  1. Q3. (Galatians 6:9-10) Why do we tend to become weary living out our faith? Sometimes become physically exhausted but most of the time because we do not see any tangible reward What promise does Paul give us in 6:9 to forestall this weariness? We will be rewarded in the future if we do not give up' Why should our “doing good” begin with our spiritual family, not with the non-Christians? In order to help those in need who can then continuing to help others. This help to bulid a stronger unit bwho can continue God's work.
  2. Q2. (Galatians 6:7-8) What does it mean to “sow to the flesh”? Living to satisfy the fleshly desires. What does this look like? All form of sin which is to satisfy the pleasures of man. (sexual immorality, gluttony, gossip, slandering, dishonesty, drunkeness, gambling, revelry, strife making, unkindness, pridefulness, lack of brotherly love) What synonyms does Paul use for “sow to the Spirit” in Galatians? The same as 'walking in the Spirit', 'being led by the Spirit' , 'keeping in step with the Spirit' and 'living in the Spirit.' (Hint: see 5:16, 18, 25). What does sowing to the Spirit look like in a congregation? Bearing each other burdens resulting in a harmonious and loving congreation exhibitng the fruits of the Spirit. (Galations 5:22-23 love , joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.) What are the results in a congregation of sowing to the flesh? The opposite of the fruits of the Spirit will be displayed and will result in death without eternal life.
  3. Q1. (Galatians 6:1-5) What does Paul mean, “caught in a sin”? Christians are tempted and if they yield to the temptation they have sin. Sin can come upon (catch) us. So Paul means where we sin unexpectedly other can help to restore us. What would restoration of a such brother or sister look like in his or her life? Restoration will not involved praying with the person and leading them gently back. Who should restore this person? The spirit-filled should do the restortion. In what spirit should it be done? In the spirit of humility. What is the result of trying to restore a person without humility? Restoration without humility leads to self righteousness in the restorer. When the person to be restored sees the pride in the restorter they find it more difficult to sense the forgiveness of God and the way back becomes more humiliating and difficult.
  4. Q4. (Galatians 5:24-25) What does it mean to “crucify the flesh with its passions and desires”? We must let the Holy Spirit work in us to prevent giving in to our fleshly desires. We are always seeking to satisfy our fleshly desires and passions believing thes will brin us joy. But as is stated in 1John 2:15-17 We should, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16. For all that is in the world, the **** of the flesh, and the **** of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17. And the world passeth away, and the **** thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (KJV) Can a person be a Christian without “crucifying the flesh”? No to be a Christian means to be Christ like. We are told that Jesus was tempted as we are but resisted all temptation and provides a way out for us to also resist temptation. How have we produced such a crop of lukewarm Christians? By making them believe that belief in God is enough, Jesus died for all sins so they are not sinning when they sin and that the grace of God means they are so loved they can do whatever they like.
  5. Q3. (Galatians 5:22-23) How does the Holy Spirit produce this fruit in our lives? By changing our hearts. What theological term would you use to identify this process? Sanctification. How can it be that a person who has been a “Christian” for years displays few or none of these fruits? They have not allowed the Holy Spirit to work in changing them. Some christians have been heard to say I born so so I cannot change. Jesus told Nicodemus that he had to be born again in order to see the Kingdom of God. Are they saved, but just immature? They are not saved. They have not grown in grace or in the Spirit of God. What does James 2:17-19 say about this? Is that too harsh? Faith without works is dead. They faithmust be demonstrated. No it is the truth. Unless the truth in the word of God is not compromised we will all perish.
  6. Q2. (Galatians 5:22) The fruit of patience should be understood as forbearance, that is, putting up with people around us without exploding. Why is this patient forbearance such an important personal character element? It is essential in our daily existence, we will meet with those persons who oppose us or tax our human endurance. Our reponse to them must be Christ like. Our reaction often cause these persons to stop and ask from where we get such forbearance thus giving opportunity to talk about Christ working in our lives. Why is it so important for peace in the family and in the Christian community? Without peace in a family it will be always living under stress and unable to solve tits problems. Thus spending less time as a family in family or individual devotion and worship. Lack of peace in the Christian community hinders God's work since the time is spent in beckering on some persons part and others trying to bring these persons together when this time could be spent praying for and working with the unsaved.
  7. Q1. (Galatians 5:22a) Love is the first and primary fruit of the Holy Spirit, but joy and peace are inseparable from love. Why can’t joy and peace exist apart from love – love for God and love for our neighbors? We cannot have the peace and joy that God offers without first loving the way He expects to love. None of these fruits we can achieve on our own (flesh), they can only be accomplish through the working of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.
