  1. Q4. (Matthew 6:8) If God knows what you need before you ask him, why should you ask him at all? What sense does prayer really make? Are we mainly to talk for our own edification and encouragement? Why or why not? We should ask God because He is the one to go to for all our needs. Although He knows what we need before we pray, it helps us in our faith, we are encouraged and our trust level in Him increases. Prayer is talking to God, if we allow Him, He does talk back.
  2. Q3. (Matthew 6:5-7) Why does Jesus tell us to pray in secret? Though public prayer in church gatherings is commanded in scripture (Acts 1:14; 2:42; 1 Timothy 2:1), in which circumstances might public prayer in a church service be contrary to the spirit of Jesus' instructions in these verses? How do flowery prayers hinder the development of disciples? Jesus tells us to pray in secret so that God can reward us openly. Doing it openly, we get the praises of men and that is our reward, which we do not want. Praying with others in a church service can be contrary to Jesus' teachings as one would be tempted to pray aloud and the spirit of praying 'better' would be displayed. Flowery prayers hinders a disciple development because the wrong motive is present..
  3. Q2. (Matthew 5:42 and 6:1-4) How does Jesus' teaching here and in 5:42 on giving to the needy influence you and your attitudes towards the poor? What will you do differently as a result? What keeps us from giving more to the poor? Is that a good enough reason? We are to be a blessing to those in need. It could be us in need of help. Scams and con-artists causes us to shy away from giving more to the poor. If we remember Jesus' words "pray for those who despitefully use you", we would obey him knowing it is in his hands.
  4. Q1. (Matthew 6:1-18) How do the commands in this section relate to "performing for the audience of One"? What is the antidote for the chief sin that is addressed here? In what ways do churches and non-profit organizations use this sin to motivate people to give? Performing for the audience of One is to do things quietly and secretly as unto the Lord. The antidote for the chief sin which is hypocrisy is to be real and do things in love. Churches and non-profit organizations motivate people to give by telling them to stand with a certain amount; and flashing their name on a screen.
  5. Q6. (Matthew 5:48) In the context, what do you think verse 48 means for the Christian? Is perfection taught here? Does maturity express the idea best? How about the doctrine of "sinless perfection"? How does verse 48 relate to verse 45? Verse 48 means spiritual maturity. Looking at Christ is perfection. Maturity does express the idea best as it is growth from the worldly stage to God's ways. One must strive daily to be like Christ. Christ loves us (christians and sinners) all alke
  6. Q5. (Matthew 5:39-44) If the principle that underlies verses 39-42 is found in verse 44 and 22:39, are there times we must defend ourselves physically against evil men in order to fulfill the principle? What might be some examples? Yes - in the case of self defense of yourself or family by someone trying to hurt you.
  7. Q4. (Matthew 5:38-42) If we were to assume that Jesus is teaching on retaliation and revenge rather than pacifism in verses 38-42, how would you sum up his teaching in a single sentence? Love conquers all.
  8. Q3. (Matthew 5:39-42) What do Jesus' examples or tiny cameos in verses 39-42 have in common? Someone has said that if we were to carry out verses 39-42 literally, we would aid and abet evil. Do you agree? How should we take these examples: As case law? As hyperbole? As a series of aphorisms or adages? In another way? Jesus' examples tell you to do more than you are asked to do which is showing love, after being insulted, oppressed and misused which is not aiding in evil. Case Law - Love your enemy; correct someone if they are wrong; don't take revenge; and don't hold grudges. Hyperbole - Turn the other cheek; if you are being sued for your tunic, let them have your cloak; you are forced to go a mile, go another mile. Aphorisms or adages - Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and send rain on both. We art to take these examples as the way Christ would have us to live in love for all.
  9. Q2. (Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:15-21) What was the purpose of the "Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth" regulation? Is this law designed to be administered by a court or judge, or by an individual? Is it designed to govern judicial action or personal action? The purpose of the "eye for an eye" regulation was to discourage the offender committing the act. This law is administered by a court or judge. It is designed to govern judicial action not for a person to take the law into their own hands which would lead to outlandish revenge.
  10. Q1. (Matthew 5:33-37) What does it mean: Let your "yes" be yes and your "no" be no? If we obeyed this command, what would be the result in our speaking? In our credibility? "Yes" means a definite yes, affirmative, positively in agreement; "no" means the same in the negative. In Other words, what you say, you mean it, it is the truth without anything being added to make it valid. We saying that we are telling the truth.
  11. Q6. The Church has always been supportive of those who are hurting or scarred. In Christ, we help people make the best of what is sometimes a difficult situation. What can you do to extend Christ's healing love to someone who is struggling in his or her marriage? What can you do to bring healing to someone who is or was divorced? To someone who is struggling in their marriage, I can encourage them with prayer and open ears with an objective understanding according to the Bible. Love and support with prayer can bring healing to someone who is or was divorced.
  12. Q5. (Matthew 19:9) Does a person who has remarried after a divorce that wasn't caused by marital unfaithfulness, live in a perpetual state of adultery? Should that person divorce or separate in order to get back into God's will? How can he or she get back into God's will, or is that no longer possible? A person who has remarried after a divorce that wasn't caused by marital unfaithfulness does not live in a perpetual state of adultery. To get back into God's will, the person only need to repent and go to God who forgives. They do not need to divorce or separate from the current spouse, just go forward in God.
