Legalism allows one to feel self satisfied thinking that following a set of rules proves your worthiness. Following rules and putting down those who don’t makes a person feel superior.

It’s a common thread through most of Paul’s letters so the problem of exclusivity toward Jews was a common disagreement in most of the churches. Paul often used OT scripture to prove that from the beginning, the Gentiles were included in God’s plan of salvation.
