Did they ever conflict? Yes. Early Jesus was not able to minister because they didn’t believe (4:22-24) they wanted Him to do miracles like he did in Capernaum. 4. Why is it so hard to maintain a Quiet time? Distraction and commitment. What have you found that enables you to set aside this time? Setting a time and place early in the morning. Any tips to share with the rest of us? I like to start off by listening to three to four teaching via television followed by getting into my personal study
  3. 1. What is the relationship between Jesus’ commission in Luke 4:18-19 and his ministry acts in Capernaum? The relationship between Jesus’ commission in Luke 4:18-19 and acts in Capernaum demonstrated Jesus’ commission in Luke 4:18-19. He preached the gospel to the poor, he delivered or healed the brokenhearted, He healed diseases of those who sought Him out and silent demonic spirits because His time was not yet to be known. 2. Jesus’ words were spoken with conviction and authority, compared to the scribes who often spoke in the synagogue. What was the source of Jesus’ conviction and authority? The source of Jesus’ conviction and authority and divinity came from His Father. Should we expect conviction and authority to attend our own teaching? Our conviction and authority come from the Holy Spirit because “greater is He that’s is within us, than he that’s in the world.” 1 john 4:4
  4. 1. How can it be that Jesus can go from declaring his commission from God on high one moment, to being subjected to an attempted assassination the next? The people in his town had known his parent and sibling , how could this carpenter do these miracles ; the skepticism in Nazareth was to the point "He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. And he was amazed at their lack of faith:( Mark 6:5-6) I am reminded of the scripture that states " When I desire to do good, evil is always present Roman 7: 21 Have you ever experienced highs and lows this extreme? Not at this extreme 2. Why do you think Jesus “rubbed it in” with two stories of God blessing Gentiles while Jews were still in need? His people were not worthy of the miracle, so God blessed those outsiders who did believe. Rejecting God brings judgement on the people and the land 3. Why couldn’t they kill Jesus at Nazareth? They couldn’t kill him because it was not his time to die. Why did Jesus willingly allow himself to be captured in the Garden of Gethsemane? Because it was his time to give up His life for the world 4. How did Jesus show courage in the face of rejection? He showed his courage by doing what He was call to do, " He was in he world, and though the world was made through him the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."( John 1: 10-12 ) What lessons can you learn from his example? Be obedient to my call and trust God to implement the given assignment
  5. 1. Is it reasonable to expect that the power of the Spirit will be as great in a Christian today as it was in Jesus? It is reasonable to expect that the power of the Holy Spirit will be as great in Christian today as it was in Jesus because the word of God tell us that “ I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12)
  6. 1. Is temptation only merely inevitable, or is it necessary to our growth as disciples? We believe and as already been stated that temptation is unavoidable because of our sin nature but our faith needs to be tested to develop strength and it’s necessary for our growth as disciples. 2. What is the essence of the first temptation, to turn stones into bread? The essence of the fist temptations points to that our physical needs must come from and by God’s way. Jesus said “man shall not live by bread alone,” b. What temptations we face are similar? We face every temptation to gratify our selfish needs and wants ,such as, fornicate, adultery, stealing and cheating. 3. What is the essence of the second temptation, to attain power and splendor? b. What similar temptations do we face today? It’s important to know that Satan is not the only way to gain power. The Garden of Eden is an illustration how Satan received his authority but we must remember that we don’t have to achieve wealth Satan’s way, we simply need to trust God, be obedient and serve Him. Similar temptations today are self-gratification now and worry about the consequences later. We saw this in our last presidential election. Jesus said, it is written “worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” 4. What is the essence of the third temptation, to throw oneself down from the temple? How do we face this temptation today? The essence of the third temptation was that Jesus did not temple and manipulate His Father God and at no time did Jesus bow to Satan’s demands. Jesus said “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” We face this type of temptation when we look for instance fame with strings attached to it. 5.Did Jesus have any special powers at his disposal to resist temptation that Christians today don’t have? Yes, Jesus had the power of God’s word as we do today. Therefore, it’s vital to know God’s word.