  8. Q4. (5:21) Why do some Christians resist accepting Paul’s warning in 5:21 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11? What statement might these Christians desire to substitute for Paul’s warning if they could reword the Scripture? (Justification by works of the law) GRACE
  9. Q3. (Galatians 5:19-21) If you were to divide the works of the flesh into several groups, what would those groups be? Sexual immorality, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, murders, drunkenness and orgies.
  10. Q2. (Galatians 5:16-18) We are told that it’s impossible for a Christian to live a sinless life. What do these verses teach about that? If we have the indwelling Spirit of God we would not sin. In what way does yielding to the Spirit suppress the power of the old nature (the flesh)? The Holy Spirit frees us from bondage to the corrupt sinful nature and contends actively with the flesh to keep us from sinning. If Spirit-led living is possible, why do people claim that it’s impossible not to sin? Even though we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we are still tempted by satan who is seeking to cause our downfall. People give in to the temptation even though God has said He will provide a way out when we are tempted. We just have to take the way out God offers thus it is not impossble but possible. People have to remember temptation is not sin, it is only when we give in to the temptation that we sin.
  11. Q1. (Galatians 5:13-15) Have you ever seen Christians act as if they were lawless? Yes. They gossip, tell lies and run red lights etc. How do Spirit-led Christians fulfill the spirit of the law? By acting in love. When they demonstrate love towards God and their fellowman. What does backbiting and rudeness in a congregation say about the spiritual climate of that congregation (5:15)? That the climate is toxic. The Spirit of God is absent in such an environment. We need to be born again, put off the flesh and live in the Spirit.
  12. Q5. (Galatians 5:11) What is “the offense of the cross” that offended the Jews? 1. The Jewish leaders had Jesus crucified -- but he turned out to be the Messiah prophesied in Scripture. 2. Grace reigns, not law. Jesus' atonement for sins on the cross means that we are made right with God by Christ's death, not by obedience to the law. How does the cross offend people in our day? They don't believe that Jesus died and rose again Have you noticed Christians softening their proclamation of the cross? Yes. Does this help them communicate more clearly to our age or does it compromise the true message? Anything which takes away from the word of God compromises the true message. The belief that Jesus died for our sins (faith in God) is the only way to salvation.
  13. Q4. (Galatians 5:5-6) Circumcision had been the primary “mark of identity” for a believer in God. In what way has the Spirit become the new “mark of identity” for the believer? The spirit circumcises our hearts. What is the evidence of the Spirit’s presence in a believer’s life according to verse 6? Love. (Loving God with our our heart, soul and mind and loving our neighbours as ourselves.)
  14. Q3. (Galatians 5:4) Exactly what does Paul mean by “fall from grace” here? Moving away from protection of God and His favour. What has occurred that has caused this fall? Being circumcised, which meant they had to obey all the Jewish Laws. How can present-day Christian legalism cause such a “fall from grace”? If we seek to make ourselves righteous, by our own selfrighteous works, rather than by faith in God.
  15. Q2. (Galatians 4:19-20) How is Paul’s grief over his spiritual children like that of a parent seeing children stray? He laboured in bringing them to Christ, comparing his struggle with child birth. He boroght them from idol worship to a God their could not see but that possesses awesome power. What does it look like when Christ is formed in a person? The person changes from their old sinful nature to a more Christlike person displaying the fruits of the spirit. What is the process involved in this spiritual formation? Spending time in prayer, listening to God's voice, obeying God's leading in ones' life, bible reading and instruction in the word by a man/woman of God.
  16. Q1. (Galatians 4:10-11) Is celebrating different special worship days essentially wrong? No. Can be beneficial to believers. Why did Paul grieve over the Galatians’ observances? It would have been a backward, foreign and unneccessary step. What significance did these have in terms of their movement towards Judaism? They believed that these observances were essential to their salvation. This was not true. How can we be blessed by observing special days in our era? The observing of these can be a reminder to believers as well as a way of drawing none believers to Christ. For example this present Lenten Season helps to focus us and others on Jesus' suffering, death and ressurection. An essential in the Christian faith. How can observance of special days become legalistic for Christian believers? If more emphasis is placed on the observance of the day instead of its significance. For example if we focus on the nativity at Christmas as a babe in a manger we would worship a baby not a risen Christ. That is why we need to focus our children's attention not only on the manger but to the empty tomb as well and their significance.
  17. That is why we need to focus our children's attention not only on the manger but to the empty tomb as well and their significance.
