(1 John 3:22) We know that God doesn't "owe" us anything. So what is the relationship between obedience and answered prayer? Do we "earn" God's favor through obedience? By being obedient God is more likely to grant our non-essential prayers. No we cannot earn God's grace, we have to learn it by learning to be obedient to His Word and showing that that we will be grateful for God's favors.

(1 John 3:16-18) What does it mean to "lay down your life for your brothers"? What are some concrete examples of this kind of love in action within the Christian community? If you are in a large congregation, how can you get to know other members so you'll be able to lay down your life for them -- and they for you? If you see your brother needs something and you have it, you should give it. If someone comes to you and is hungry, don't just pray for them and send them on their way, help do something about it. Talk with then in genuine conversation. Get to know them so that you can grow to genuinely love them.

(1 John 3:15) How can anger turn into hatred in our hearts? In what ways do anger and hatred relate to murder? How can we get rid of stored-up anger in our hearts so that we may love those who have offended us? If we hold on to anger, it seethes and turns into hatred. Anger and hatred come from the same spirit as murder, in order to murder someone you have to be angry and hate them. Repent daily, forgive our offenders and ask for forgiveness ourselves.

(1 John 3:12-15) Why did Cain resent Abel? Why did Cain kill Abel? How does the story of Cain and Abel illustrate Jesus' explanation of why the world hates us? Because Abel's offering was accepted and Cain's was rejected. Cain was jealous of Abel because Abel was accepted because he was righteous, and Cain was rejected because he was not righteous. The world is jealous and hateful towards Christians because Christians are righteous and not of the world as the world is not righteous.

(1 John 3:3-10) How does John's teaching on sin and righteousness in this passage relate to combating the false teachers? What did they seem to be teaching about sin and righteous living? John is teaching us to know the difference between true and false docterine, by the acts and teachings of teachers, anyone who is living righteous is loving is brother is of God, anyone who is not is of the devil. False doctorine teaches that sin is of little importance, and it is ok to satisfy the flesh.

(1 John 3:6, 9) How does the presence of God's seed in us keep us from habitual lawlessness and sin? How does the Holy Spirit sanctify us and make us like Jesus? It keeps us from continually repeating sins and change our ways. The Holy Spirit helps us to be aware of when we are about to sin and turn from it.

(1 John 3:4) How does lawlessness show up in a person's attitude and actions? In what sense is an attitude of lawlessness the cause of sin in our lives? We can be actively rebellous and have an attitude of "No one can tell me what to do", or passively rebellous and feel that there are such things as trival or meaningless sin. When we feel either way, we are saying we don't have to listen to what Jesus' has said.

(1 John 2:28; 3:2-3) In what way does our expectation of Christ's Second Coming motivate us to purify ourselves from sin? How does purifying ourselves from sin relate to God's grace? Since we do not know when He is coming, we have to stay ready for His return. We can't just rely on God's Grace, yes He shows us Grace once we learn it, we learn grace by repenting from sin and trying to wash away sin from us.

Q1. (1 John 2:29-3:2) In what sense are we "children of God"? What does the Holy Spirit have to do with this "new birth"? How does the new birth change us? We are children of God because He created us. Through the Holy Spirit we are born again This new birth gives us a new begining and a chance to live in the Kingdom of God

Q5. (1 John 2:26-27) If we have the Holy Spirit, why do we need teachers in the church? How does the role of the anointing differ from the Holy Spirit's spiritual gift of teaching? To equip the saints for the work of the ministry. When one has been anointed, he has received the Holy Spirit and now has a descernment of right from wrong. Holy Spirits gift of teaching give us naturing and maturing us by way of annointed teachers and the Holy Spirit guiding us away from false teachings.

Q4. (1 John 2:24-28) What does it mean to abide/remain/continue in Jesus? Give an example of what a Christian might be doing who is "abiding" in Jesus. What are symptoms in a Christian who is not "abiding" in Jesus? To abide in Jesus is to act according to His teaching, at all times. If a person sees someone who is less needs a coat, that person gives him their coat. Or someone who is teaching or testifying about the goodness of God. Some who is judging others, not showing brotherly love. No applying the teachings they learned in their everyday life.

Q3. (1 John 2:20, 27) In what ways is the Holy Spirit an internal Guide for us? In what ways does he teach us? In what ways does he point us to Jesus' teaching? The Holy Spirit is an internal Guide as His presence lives within us, once we receive Him. He alerts of evilness, to protect us. He testifies to us about Jesus' teachings. He teaches us and reminds us of Jesus' teaching.