  7. What do you think Jesus was saying to the Father as he was praying after his baptism? (verse 21) I believe that He was thanking His Father for the “open heaven” because His father said He was pleased with Him, and this was like his anointing for his ministry. Why would Jesus be baptized along with all the sin-laden people at the river that day? He wanted to demonstrate he was fully man and man was required to be obedient to God as other men were. Although Jesus was sinless, He became the perfect man, the pattern for all men. Wasn't he in danger of mis-communicating to them who he was? Not at all, He did not communicate anything, it was His Father who declared that “ You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Why do you think God staged the dove to descend in a visible way? (verse 22) God staged the dove because it symbolized the spirit of God Himself. 4. What was the significance of the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus at this time in his life? The significance of the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus at this time in his life was to identify and to endue Jesus with the power of God. 5. How did Jesus interpret the Voice that sounded from heaven? I believe Jesus interpret the voice from heaven as a stamp of approval from His Father
  8. Isn't John the Baptist's humble statement, "the thongs of whose sandals I am unworthy to untie," a bit overstated? Not at all. Are we unworthy to serve Christ? Yes, I am unworthy to serve Christ but I was made worthy by the blood of Christ Jesus. “urging and encouraging you and pleading that you lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory 1 Thessalonians 2:12 If so, why? If not, why not? 2. What does John's comparison of water baptism to Spirit baptism tell us about what Spirit baptism mean? Water baptism is a symbol of cleansing whereas, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the agent of cleansing and empowerment.
  9. Why do you think John the Baptist calls people a brood of vipers, a den of snakes? Because their teaching and action did not represent their inward attitude. These men were not interest in the kingdom that John was presenting. 2.How did the Jews' religious pride in Abraham keep them from taking John's call for repentance seriously? Their religious pride was self-righteous, thinking that being within the Jewish chosen religion made them privilege from other people . How could religious pride have that same effect on us? Christian may think because they don’t have certain behavior as other’s they are better; For example: Luke 18:9-14 (NRSV) He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. One Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted." 3..In what way does sharing clothing and food with the poor constitute meaningful repentance? Sharing clothing and food with the poor is an outward evidence of repentance. " Faith without works is dead" James 2:17,26 What ways do you find to do this in your everyday life? I am blessed to serve with a congregation that serve the community with fresh produce , clothing and a homeless shelter women and children
  10. Why do you think God chose someone like John to be Jesus' forerunner? God chose someone like John because He knew him before birth, his mother’s Elizabeth, said that John leap in her womb at the voice of Mary’s greeting Luke 1: 41-44. Isaiah 40:3-5 foretells what is fulfilled in Luke 3:1-6 2. How can we be sure that all our personal differences are part of God's plan and purpose? Our Differences can be used because God made us to be different in order that his plan and purpose be carried out. For example: Rick Warren said in his book the Purpose-Driven Life. There are the talkers that love to talk; they are important for communication; Feelers are those that feel things, they are important for compassion, another is the Thinkers, thinkers are analytical who think things through and Reflection is so important in life and the Doers, they get things done, therefore, we need people with various gifts to accomplish Gods plan and purpose. Can't some be patterns of sinful reactions to past events? Yes, for example, individual past additions did sinful acts to support their habits; now clean and helping others to get clean. 3. John was raised in the desert. What kinds of circumstances has God used as a training ground for your preparation? I was raised in a pastor’s home; a family of 10, seven girls three boys in a four room house. Often I was allow to travel with my father to churches miles from our home, not knowing that one day this would be my life. The Methodist would send him to help the congregation build their church, after the church was built, he was sent to another , he did this is ten times. I enjoyed following my father in his ministry. I met and married a deacon who later was called to be a preacher and from that a pastor. He pastor for 40 years, I feel I was prepared and trained from childhood.
