  1. Jerusalem is being attacked by Sennacherib. Instead of turning to YHVH for help King Hezekiah made his own preparations. “He removed the protection of Judah But you did not look to its Maker, nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago.” The inhabitants had lost faith in YHVH to protect them. As such in the face of death they took to their own pleasures such as drinking and other behaviours. King Hezekiah remained faithful. As the inhabitants were in danger they did not pray to YHVH for help rather they took on sinful traits. Shebna was a servant of King Hezekiah, both a steward and a scribe .These were both positions of honor and responsibility. Shebna was a proud man. He made himself a beautiful tomb! In that day, this was a display of significant power and wealth. Doing this, Shebna personified all of Jerusalem with his obsessive self-interest. Isaiah had prophesied that the people of Judah and Jerusalem would be carried away into exile but Shebna didn’t believe it. He built this elaborate tomb to himself in Jerusalem. I feel that I should do more for my Abba than what I am currently doing.
  2. Unbelief in Yahshua is a stumbling stone for orthodox Jews. One can see how is has divided the Jewish people. Belief in Yahshua represents safety however unbelief results being broken into pieces Daniel 2:34 refers here, Yahshua is the stone. The trap and snare again alludes to those who do not believe in Yahshua.1 Peter 2 6-8 shows Yahshua as a stone of stumbling. People are broken as they will be overcome by their enemies in this case most probably Assyria. Some people harden their hearts to YHVH’s words and continue with their daily life of sin. Some people give up and feel they cannot please YHVH Tsidkenu and backslide as they are not willing to please YHVH or feel they are not righteous enough.
  3. Isaiah has a message to preach. The people were spiritually blind to YHVH’h words. This was because they would not repent of their sins. History shows that Judah at this time was strong in might. However under Uzziah there was much social and religious corruption. People’s hearts had become hard; people did not want to follow YHVH’s word. Yes Isaiah’s mission was difficult as the people’s hearts were already hardened to sin. Isaiah’s mission would be confrontational to them and make them worse. I guess you can compare them to Pharaoh. These are people that are spiritually dead. The parable was that of the Sower it represents people whose hearts have grown cold to the word. It’s interesting because in verse 11 the word mystery is used this is the Ruach Hakodesh working in people’s hearts. As such it is a mystery concealed to the hard of heart. But to the true believer it is a mystery revealed they hear the word, they obey, and they repent. There is frustration in preaching the gospel. People will be unreceptive to the word. Some will listen and will backslide. Some will be true believers the remnant.
  4. Isaiah is woeful he is expressing sorrow. He has seen the Kadosh (holiness) of YHVH considering that Isaiah himself was righteous. Isaiah realises how dirty he is in the presence of YHVH. YHVH sends one of his angels with a coal to cleanse Isaiah of his sin. It’s interesting in that one can assume that the coal is a type of Yahshua who also cleanses our sin. After the cleansing YHVH asks who shall I send? We see that Isaiah has been cleansed he is now able to work for YHVH and volunteers himself. When YHVH calls us for work we must cleanse ourselves through repentance if we are willing to try to hear YHVH he will use us. But we must empty ourselves of sin and try hard to work for him.
  5. This will be a time of peace. The nations will come to Jerusalem in peace and not war. Their weapons of war swords and spears will be transformed into articles for farming or for peace and usefulness. The Gentiles will come into Jerusalem to learn the Torah the instruction of YHVH. If we compare this to Daniel 2:44 this will be YHVH’s kingdom that will last forever. All of us will be judged by the word of YHVH. Righteousness will be a feature of the new kingdom. The Jews will live in the light of YHVH they will finally realise that Yahshua is the true Messiah. Our spiritual hunger will be nourished by the Torah
  6. Q1. (Isaiah 1:2-20) In what way is Judah confused about its identity, according to verses 2-4? History shows that the Assyrian Empire was on the rise. YHVH was angry with the Judeans for they had abandonment worship of him and had an obsession with idolatry. Isaiah chapter 42 verse 8 refers. It’s interesting that YHVH uses the Heaven and the Earth as witnesses; hence the principle of two witnesses is at work here. Judah is confused as the people have fallen away. Their relationship with YHVH had become lukewarm or fallen away. A type in comparison with the church of Laodicea. What are the consequences when Christians today suffer from such identity confusion? We no longer become a set apart people we partake in what the world offers us. For example indecent behaviour, greed, not obeying the commandments of YHVH. This then leads to sin and back sliding. We become lukewarm in our relationship with YHVH as such we abandon righteousness. What injustices does God accuse his people of in verses 15-17 As Judah began learning the ways of the pagans such as idol worship. They were insulting YHVH it is mentioned that when praying the hands were spread and the body was in a state of prostration this is an act similar to offering prayers to Ishtar. The people had lost the concept of righteousness they were meant to be priests. As such they were to act in an example of honour. The example of widows and orphans these were vulnerable members of society as such the people of Judah needed to act in a righteous manner. In verses 18-20 God argues that their behaviour is "unreasonable." Why is it unreasonable? What does God offer as an alternative? Scarlet and crimson are mentioned these are striking colours they portray sin while white symbolises purity. Judah is sinning this is why their behaviour in unreasonable. They have turned from righteousness to evil in the sight of YHVH. YHVH wants them to be obedient to him and not the pagan example. This is similar to revelation 3.20 Judah has to make an effort to be righteous if they do, their sins will be forgiven they need to repent. If they repent they will be forgiven.
