  1. Q4. (1 Timothy 4:12b) 1. Rigid, unsmiling orthodoxy can teach right doctrine, but cannot produce godliness. Why not? A. Because it takes more than just following the rules, Jesus said it well: Matt 5:21-22a "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Israel had a problem; they followed the law but they didn't have it (the law) in their hearts; Jesus was trying to get to the matter before it showed itself. Long before the action has been done, its a thought, long before the action it started in the heart. 2. Why is a strong example of godliness in church leaders essential to a healthy church? A. If the leaders didn't show by example then the people would soon follow suit. Paul said follow me as I follow Christ, Jesus showed us that it could be done and the disciples followed that example just as the people follow leadership.
  2. Q1. (1 Timothy 4:1-2) Q. Why does Paul remind Timothy (and the church) of predictions concerning widespread apostasy? A. So that they would be reminded and that it would be no suprise when they (Timothy and the Church (you and I)) see it. Mark 13:21-23 (Jesus speaking) 21
  3. Q3. (1 Timothy 3) 1. Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers? A. Because their home life and how someone acts or re-acts is an indicator of how they will do as officers in the church. One or all or even any of these factors can make the church non effective or give a bitter taste to the lay members of the church. 2. What happens when you don't consider these factors? A. When you don't consider these factors (andger, itimidation, force, and pride) we bring on much harm to the body of Christ and it breeds more of the same as officeres of the church and and it's members.
  4. Q1. (1 Timothy 3:2-12) 1. What kind of leader do you believe Paul is indicating for us with the phrase "husband of one wife"? This phrase "husband of one wife" indicate that as a leader he should be faithful and if he could not be faithful to his wife then he couldn't be faithful to his flock that God has entrusted into his hand. Also what is being said here is that as leaders we must go against the immoral standards in this pagen culture so prevalent in Ephesus. 2. Why is a leader's family an important indicator of leadership potential or problems? Because One who runs his house well will do likewise with the church, and the family is the smallest unit and how can you be faithful with bigger things when you can't be faithful with the small.
  5. (Judges 6:7-10) 7And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, 8That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; 9And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; 10And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice. Q1. a) According to the prophet, what is the reason for Israel's oppressed state? A] The reason for Israel's oppressed state is stated in v:10 "And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice. " Israel feared the god of the Amorites more than they feared GOD so they began worshiping the Amorites god, they forgot what GOD had done for them. They soon found themselves in idolatry. Q1. What commandment did they break? A] The children of Israel violated the first commandment Ex 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Q1. c) In what way hadn't they "listened"? A] I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; 9And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; 10And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice. GOD tells reminds the children of Israel of how He had delivered them from their enemies and as I am sure that these stories were past down from generation to generation as refered by Gideon as he questioned the Angel of the Lord. (13And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.) Q1. d) In what way does this same sin affect Christians today? A] Many of us as Christians today would say that we would never commit such an act against GOD Himself, why to have an idol that we would go to and worship that's uncivialized. But as we've grown cival in our culture we forget that we have a formidable enemy the devil and he still uses the same trick he's just more civilized about it.
  6. Q2. (1 Timothy 1:12-14) 1) Why does Paul comment on his own life after a paragraph on the law (1:8-11)? A) Because when Paul was in the law, he was ridged, stiff much like the law itself but Paul shows the mercy of God even the grace of God by explaining who he was; a scoffer, one who hunted wond and did all that he could to bring harm to the name of Christ and for this he was thankful. 2) Why does he share this with Timothy and the church that will read the letter? A) He shared this with Timothy and the church to show them that if God could use him, if God could change him then His mercy and grace could extend to anyone. 3) How might sharing this help get the church back on center? A) Because Paul used the contrast of the Law and Gods mercy and they knew that the law could not be kept so why go back, but Paul also wanted them to remember God's forgiveness and grace (unmerited faith).
  7. Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission? 1. What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? There appeared to be confusion to the members of the body in Ephesus with the false doctrine and as a result of this false doctrine Paul left Timmothy there while he had gone to Macedonia to handle something else that was apparently very important or I'm sure that he would have stayed there in Ephesus to handle himself. Now as a result of the false doctrine being taught there was confussion, and controversies. All of the differnt ideas and thoughts that came from these false teachers were taking the people off of God's work and taking them on rabbit trails if I might say so myself. 2. How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? It causes meaningless arguments and fighting and that defeats the comand of v:5 of Love (Charity) 3. How does it prevent growth? 1Co 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4. How does it keep the church from its mission? It takes the church away from it's original goal and ties it up on small fires instead of focusing on the true fire.
  8. Q1. (Hebrews 1:2) In what way do you think the author of Hebrews is using the word "Son"? As a metaphor? As a biological relationship? How would a Son's words have more weight than a prophet's? By looking at the context of the verse in which the word Son comes to us we can see that the author is refering to Jesus in a biological term, but again if we look at the whole of the two verses :1 & 2 we can examine why what was said. Heb 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; God did not reveal all of Himself in any one time. The process of revelation was a continuous one, in which the recipients received ever-increasing revelation of God. At no time in that older process did they have a complete idea of God. At first they began to understand His creative power. Then they perceived something of His moral demands and His character as Judge as He sent the flood to destroy the evil in the world. Soon they were to see Him as a covenant-making God taking the initiative in establishing a covenant with Noah by means of a rainbow; then establishing a threefold covenant with an old shepherd and his wife, Abram and Sarah, promising them 1 offspring in great number, a 2 land in which their children would dwell, and finally that 3 all nations of the earth would be blessed through their descendants. They perceived Him as a God interested in individuals and families, while yet judging the nations of the earth. Later God revealed that in spite of His judgments, He would always save a remnant and from that remnant bring about a new people. The whole world would discover Him to be a God Who would pay a tremendous price out of redeeming love for the salvation of all people in Jesus Christ. God spoke in bits and pieces at various times and through different methods (Prophets), but revelation was not complete, The author implies a whole different category of being, superior to that of prophet
