God saw Gideon as a mighty warrior, the person God was going to enable him to be. Gideon, on the other hand, saw himself as inferior. God's perception is of course the accurate one because He is always right! Our self-perception can hinder what God wants to do in us because we fail to see ourselves the way God sees us.
