  1. Q5. (Hebrews 2:16-18) Why in God's plan did Jesus have to become human like us? He became human so that He could help us specifically. If he did not become human how could He relate to us or even more so, us to Him. Because he experienced everything that we experience in the way of suffering, trials and tribulations, He is more than able to show us how to respond and not sin in any given circumstance. He shows us how to relate to God the Father at all times no matter what. In all seasons, Jesus is our example of the perfect human relationship to the Father and with the Father. All of this fueled by the Holy Spirit power to do what we could never do in our human stregth. How does his humanity provide encouragement and help to us when we are in trouble?
  2. Q4. (Hebrews 2:14-15) What was the purpose of Christ's death according to verses 14 and 15? To destroy the devil who held the power of death. Also, to free all of us who all of our lives have been afraid of death and held in bondage because of fear and shame and all the rest of these things that cause anxiety to the human spirit apart from God. In what sense is this mission accomplished? This mission is accomplished by the work of the Cross. Jesus Himself said it best, "It is Finished!" In what sense will it see its final completion in the future? Perhaps when Jesus makes His final return and Satan is thrown into the lake of fire. What is the result in our lives from Christ's accomplishment? Complete freedom to approach God in right relationship to worship Him and serve Him only, without fear of condemnation or eternal death. Eternal life is promised!! Praise be to the Triune God!!
  3. Q3. (Hebrews 2:10) What does it mean, to bring many sons and daughters "to glory"? It means to bring us through this life victoriously dependent on the Father via whatever means necessary so that we can realize our need of a relationship with Him to live the abundant life promised in His Word. In what sense did Jesus become "perfect" through suffering? He was always without sin that is not the issue. He became the example of what perfect relationship with the Father and others looks like this side of eternity. Through suffering, Jesus our Lord experienced the extremes of everything we can expect to experience in this earthly life. In this way, we can be assured that He knows exactly what it is like to go through every heart-ache imaginable in our human lifetime. What are the implications for our own lives? As above, we can be certain that Jesus knows and understands our human frailties even though He Himself was never frail. He treats us with endless compassion, patience, love mercy and grace. Praise to You my Lord and Savior!!
  4. Q2. (Hebrews 2:9) In what way did Christ "taste death for everyone"? His death was the atonement for everyone who has ever live. All this so we will have eternal life and never really experience death. Of course we will have a physical death, this is unavoidable. But, we will live in eternity with the Triune God. Why is this so dependent upon God's grace? There is nothing we can do for God. He initiated the whole of the universe, it was all His idea. When Adam and Eve chose to disobey God and rebel against His authority, it left the legacy of a root of 'wrong being' in the rest of humanity to follow. We are born this way. Much like a birth defect. We didn't choose it but there it is amyway. The only remedy is the one our Merciful, Gracious God provided through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All this revealed and ever-present with the indwelling Holy Spirit...all this is a gift to be received. It is already done...there is nothing we could or should add...just receive. If Christ died for your blackest and most stubborn sins, what are the implications for you? I am to receive it and believe it, end of story. It's that simple and that complex all at once.
  5. Q1. (Hebrews 2:9) In what ways did Jesus suffer during his life and death? He was born in a stable and laid in a drinking trough for farm animals. Then he lived in relative obscurity until it was time for his earthly ministry to begin. When it did, he was ridiculed, rejected, despised, and challenged by the heirarchy of the Jewish upper eschelon. Finally, he was torchured publically and killed in the most humiliating manner in the culture of the day. All the while knowing that he was the Son of the Creator of the Universe. He chose the nails on our behalf...it is an unspeakably precious gift! In what ways are we likely to suffer? I believe we can expect to suffer in many if not all of the same ways that our Lord suffered. In particular, rejection, ridicule, and abandonment of those whose loyalties are in the world. Does suffering have any value? It absolutely does, in fact, many times it is the very thing that causes us to seek the face of God at all. In suffering we see our need in a way that 'the good times' lends us to forget our need of a Savior. Suffering keeps us knowing that it is impossible to live the life we are called to as Christians without our Triune God. I'm learning the value of 'praising in the storm' for it causes me to focus on my Savior and not the circumstance. What happens when we live in such a way to avoid all suffering? Our lives become very long with very shallow roots. Much like the tumble weed that dies and gets uprooted them gets bound up in a barbed-wire fence somewhere alone and wxposed to the elements.
