I think in the heat of the moment, he was talking about his immediate persecutors. Corporately, he was talking about all of us. The thought of my putting him there is shameful, and a constant reminder of just how sinful I am.
On the larger scale, I like to think of his death as ending forgiveness under the law (temporary), and beginning forgiveness under grace (permanent while alive, and forever after we die).
His death is the single most important event of my life, because I condemned him, and he forgave me, all at the same time.
