  1. Paul prays for discernment for the Philippians so that they can better determine truth, God's truth. This is especially relevant as Paul later speaks of those who don't have good intentions even while preaching the Gospel. This also includes the judaizers and those who desire personal profit (the good?) more than the greater prize(the best!) of eternity in God's presence. Discernment results in God-based priorities and choices, bringing glory and praise to God. Selfishness clouds discernment because it is just that SELF-centered instead of Christ-centered. Focusing on our own needs instead of serving God. "The good life" or "the good" may distract us from our inheritance, keeping us from experiencing all that God has for us. The good changes - but our eternal home in heaven is greater than this and will never change.
  2. I believe that Paul expects God to continue to grow the church at Philippi as well as each individual member. His confidence in God to mature the church and individuals believers is quite evident. The basis of this confidence is that he sees God at work in them already, by their fruit. My own confidence in this same expectation of maturity is based on God's continual grace and love manifested in Christ. After all, God never changes!
  3. I believe we recieve a share of the responsibility as well as the blessing-overall, supporting the work of the spreading of the Gospel, and perhaps, in a small way, fulfilling the Great Commission. Prayer, fasting, encouragement, hospitality are some ways in which we might also offer support to those who are active in the ministry of the Gospel.
  4. I believe that while the text may say "servant", the explanation given from the Greek denotes a much more than just a "hired hand". I believe that just as slaves were bought, so too, we were bought at a price-Jesus redemptive work at the cross. Having been bought, we are then, in turn given a special designation as saints-to be a slave to our Master-our God first and foremost. I confess I cringe at times when a person is chosen for "sainthood". As believers, while not perfect, we are all saints Therefore, the two together say to me that I am "the property of Jesus, bought by Him, for God's sole(soul ) use. Set apart to serve Him first.
  5. Hello Family, My name is Donna, I live in Jersey City, NJ and this is my first time in the forums, tho I have studied with Joyful Heart before. I'm getting started a bit late as I had some computer problems but I will catch up quickly. Philippians is one of my favorite Pauline writings. I look forward to hearing others views and sharing my own. Yours in Christ, Donna C http://abidingways.org (My personal ministry site-up but not yet running the race)
