  1. We Christians must always abide in the truth. The arabic letter "N" does NOT stand for Nazarene. . [From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia] Nun is the fourteenth letter of the Semitic abjads. ITS SOUND VALUE IS [N]. In Arabic, nun means large fish or whale. The Phoenician letter gave rise to the Greek nu, Etruscan N, Latin N, and Cyrillic H. . Origins Nun is believed to be derived from an Egyptian hieroglyph of a snake (the Hebrew word for snake, nachash begins with a Nun and snake in Aramaic is nun) or eel. Some have hypothesized a hieroglyph of fish in water as its origin (IN ARABIC, NUN MEANS LARGE FISH OR WHALE). The Phoenician letter was named nun "fish", but the glyph has been suggested to descend from a hypothetical Proto-Canaanite na?ลก "snake", based on the name in Ethiopic, ultimately from a hieroglyph representing a snake, ...
  2. 1 Corinthians 16:22 Q). Whom does Paul curse in this verse? A). Paul's curse was a warning against his opponents. "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema (cursed)..." (1 Corinthians 16:22) # Q). Whom does he invite to come quickly? A). Paul invites Jesus to come quickly "Maranatha (O Lord, come)". (16:22) # Q). Why, do you think, Paul looks forward so much to Christ's coming? A). I think the pressure and stress of being a faithful servant for Christ was a great burden to Paul sometimes. His missionary work and the tribulations of this world caused Paul to hope for Christ to come quickly.
  3. 1 Corinthians 16:8-9 Q). What does it take to continue to minister in the face of opposition? A). We must fully surrender our life and future to Christ in order to continue to minister in the face of opposition. Jesus told his disciples to "take up your cross daily," by which he meant, be willing to die each day if need be. # Q). Why does opposition nearly always accompany success? A). opposition nearly always accompanies success because we are in a spiritual war zone. # Q). In what way does this require spiritual warfare? A). If we are effective in our work, spiritual forces will be upset by a shift in power and go after us. For every action in the spiritual realm there is an equal and opposite reaction. And so we must arm ourselves for spiritual warfare. . "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:10-18)
  4. (1 Corinthians 16:4-7) Q). What does Paul's wording, "if the Lord permits" teach us about making plans? A). Paul prefaces his future plans with reference to God's will. Elsewhere in the New Testament, we see among God's servants a reverence rather than presumption about making future plans. # Q). Why is planning without this mindset actually arrogant? A). The arrogance is in the presumptuous sin of expecting God to always grant us good fortune because we are so special. . "Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins..." (Psalm 19:13)
  5. 1 Corinthians 16:2 What does this teach us about regular giving? A weekly offering should be given: "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store..." (16:2) # About proportional giving? Paul instructed them to give in accordance to their ability: "...as God hath prospered him" (16:2) # About planned giving, rather than last minute giving? Paul's point is that they make preparations ahead of time, "...that there be no gatherings when I come." (16:2)
  6. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Q). Why do we sometimes get discouraged serving the Lord? A). Sometimes there seems to be no end to the tedious work we do. And there are rarely any immediate benefits. We sometimes get the feeling that we are wasting our time and energy. Our faith can temporarily become overwhelmed by doubt. We feel like we can't make any progress and we become discouraged. # Q). What does this exhortation contain to encourage and motivate us? A). This exhortation encourages and motivates us by the truth of the resurrection and its guarantee of life -- and reward -- beyond this life. . "...forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord." (15:58)
  7. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 Q). What does this passage teach us about Christ's coming? A). The resurrection will come according to God's own schedule. # Q). In what ways does it encourage us? A). Jesus said "For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day." (Luke 17:24)
  8. 1 Corinthians 15:24-28 Q) . What does this passage teach us about the subordination of the Son to the Father? A) . This passage teaches us that the Son shall be subject unto God. "And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all." (15:28) # Q) . How can that be consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity? A) . This passage is consistent with the doctrine of the Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity declares that the Father and Son and Holy Spirit are equal in Person, but the Son and Holy Spirit are subordinate in role -- "ontological equality, but economic subordination," that is, "equal in being, but subordinate in role." That understanding of equality and role is apparent in the very words "Father" and "Son."