  11. Jesus was already the Son of God, why did he have to “grow” in understanding and wisdom? I believe that even though he was the Son of God, He needed to experience every situation, condition and trial that man experience in order to become the perfect Sympathizer or Savior. Therefore, growth and development take time in the season of man’s life. Thus, He grew in his humanity as God intended. In addition, whereas, Jesus at an early age understood his mission but his parent did not. How do you evaluate Jesus’ carelessness in not going home with his parents when they left Jerusalem? (2:43-44) It’s possible since the feast lasted for several days, Jesus was about seeking wisdom to do His Father’s work from the appointed teachers who “sat in Moses’ chair.” If he did this each day, it stands to reason that even though the feast was over, a habit was formed and He did not realize the time. Was Jesus at fault or they? Since Jesus is the child, He is not at fault, it’s the parent responsibility to care for the child until they reach the age of accountability. The parent took for granted he was socializing with boys of his age (12), but Jesus was asking questions, learning and growing in wisdom and understanding with teachers of the Law, knowing the following year would begin his age of manhood. What is the difference between an error in judgement and sin, if any? There is a great different between and error in judgement and sin. Error in judgement can mean something done unintentionally whereas, sin is a stronger term, that implies deliberately stepping over one’s boundary; It’s a choose and we must accept responsibility for our action. Why was Jesus so engrossed in the temple? It was in the temple where He found himself in the midst of teachers where classes and discussion took place among doctors both hearing them and asking them question. These questions were about his assignment on earth. How was this interaction with Jerusalem's top teachers important for his own development? His interaction with top teachers was important for his own development as stated, he was both listening and asking probing, insightful question thus helping him to grow in wisdom and understanding with God and man. How did this represent something that was absolutely necessary for him to do? Jesus interacting with the teacher in the temple was absolutely necessary because it was time for Him to be about His Father’s business therefore, He needed to go to His Father’s temple where he could listen and learn more about the laws of God. while listening and asking question, Jesus was able to learn about himself and his calling. How did this relate to his calling? His experience in the temple at twelve years of age, was a precursor to His life ministry. At the age of twelve he was found in the temple, sitting with teachers, listening to them and asking questions. Those who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. Years later, Jesus now is the teacher still amazing the scholars in the temple.
  12. In what ways do Mary's and Joseph's consecration of Jesus set an example for us? The word consecration means dedication, blessing, hollowing or sanctification. Mary and Joseph ‘s consecration of Jesus clearly set an example parent should model, thus, dedicate or give back your child or children to God and raise them in the fear of God. If Simeon and Anna had never seen the Messiah, in what ways might their lives have been important? In what might your life be important to God? I believe Simeone and Anna lives would have been important because both were example to their community in that they were righteous and God fearing. Both were "sensitive to God’s voice and available when God called upon them”. My life is important in the same manner: By listening and following the Holy Spirit direction, Using the gifts given to serve other and modeling a Christ like character. What did Simeon's and Anna's righteousness, devotion, and praise have to do with their sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's voice? What are some of the reasons that we can't hear God? Simeon’s and Anna’s righteousness, devotion and praise made them more sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s voice. When we are sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, our spirit is open to hear and receive revelation and manifestation you will never expected to see nor can you explain. Some of the reasons we can’t hear God are as follow: failing to study God’s word, communicating with Him on a regular bases and keeping His commandment.
  13. Why do you think the message of Jesus' birth comes to shepherds, of all people? (2:8) What point is God making? It was the first step in God’s plan of salvation; these shepherds were watchman and guards but despised and shunned by many. The point God was making is that He has no respect to person. "And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Luke 5:31-32). "For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence" (1 Cor. 1:26-29). What is the "glory of God" that the shepherds glimpsed? The glory of God that the shepherds glimpsed was the present of God. (2:9, 13-14) Is this glory present if we can't see it? Yes. We may not see His glory but it doesn’t mean He’s not at work. Why are we so conditioned to look to the temporal rather than the eternal? (2 Corinthians 4:18) The flesh looks at what can be seen rather than the eternal. What are the three titles of Jesus given in 2:11? The three title and meaning: Savior who is the Messiah the Christ, the anointed one, rescuer, redeemer, the Lord means ruler. What does this tell us about Jesus' true identity? It tell us about His saving works and His sovereign position

  15. Why does Luke name the Roman rulers in 2:1-2? What point is he making? Luke Name the Roman rulers in 2:1-2 to establish the time of Christ’s birth. The point is that Jesus was born in history and the person in power at that time were Caesar Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire, Herod the Great (Matthew 2:1) and Quirinius , military leader and Roman consul in central Asia Minor. What is the significance of Joseph being a descendant of David? (2:4) The significance of Joseph being a descendant of David mean that Jesus had a legal right to be king through Joseph because his genealogies establish the Lord Jesus as the true Davidic King What is the significance of Bethlehem in Messianic prophecy (Micah 5:2)? According to Luke, Joseph came to Bethlehem with Mary because he was of the house of David, while there Mary gave birth and according to Micah 5:2 this fulfills the Messianic prophecy of Jesus What is the scandal in verse 5? What hardship is Mary experiencing? What about Joseph? The scandal in verse 5 is, Mary is a young pregnant girl pledged to be married to Joseph. Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth; if Mary had stays behind she would face a scandal of being pregnant alone. The hardship Mary experience was, traveling ninety miles in her late pregnancy, but God needed them both to be in Bethlehem at the same time, thus, trusting God even through hardship is the meaning of faith and being obedient
