Q5. Strengthening the Inner Person

Recommended Posts

The inner man(heart) is the spirit. The inner man needs constant and regular spiritual strength to face the trials, temptations and stand strong in the faith. Our thought life, emotions and desires should be brought under the control & Lordship of Jesus Christ otherwise flesh will take full advantage of inner mans weakness and makes a believer to become weak in spiritual life.

As Paul prays for the strengthening of the inner man,we too need to pray that the power of the Holy Spirit be strong in our lives so that we may lead a victorious life over sin and temptations.

Paul is praying that God will give spiritual power so that we may be able to experience the full benefit of our relationship with the Lord.

This may be an established fact. However, as humans we are spiritually weak and falter in our walk with God. Hence, this needs to be reminded again and again.

This versus reflect Paul's prayer for the believers in all these churches that they be stable and established by God's power through Christ's acts and the Holy Spirit's empowering to resist (1) the false teachers and (2) the persecution of a fallen world

Riches" are one of Paul's favorite terms to describe the grace of God in Christ. God's nature is the key to God's power and provisions.

The inner man" Spiritual growth is internal, but it is stimulated by external pressure. Paul often uses the contrast between the inner man and the outer man. The inner man is the spiritual aspect, while the outer man is the physical aspect. The inner man is already part of the New Age, the kingdom of God, but the outer man is still dying and struggling with the old age, the old fallen nature, and the fallen world system

Q5 (3:16-17) Why does Paul pray for strengthening of the inner man? How would we pray this prayer today? Why does he pray that Christ dwell in the believers' hearts? Isn't this already an established fact?

He prays for strengthening of the inner man because there are so many distractions in our world.  The rocky soil and the weeds really happen in our lives of faith.  (Mark 4) I loved your inclusion of the definition of dwell in the lesson, meaning permanent and not as a sojourner.  That is how we pray for those we have ministered to.  We rejoice when we hear they are walking stronger with the Lord and pray and pray when we hear it is not so. Yes, Christ is IN each heart, but does that heart turn more to Him or get waylaid? Jesus gave us an example of praying for others in His prayer in John 17.  I am compelled to pray for others, and the Spirit leads even in that.