  9. 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 Q). What is the core of the gospel according to this verse? A). Jesus was crucified as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. He was buried and was resurrected from the grave three days later. After he arose from the grave he was seen by over five hunderd people. Then he ascended into heaven. And whoever will believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Amen. . (see John 3:16)
  10. 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 Q). In what sense is our salvation dependent upon us continuing in faith? A). We may backslide or fall by the wayside if we fail to continue walking in faith. # Q). Why is the doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints important for us to understand? A). The doctrine is important for us to understand because it addresses the eternal security of the saints.
  11. 1 Corinthians 14:39-40 Q). In your particular congregation, which parts of verses 39-40 are most needed in order to bring your congregation into a biblical balance? A). What's most needed is acceptance of speaking in tongues as a valid spiritual gift.
  12. 1 Corinthians 14:26-33 Q). How are Paul's instructions to those who speak in tongues in verses 27-28 similar to his instructions to those who prophecy in verses 29-32? A). Those speaking in tongues and bringing prophecy should speak one after another and not interrupt each other. # Q). How do they differ? A). Speaking in tongues requires a person to interpret the words. the value of speaking in tongues is usually for prayer, praise, intercession and as a Language of Thanksgiving. Words of prophesy do not require an interpreter. The purpose of congregational prophecy is three-fold -- strengthening, encouragement, and comfort. # Q). How might we hold meetings today that allow for the Spirit to inspire spontaneous contributions to the gathered people? A). If we hold meetings that are filled with prayer, thanksgiving and personal witness it may move the Spirit to inspire spontaneous contributions to the gathered people.
  13. 1 Corinthians 14:5-25 Paul does value speaking in tongues. What does its value seem to be according to verses Q). 2, 4, 17, and (perhaps) Romans 8:26-27? A). The scriptures seem to indicate that the value of speaking in tongues is usually for prayer, praise, intercession and as a Language of Thanksgiving # Q). How are the Corinthians abusing speaking in tongues? A). The Corinthians were abusing the gift by taking pleasure and pride for speaking in tongues publicly.
  14. 1 Corinthians 14:1-4 Q). What is the value of prophecy over tongues, according to verse 4? A). Speaking in tongues is directed to God, while prophecy is directed toward men and women. The tongues speaker builds up himself, while prophecy builds up the church. # Q). What does prophecy typically do to benefit the church, according to verse 3? A). The purpose of congregational prophecy is three-fold -- strengthening, encouragement, and comfort.
  15. 1 Corinthians 13:8b-13 Q). Why is it important to Paul's argument to contend that even the greatest spiritual gifts will become obsolete? A). The gifts will be obsolete because when Christ comes we shall be perfect and the gifts won't be needed. . "But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away." (1 Corinthians 13:10) # Q). Why does he stress the permanence of love? A). Paul stresses the permanence of love because it is rooted in the very character of the Eternal God. "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love." (1 John 4:8)
  16. 1 Corinthians 13:10 Q). When do you think the "perfect" comes? A). I believe the "perfect " comes when Christ returns (eschatological view of cessation). # Q). How do you support your interpretation? A). An eschatological view of the cessation of spiritual gifts conforms with Paul's more general statement in 1 Corinthians 1:7 "So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:"
  17. 1 Corinthians 13:4-6 Q). Which one or two of these tests of agape love do you have the most trouble with? A). I have the most trouble with Irritability and Keeping score. # Q). How might prayer help you grow? A). It might be helpful if I pray as Jesus encouraged me to do in the Lord's Prayer. # Q). How will walking with the Spirit help you deal with these flaws? A). When I'm walking with the Spirit my mind is focused on God's will and I am less likely to indulge in self-centered attitudes and actions. . "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the **** of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16)
  18. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Q). What is the result of the greatest imaginable manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit done without love? A). In God's estimation the gifts without love makes their contribution nothing. # Q). Is it possible to operate a gift of the Spirit from a selfish or wrong motivation. Which make us more spiritual -- Gifts of the Spirit or Fruit of the Spirit? A). Yes it is possible to operate a gift of the Spirit from a selfish or wrong motivation. The Fruit of the Spirit makes us more spiritual than the Gifts of the Spirit. The gifts are spiritual (Spirit-led) only when they are accompanied by the Fruits of the Spirit.