Q2. (1 John 2:20-21) What is the "anointing" that John is talking about? In what way is anointing connected to the Holy Spirit in the Bible? Do you think that each Christian has received this anointing? The anointing John is talking about is the anointing of the Holy Spirit by Jesus Christ. The anointing is connected by the Holy Spirit because Christians are anointed with the Holy Spirit. Not all Christians have. Some are still seeking this anointing.

Q1. (1 John 2:18) What is this antichrist that John expects to come? What is the difference between the antichrist and antichrists in the church John is writing to? In what ways do we see the spirit of antichrist at work in our day? I believe the antichrist John expects to come is the same one described in Daniel. The one who will come forth at the begining of the end of times. The difference between the two is one is will be The antichrist, who the others are working through. The ones in the church are those who are teaching false docterine and are working to lead people away from Christ. The way we see the spirit work today is the teachers of false doctorine, those who speak against Christ, all the ungodly acts of today, that are supposedly "in the name of God".

(1 John 2:15-17) What kinds of sins are covered by the three examples of worldliness that John gives? Why are these sometimes so difficult for us to discern in ourselves? Why is worldliness so harmful to our future? The three examples of sins here are: **** of the eyes, cravings of the flesh and boasting or pridefulness. People sometimes sees the first two as sexual. But also they are of material things. People sometimes want a house, but want a "big" house. Why, so people will take notice? People need to pay attention to "the whys", of why we want things. There are sometimes sinful reasons. Wordly desires are temporary and will pass by. Spiritual desires are eternal.

What is "the world" in verses 15-16? What kind of love of "the world" keeps us from loving the Father? The world is materialistic possesions or persons we love more than God. A love where we take high esteem in possesing, things we boast over, or if we had a choice in serving God or keeping something/someone, attending to some place, or taking part in something. If we are not willing to give up these things to serve God, this love is good.

John is encouraging children,young men and fathers, to help keep them encouraged and strong in the Lord. Also to help them "see" where they are in their relationship with Christ. John assures them, that no matter where they are in their relationship they have the Love of the Lord.

It puts us in the darkness and we cannot see in the doctor. Let the hurt and hate go and forgive the person who caused it so that we can be forgiven. And come into the light.

We need to follow the commandments in the Bible, especially the commandment of Love. Love is unconditional, Legalism is about keeping track of actions or deeds and treating people by the deeds they do, being judgemental. Practice, meditate on the scripture and strive to walk as Jesus walked when he was on this earth.

If we sin, we have Jesus to be our advocate and speak to God for us. This comforts us because Jesus proves His love for us, by giving His life for us. And God proves His love for us, by sending His Son to die for us. We do not want to disappoint God or Jesus, as they love us and we do not want to disspoint our loved ones.

How would you define "confession"? Why is confessing our sins so important? What happens to us if we stop confessing our sins? What are the promises given to us if we do confess our sins? How is forgiveness of sins different from cleansing? Confession is stating truthfully, the wrongdoing that you have committed. It is important to confess, so that we may ask God for forgiveness, and we may not continue walking in darkness. If we stop confessing our sins, we will not be not be forgiven until we do, thus we will continue walking in darkness. God promised us taht if we confess our sins, He will forgive us our sins, as well as cleanse us from all unrightousness. Forgiveness is forgiving us our sins we have committed. Cleansing us in wiping out our character flaws which prevent us from being more like Jesus. Forgiveness is for our salvation, cleansing is sactification

When a Christian is walking in darkness they are not being honest with themselves and are living a lie. A Christian who is walking in the light has fellowship and will be purified with the Blood of Jesus from all sin. In order for a Christian to come back from darkness into the light, one must be honest about the sins commited, ask for forgiveness and change their behaviors. This must be done daily as we all sin. But the most important thing is to have an awareness of it, confess, ask for forgiveness and work to not continue repeating the same sin over and over again.

While there are some who will trully express themselves, most will only state the safe response in a group setting. Discussing a topic and "going with the flow" on the response. When speaking on a deeper level we need to be open and honest and not be afraid to discuss what God wants for us, and use Bible scripture to show our point. In our studies we need to ask more questions and give a Biblical response rather than what we think should be the response.
