I bleieve Paul was telling people that they are to pray everywhere continually for all things. Not just publically to look good and/or scorn people.

He wanted people to know that Jesus came to intercede for us and is the go between to God and us. Because he paid the price for us we must go thru him to God.

Bacause the false teachers were leadng people away from the Gospel, telling them they needed to follow Jewish tradition. Paul wanted make it clear that the Gospel was for everyone and to leave the old tradition and focus on Jesus.
