  1. Q2. (Psalms 42-43). What is the psalmist feeling during this spiritual struggle? I think the Psalmist is feeling lonely, he wants to tangibly feel God's presence. He is feeling abandoned (vs 3"where is your God?"). He is depressed. How does he combat his spiritual depression? He pulls up his bootstraps and tells himself to hope in God and praise God. He reminds himself of all God has done. He thinks on whatever is right, true and praiseworthy.He commits to praising God in this darkness. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Have you ever felt this way? How did you reach out to God at this time? Sure! Everyone has I assume. When I feel depressed it is usually because I am focusing on my own selfish, wants or circumstances instead of God. My soul is NOT panting or thirsting For God but rather worshipping my own desires. Eventually, when I wake-up to the fact that I am spiralling away from God, I call out to Him and cling to Him until he rescues me. Putting on a Phil 4:8 mindset really helps stop the pity, pain and powerlessness. Reveiwing His faithfulness gives me a stronghold on which to stand. I long for the day where my heart will harbor this mindset naturally!
  2. What does it mean that David desires to "dwell in the house of the Lord"? David want to be near to God. He wants to be in an ongoing, close, abiding relationship with Him. What does it mean to "seek his face"? Seeking God's Face means to seek God's will, to draw near to Him to know Him more. How does David provide hope at the end of this Psalm? David says he is confident he will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. He will live to see God's hand intervene for him.
  3. Q3. (Psalm 139). In what way does the wonder of creation in the psalm seem to affect the psalmist? In his concluding prayer in verses 23-24, what does he ask God to do? The wonder of creation puts the psalmist in a right relationship under God. Recognizing all of God's omniscience and omnipotence in creation helps him to understand how GREAT God is and how He is in control of all the many details which surround our lives, including the very building of our bodies. This continual reminder of all that God is helps me to rest in his power and understanding as well. When he asks to be searched and cleansed, i believe it is out of a sincere desire to draw near and obey God. This continual cleansing ( and acceptance of Jesus's payment for the many sins which we commit all the time), is imperative for a close abiding relationship with a perfect God.
  4. The common thread is the subject of adoration. The psalmist recognizes God's authorship and authority in Scripture. The opening line that the law is "perfect" sets it in an entirely different category than and other written material. As we worship the LORD basking, washing, soaking in the written Word unifies are hearts with His purposes. The tangible worship of this song acknowledging, surrendering, and seeking God permeates each of the three sections. It seems that getting in a right place before the Creator, Law, and the Redeemer is the primary focus of the psalter.