  19. 1 Corinthians 12:27 Q). How are you hurt by the people who don't use their spiritual gifts for one reason or another? A). I am hurt by those who don't use their spiritual gifts because we are members of the same body. "And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it;" (1 Corinthians 12:26-27) # Q). How much richer would your congregation be if you -- and everyone else -- were to use their spiritual gifts? A). When all members of the church are using their gifts, the entire congregation becomes healthy and more effective in doing His work. # Q). What might happen in people's lives? A). People's lives might become more fulfilled as the congregation uses all of its spiritual gifts. # Q). What might be the community impact of your congregation? A). The congregation gets richer and healthier. And a great revival takes place.
  20. 1 Corinthians 12:11 Q). What are several lessons that we learn from verse 11? A). The Holy Spirit distributes the gifts to each one individually. The Holy Spirit distributes the gifts according to his own will and plan. I don't get to decide my destiny. God does. I can minister the gifts with power as I yield myself to God. # Q). What is the role of the Holy Spirit in spiritual gifts? A). The Holy Spirit empowers the gifts. Humans only employ them by faith. . "...Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts." (Zechariah 4:6)
  21. 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 Q). Has God used you in one of these nine spiritual gifts -- or someone you know? A). God has used me to help some people with their emotional healing. Over the years different people have said that I have helped them feel better emotionally. I don't seem to realize how I've helped except to pray for them. I trust that it's the Spirit working through me to be able to help some people with that type of healing. # Q). How has this gift help build up and strengthen your congregation or community? A). It has helped by assisting people to become more connected to others and to themselves. It is my hope and prayer that they are being drawn to God and receiving His grace, mercy and salvation. . "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
  22. Q). Is it legitimate to use Jesus as our example in the use of spiritual gifts? Or was he so different than we are that we can't pattern our ministry after his example? # A). I believe that it is legitimate to use Jesus as our example in the use of spiritual gifts. My spiritual gifts aren't usually manifested as miracles or signs and wonders. He has endowed me with a set of core gifts that I must continually develop by daily discipline and obedience to His will. There are times when I experience a unique anointing under some circumstances. I call those occurrences miracles. When those signs and wonders do occur it is always a result of His grace and mercy. There's nothing I can do to MAKE God perform a miracle for me or anyone else. Jesus was and is a miracle worker. He is the Son of God in the trinity. His example of using the spiritual gifts was to show us what perfection looks like in this world (...Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.). He gives me a high spiritual standard to work toward and the gifts I need to do His will. I must pattern my service after Jesus' example in order to use my spiritual gifts the way He intended.
  23. 1 Corinthians 12:7 Q). What is the purpose of spiritual gifts? A). The purpose of the gifts is "for the common good". Spiritual gifts are given to build up the church. # Q). What happens when people don't employ spiritual gifts for their intended purpose? A). When spiritual gifts are not used for their intended purpose they can hurt the congregation. # Q). What happens when a whole church full of people start using their diverse spiritual gifts? A). When a church full of people use their diverse spiritual gifts with wisdom God's purpose can be fulfilled. And a revival of the spirit can be manifested.
  24. 1 Corinthians 11:28 Q). What kind of self-examination at the Lord's Table is appropriate? A). Before we partake of the bread we need to examine our hearts, and then evaluate what we see. If the Lord reveals a problem, then we are to repent of it. The apostle Paul was instructing the Corinthians but his words hold true for the church today. # Q). How do confession and repentance fit with self-examination? A). Self-examination is required so that we can know exactly what sins we should confess to and repent from. # Q). How do confession and repentance serve to bring spiritual health and character change? A). It is by confession and repentance that we are set free from the power of sin and the penalty of sin. And it is by our commitment to the spiritual practices of confession and repentance that He continues to sanctify our hearts. . "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9) . "I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins." Isaiah 43:25
  25. 1 Corinthians 11:26 Q). In what way is the Lord's Supper a proclamation? A). Every time we partake of the Lord's supper, we proclaim His death for our sins: "For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come." (1 Corinthians 11:26) # Q). To whom is the proclamation made? A). The proclamation is made to all who participate in and to those who witness the sacrament of the Lord's supper. # Q). Why is this important? A). It is important because Jesus commanded the disciples to do this in remembrance of His new covenant. The Lord's supper is an enacted proclamation of Christ's death and atonement for our sins. # Q). What happens to the church when its proclamation shifts to a different central theme? A). When the proclamation shifts to a different theme (other than His death for our sins) the church is not receiving the true covenant.