  6. Q4. (Hebrews 2:3b-4) In what way has the truth of salvation been confirmed to you? My like, heart, mind, and perspective have radically changed since Jesus Christ saved me. His Holy Spirit dwelling inside me have been gradually,as promised in God's word, transforming my heart and mind to become like Jesus' heart and mind. The 'proof' is in the manifestation of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in my life. Would signs and wonders help or hinder establishing the truth of Christ's ministry today? I'm not really sure. The truth speaks for itself and stand alone. I think in modern society there are many distractions in the form of technology, media, and the like. The most profound truth is really the most basic...one that the child's heart can understand. When we, especially in the USA begin to realize that material possessions cannot hold a candle in value to the priceless gift of salvation and eternity spent with Jesus, then a wonder beyond what touches the senses begins to occupy and grow within our souls. Then, is causes us to consider the needs of others before our own. From which portion of the Bible have you formed your opinion of the value of signs and wonders today? I would say the portion of Matthew's gospel that addresses 'the little children'. Matthew 19:13-15
  7. Q3. (Hebrews 2:1) In what ways are we not immune to drifting away from the gospel? We are not immune in every way. We are human beings that left to our own devices, without daily input from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ about how we are to conduct ourselves, we are capable of drifting and leaning on our own intellect and reason which are fallible in everyway. According to the author, how can we successfully resist the tendency to drift? We must pay more careful attention to the words of Jesus rather than the things of this world in order to keep from drifting. As Paul wrote to the Ephesians 'Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.'(Eph 6:10-11). This is not an act of human will power, we must continually depend on the power of the Holy Spirit in order to resist the tendency to drift. How did Jesus describe this phenomenon of "drift" in the Parable of the Sower? The first category of drift is described of people who hear the truth and their hearts are far from God. They are not even on the path. The seed of truth is snathched away by 'the evil one' and the truth never even gets the opportunity to grow a root at all. The next type of drift is one that hears the truth, receives it with joy but never attends to the seed's care and feeding. The root does not take except on a very superficial level and when testing and trials come, they quickly fall/drift away, blending into the crowd'. The third type of drift is when the seeds of truth become mingled with 'the thorns'. This accurs when the seeds of truth in our heart become overshadowed by other concerns of life, wories about finances, worries about others' spiritual condition, anything that takes our mind off of Jesus and the seeds of truth He plants in our heart, will choke out the seeds of truth and make them unfruitful. This is why Jesus Himself said'Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.' (Matthew 6:33) We are not to let circumstances of life hinder our faith in our Triune God in anyway. We are not to worry about anything for everything is provided by God Himself.
  8. What about the author's description makes you think that the Son described is himself devine? Th author's description states that Jesus is the owner and heir of all things God created. Not only this, but God created all things through Jesus. Only a devine Son could, by God's almighty power, be appointed to such a position of authority. It is God-given to His devine Son, not for mere human beings but devinely appointed to God's One and Only Son, Jesus Christ. What role does the Son have in doing the Father's will according to these verses? Jesus role is to carry out the devine plan of the Father which is to uphold the univers by His mighty word of power, especially the words He spoke to us while on the earth. He was also sent for the purpose of taking on sin and death for the whole human race. He is the perfect and final sacrifice for all the sins of mankind past, present and future. He accomplished a complete atonement for the whole of mankind then ascended, bodily, into heaven to rejoin His Father, God, after completing His earthly assignment. Thank You Lord Jesus!!!
  9. I believe the author meant Son as a biolgicaly, spiritually linked representation of the Father, the One and only true God. A person with this extremely personal intimate relationship sent by God himself and who claimed to come for the purpose of doing the Father's will the entire time he was on the earth is extremely influential. By Jesus own consistent message throughout his life said "I and the Father are One. If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father." A prophet on the other hand, reports that he/she is relaying a message from God to human beings for a devine time/purpose that which, in turn we are supposed to respond to in some way.