  18. Q4. (Galatians 4:6-7) How does the Spirit’s filling demonstrate we are full sons? God send the Spirit into our hearts to demonstrate that we are full sons thus giving us what he gave to His Son Jesus Christ. The Spirit thus testifies with our spirits. What is the special sense in which the Aramaic word abba is used to speak to one’s father? It is like a word of endearment like when we say in English daddy, dada or pappi What is the significance of being heirs of God? We are not only entitled to his possesssions but we can approach without fear and know that we can ask Him for anything. Are we sons in the same sense that Jesus was God’s Son? Jesus is the only begotten Son but we become joint heirs with Him so we have same entitlement.
  19. (Galatians 4:3-5) In what sense were both the Gentiles and the Jews enslaved? The Gentiles were enslaved by paganism while the Jews were enslaved by the Mosaic Law. What does “redeem” mean in verse 5? Redeem means made free through purchase. By the blood of Jesus Christ our sins have been paid for so we are free. What are the implications of adoption regarding a person’s legal and spiritual rights? An adoptive person have is entitled to enherit from his parents. We Christians are entitled to the same inheritance as Jesus God's only begotten son because of our adoption into the family of God.
  20. (Galatians 4:4) Why do you think it took so long to send the Messiah? God chose the right time to send the Messiah. He came at God's chose time not our time. Which appears long to man. What about the first century world made it fertile ground for the revelation of the Messiah and the spread of the gospel? 1. The time was right religiously. The Old Testament canon had been completed, the synagogue system had developed to the point that it functioned as a school, a court, and for worship. In Israel at the time there was also a fervent expectation of the Messiah's coming. 2. The time was right culturally. There was now a common language (koin? Greek) spoken throughout the known world and a common Greek culture was widespread. 3. The time was right commercially. The Roman system of roads connected the empire, making it easy for the gospel to spread from city to city and from country to country. 4. The time was right politically. Rome had instituted a common system of law that resulted in the Pax Romana (the Roman peace) There was very little armed conflict, and the roads were safer. This made travel from one country to another much easier and safer.
  21. Q1. (Galatians 4:26-29) Do you think Jewish Christians regarded Gentile Christians as second-class citizens? Yes, because they did not obey born as Jews thus not obeying Jewish laws. What is the basis of our unity in Christ? We are all equal because of faith in God.(There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:28 In what way does this unity pull down barriers? We are are all equal. (If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." Gal 3:29) Do any groups continue to be regarded as second-class citizens in our congregations? Yes, some races and poor persons are treated as inferior also persons who known prostitues, drug addicts or homosexuals. What should we do about this? We should spend time in pray asking God to make us one. Every effort should be made to help these persons and include them where possible.
  22. Q4. (Galatians 3:19-25) What was the purpose of the law? 1. To restrain fallen human nature, 2. To make wrongdoing a legal offense, and 3. To point us to faith in the Messiah as our only hope. Was it intended to justify a person? The law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. (3:24) In what ways did it restrain sin? It became an offense to break the law. In what ways did it expose sin? It showed what sin was by identifying what acts would be considered sinful.
  23. Q3. (Galatians 3:10-14) What is Paul’s argument for salvation by faith based on the concept of the “curse of the law”? Jesus became curse for us by his death on the cross so salvation comes to us through faith not through the law which is cursed for anyone under the law. Christ through his death on the cross redeemed us from the curse of the law. On what basis do the Gentiles receive “the promise of the Spirit” (3:14)? It is through Jesus Christ that the blessing of Abraham come to the Gentiles. Thus receiving the promise of the Spirit through faith.
  24. Q2. (Galatians 3:6-9) What is Paul’s argument for salvation by faith based on Abraham? Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness. In what sense are we “children of Abraham”? Belief in God, faith, makes us children of Abraham because God promised Abraham that through him all of the nation of the earth will be blessed.
  25. Q1. (Galatians 3:2-5) What argument for salvation by faith does Paul give from the presence of the Spirit? The the Holy Spirit came upon the Galations because of their faith not by obeying the Jewish Law of circumcision. He reminded them that the miracles which were done amon them was by the Holy Spirit because of their belief of his teaching of salvation through Jesus Christ. Obeying Jewish Law would be a backward step. What does this tell us about the spiritual environment of the Galatian churches? The spiritual environment of the Galations churches was a heathy, rich in the spirit one. It however was not confident in belief of the power of Jesus Christ because the allowed the men from Jerusalem to put doubts in their minds. How can we regain this dynamic environment in our own congregations? We can regain this by each person seeking God's face with pure, clean hearts. Too many Christians see church as a place to go once a week and then live the rest of the week as they please. The HOLY SPIRIT does not dwell in unclean temples. We want unity in the church, great fellowship and miracles in the church but we are unwilling to allow the Holy Spirit to cleanse us of our selfish, insincere attitudes towards each other. We can have this dynamic environment when we learn to forgive each other and let the power of the Holy Spirit cleanse us of all unrighteousness.
