  1. We cannot in and of ourselves understand the mind of Christ, so it is the Holy Spirit who connects us to the timeless and unlimited thoughts of God and reveals to us little by little truths. Through the Holy Spirit we can know the plans Jesus has for us and the Spirit lets us know what God's will for us is. Since God communicates to us through His Spirit, the Holy Spirit is the intermediate for God and us. Spiritual gifts are given to us by God through the Spirit for Him to work through us.
  2. No, they don't. "And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." (Romans 8:9b) The Father and Christ make their home in us through the Holy Spirit Who is sent to dwell in us. We should love the teachings of God. "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home[87] with him." (John 14:23) The Home Analogy is like the Temple Analogy in that God dwelt in the temple in the Most Holiest of Holies and our bodies are a temple unto God so in the same way he dwelt in the temple, He will dwell in us. It is different in that our bodies are a living temples unto God and God no longer dwells in temples but dwells in us through His Spirit. The Spirit living in us affects our holiness of life in that He cleanses us from sin and lets us know what God desires of us. He empowers us and strengthens us and it shows when we witness to others.
  3. Jesus said that wind cannot be controlled by man and it is the same with the Holy Spirit -- man cannot control the wind but it is God who directs Him. So a person born of the Spirit cannot be controlled by man but will be entirely directed by God alone.
  4. It means to be born again, or born anew as the Greek word anagennaō refers to. I believe the water refers to baptism because when Jesus was baptized, He was first baptized in water, then the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove. Likewise, when we are being baptized in water, we are being purified and when we're baptized with the Holy Spirit, He fills us. A person can be "born of water and the Spirit" by repenting and turning to God and accepted Jesus as his or her Savior and allowing the Spirit to fill him or her.
  5. No, he probably wasn't, since he had not yet because when he came to Jesus, he was curious about what Jesus had to say and had to first understand what being born of the Spirit meant. Therefore, he most likely wasn't already born of the Spirit. People who have experienced the second birth can spiritually discern and enter the Kingdom of God.
  6. Jesus invites anyone who is thirsty to come forth and He will pour on them a "spring of water welling up to eternal life". Jesus promises believers rivers of living water will flow from within in, which is the Holy Spirit. There are many moments in my life in which springs of living water have been fulfilled and I pray that God will continue to fill me with His Spirit that I will continue to overflow with rivers of living water.
  7. The Holy Spirit will remind us of what Jesus has already taught us. He will not be teaching us anything Jesus hasn't already taught but every time we read the Word He will reveal something new to us. No, it does not apply only to the apostolic age but to every person who believes. The Holy Spirit will continuously empower believers. It applies to us today as the Holy Spirit helps us discern the Word and gives us different revelations every time.
  8. Jesus's death will bring salvation to the world and then the Spirit will be sent to dwell in the disciples after Jesus goes away. They will be his witnesses unto the ends of the Earth and they will preach the good news. Jesus promises us that the Holy Spirit will empower us and guide us and teach us in the ways that we should go. He will remind us of what Jesus has done and enable us to take after Him.
  9. We believe the Holy Spirit is a Person because there are numerous areas in the Bible that refers to the Holy Spirit sometimes with a neutral term but sometimes with the pronoun "He" and this is not a mistake because the Bible was written by God-inspired people so the pronouns wouldn't have slipped past but were put there for a reason to show the Holy Spirit is a Person. There are many but a few are Him comforting us and Him glorifying Christ and testifying about Christ. It is easy to refer to the Spirit as "it" because people never viewed the Holy Spirit as a Person but rather as an object or a force. But this is false because in the Bible there are numerous circumstances that shoe the Spirit should be referred to as "Him" since He is not some kind of force.
  10. To "testify" is to bear witness, to confirm or attest something on the basis of personal knowledge or belief. The Spirit testifies about Jesus by constantly reminding the disciples of what Jesus taught them. "He represents Jesus and makes Jesus' teaching clear." Yes, we can testify from personal knowledge about Jesus because the Holy Spirit dwelling in us reveals to us God's Word. The apostles were one of the first-hand witnesses but we too can testify about Jesus.
  11. The Holy Spirit is "another" Paraclete because Jesus is the first Paraclete and He said that He will " ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor (paraklētos) to be with you forever." Jesus was the initial Paraclete. The Holy Spirit "replaces" Jesus in the sense that while Jesus lived alongside the disciples, the Holy Spirit lives within us. He was with the disciples within them. "But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you" (John 14:16-17). When Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit will be "in" them.
  12. We find promises of God pouring his Spirit on His people and men and women prophesy and see visions and dreams. He gives us a new heart and a new spirit and helps us follow His ways. And anyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved. The recipients of these promises are anyone who believes in God and believes Jesus died for them.
  13. "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all who mourn." - Isaiah 61:1-2. God promised that a Rod will come out from the stem of Jesse, i.e. a descendant of David, Jesse's son, and the Holy Spirit will be with him. God promised that He will bring justice to the nations and to heal the hurt and set free the imprisoned. These were fulfilled when Jesus came to Earth and proclaimed the gospel and when Jesus died and freed us from our bondage.
  14. The Father sends the Holy Spirit. Jesus sends the Spirit through his Father. "I will ask the Father" (John 14:16), "in my name" (John 14:26), "I will send you from the Father" (John 15:26). These are the verses in which Jesus sends the Spirit through his Father. It doesn't matter Who is sending the Spirit because all three work together, dependent on one another. The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are one.
  15. He did it by the means of the power of the Holy Spirit. "Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit." (Luke 4:14a) "And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick." (Luke 5:17b) These are instances where Jesus ministered through the Spirit. This is important because knowing that Jesus did not accomplish this as a divinity but rather through the working of the Holy Spirit helps us know that we too can do this. When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, we can follow in Jesus' footsteps. He serves as an example by living a normal human life but not getting into temptations but abstaining from them and living a pure and holy life.
  16. (John 14:10) "Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." The Father works through Jesus. He could not do anything by himself because He came to Earth as a man, not as God. He needed God the Father and the Holy Spirit to work through him. This also shows how dependent Jesus is on the Father as the Trinity works dependent of one another, not separately. Jesus had to "empty Himself" because if He came to Earth as a man then He could not be an example for us to follow. But since He came as a man, we can be assured that we too can lead a Godly life if we are willing.
  17. The Holy Spirit was active during Jesus birth because Jesus was born of a virgin. The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you" (Luke 1:35). This was said to Mary. The angel then appeared to Joseph later in a dream and said, "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost" (Matthew 1:20). Finally, when John baptized Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended on Him as a dove (Luke 3: 21-22). The Holy Spirit was present throughout. The Holy Spirit established my core identity as a disciple of Jesus when I accepted Jesus and became born again, and again when I first got baptized.
  18. What enables the 70 Elders to lead the people? The Holy Spirit What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon them? They began to prophesy. Why does Moses long for the Spirit to come upon all God's people? Moses wanted everyone to prophesy like 70 elders.
  19. What is the primary purpose of God putting His Spirit upon selected individuals in the Old Testament? God putting His Spirit on selected individuals is to empower them and for Him to work through them. What effect does the Spirit seem to have upon their relationship with God? The Spirit transforms the people's lives and causes them to have a closer relationship with God.
