Both Abraham and Melchizedek had a mutual understanding that the God Most High(El Elyon) was creator of heaven and earth. That He was the highest of all god's, kings, and lord's known and unknown. There was no one or nothing above the God Most High(El Elyon). I also think that Melchizedek's coming on the scene when he did was a way for God to confirm His presence to Abraham. To let Him know that He exist in the spirit realm and in the flesh and He is everywhere. In heaven and on earth. That He will be with you no matter what you may be facing. That He will fight your battles and deliver you from your enemies, that He will supply your needs, and that He will make Himself known to you. Hallelujah!!
