    Q4. (1 John 2:15-17)

What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives?

Examples of sins covered by worldliness:

    1. the **** of the flesh covers: adultery, gluttony, killing, sloth, wrath

    2. the **** of the eyes covers : selfishness, envy

    3. the pride of life covers: pride, greed, deceit, lying tongue

Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves?

Because in some cases they have been part of daily life for so long that they become

  2. Q2. (1 John 2:12-14) John encourages "children," "young men," and "fathers." Why do you think he takes time to encourage them? In what ways does he encourage them?

    Q2. (1 John 2:12-14)

John encourages "children," "young men," and "fathers." Why do you think he takes time to encourage them? In what ways does he encourage them?

I see this encouragement of John as a reminder to them so that they may not slip. In the beginning of the chapter, in 1Jo2:1 John says [/b]

  3. Q1. (1 John 2:7-11) How does hate and unforgiveness blind us spiritually? If we have been darkened by hurt and hate, how do we come into the light?

    Q1. (1 John 2:7-11)

How does hate and unforgiveness blind us spiritually?

He / She who is not able to forgive is spiritually blind because he / she is not able to see that he / she himself / herself needs forgiveness from other people and from God. If a person is not able to forgive he / she is not able to exercise love. How can he / she expect to be forgiven?

Hate is the opposite of love. Unforgiveness occurs when we can not exercise love and, instead, we keep on hating people not understanding that we also offend people and God. That is really spiritual blindness.

If we have been darkened by hurt and hate, how do we come into the light?

The only way we can come into the light is by ACCEPTING AND LOVING AGAIN THOSE WHO HAVE HURT US

  4. Q5. (1 John 2:3-6) How can we be serious about obeying Christ without become legalistic and judgmental, with a self-righteous attitude like the Pharisees had? How do love and legalism differ? How can we be serious about obedience and make love our center?

    Q5. (1 John 2:3-6)

How can we be serious about obeying Christ without become legalistic and judgmental, with a self-righteous attitude like the Pharisees had?

    First, we must want to be like Him Who only did the will of God, the Father. God is light. The will of God is that we walk in the light (not in the darkness), guided by His word and not by worldly desires;

Second, we must recognize that we are not good enough to fulfill the will of God without fail. So, no man or woman is in position to grant his own salvation by his / her own effort of doing things right as commanded by the word of God. We will fail, now and then.

Third, whenever we fall, we must be able to go to Jesus Christ in repentance asking for forgiveness. He will forgive us. That is His promise.

How do love and legalism differ?

Legalism has to do with law or the emphasis to the law when it comes to codes of conduct. As mentioned before, when we think of salvation on mankind as based on their good deeds, then we can say, for sure, no man will be saved. BUT when we see the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross as the atoning sacrifice, then we will understand what LOVE is. It is due to His great love that he saves us by grace. That is the difference between legalism and love: LEGALISM DOES NOT SAVE ANYBODY, LOVE DOES!

How can we be serious about obedience and make love our center?

The word of God teaches us that love is the greatest of all virtues. So, if we are serious about obedience we must exercise love above anything else, and any other virtue will develop around love.

  5. Q3. (1 John 1:9) How would you define "confession"? Why is confessing our sins so important? What happens to us if we stop confessing our sins? What are the promises given to us if we do confess our sins? How is forgiveness of sins different from cleansing?

    Q3. (1 John 1:9)

    How would you define "confession"?

A: For me confession is the act of recognizing and admitting one