  13. Q4. (Matthew 19:10) Why do you think Jesus' disciples reacted so negatively to his teaching on marriage and divorce? Did they misunderstand it? Jesus' disciples reacted so negatively to his teaching on marriage and divorce because they were under the Mosaic law teachings. They did not misunderstand it. You should marry with the intent to stay married.
  14. Q3. (Matthew 19:7-8) According to Jesus, does the Mosaic law command divorce? Does it allow or regulate it? Why does it allow divorce at all? What was God's original intention ("from the beginning") for marriage and divorce, according to Jesus? The Mosaic law does not command divorce. It was allowed because of the people's hardness of heart. God's intention was no divorce at all.
  15. Q2. (Matthew 19:4-6 quoting Genesis 2:24) Do people need to be Christians to be joined as one flesh? Is this making into "one flesh" accomplished by a religious ceremony or by natural law? Of those who have entered into a first marriage, what percentage do you think have been "joined together" by God, according to Jesus' statement in Matthew 19:6? People do not need to be Christians to be joined as one flesh as this is a natural law. I think that 40% of first marriages have been joined together by God as they stay married til death.
  16. With whom did Jesus side: Rabbi Hillel or Rabbi Shammai? What exception does Jesus give to his prohibition of divorce? How does this exception relate to Deuteronomy 24:1-4? Jesus sided with Rabbi Shammai who believed divorce in the case of unchastity. Fornication is the exception Jesus gave to the prohibition of divorce as it is unfaithfulness in marriage. This relates to Deut. 24:1-4 in that the first husband divorces her and she remarries. The second husband divorces her. The first husband cannot take her back as it is an abomination to God.
  17. The spirit of our age is very accepting and approving of lus+ According to Jesus' words, how seriously are we to take lus+? How does agape love help us combat lus+? Jesus wants us to take his words very seriously, for in his words there is life. Agape love helps us combat **** as the more we love God, the false love fades away. Like This Quote MultiQuote
  18. How would you counsel a brother who shared with you that he had trouble with pornogr*phy? How can you protect yourself against temptation over the Internet? At the beach or poolside? With your TV? I would not counsel a person who had trouble with ***********. I would encourage them to seek spiritual counseling from a pastor. I would encourage them to realize that the enemy is seeking to destroy them and that God is ever loving and kind wanting them to be free from that bondage; he is able and want to deliver them but they must go to him, repenting and seeking him with their all. They must not give up, victory will come. You can protect yourself against temptation over the internet by restricting those sites. Don't go to the beach or poolside. Restrict or block TV stations.
  19. What is wrong with pornogr*phy? What is wrong with going to prostitutes? Who are the victims of this "victimless" activity? *********** is a degrading tool for the viewer because it sucks their humanness and morality. They then start seeking for that kind of activity. Their heart and mind becomes distorted toward sex that anything goes with anyone. God created sex for marriage. The devil distorts and destroys. The book of proverbs points out the problems in going to a prostitute: false enjoyment, then death. Also, one makes himself one to a harlot, when he should be one with his or her mate only. In someway, we are all victims: the models, the ones who encourage such behavior by buying magazines, watching movies, talking favorably about it, internet, and those who are quiet about it.
  20. God purposely created us with a good and natural sexual desire. How do we distinguish between that God-given sexual desire and forbidden ****? God-given sexual desire is done in marriage with one's spouse, and forbidden **** is outside of marriage.
  21. What is the point of similarity between adultery and ****? What is the difference? How does **** break the Tenth Commandment? The point of similarity between adultery and **** is strongly desiring someone sexually. The difference is adultery is the physical act and **** is in the mind. **** breaks the 10th commandment because it is wanting something that belongs to someone else.
  22. Verses 21-22 are about murder, anger, and insult. Verses 23-24 discuss some fault against one's brother. Verses 25- 26 discuss settling a civil suit before going to court. What is the overarching theme of Jesus' teaching in our entire passage, verses 21-26? The overall theme of Jesus is forgiving and love what reconciliation is all about.
  23. What is the point of Jesus' parable of settling out of court? Who are we supposed to settle with, according to this parable? What does "settling" entail? What are the reasons that we should settle? Jesus' point of settling out of court gives you the power of reconciliation, saving you time, frustration and embarrassment to your family. We are to settle with the accuser. Settling entails talking with the accuser to come to an agreement for you to repay the debt. We should settle or we will be sent to jail where there is no mercy.
  24. What's wrong with worshipping while a brother has something against us (or us against a brother, Mark 11:25)? What is the appropriate action for us to take? How far should we go to bring about reconciliation with someone whom we have offended? Are there any situations that we shouldn't try to resolve? Or that we can't resolve? God does not receive your worship if you have an ought against your brother. We have to be reconciled to the brother. We have to go to him and ask forgiveness, then return to God and worship. You have to do all you can for reconciliation even if you are not at fault. If there are any situations that we can't resolve, at least an effort was made to do so. In that case, we must forgive them.
  25. Jesus treat calling someone a fool in the same classification as murder because it kills their spirit, their feelings or emotions have been insulted and damaged by bad characterization which can be associated with judging. Yes, this mean that murder is no worse than an angry insult in God's eyes. If we believed that angry attitudes towards others is viewed by God as murder, we would not say 90% of the things we say. In our upset moments, we would not speak, we would leave the situation quickly.
