  2. What is the difference between the "belief" of a demon and the "belief" of a practicing Christian? A demon believes in God because he knows he exists, but he lives in fear of him, whereas practicing Christians live in the warmth, joy, peace & love of the God who they have a personal relationship with & who they long to worship. The "belief" of a non-practicing Christian? A non-practicing Christian does not have the same relationship with God. They do not know him personally, but just know of him. It is sad to think people believe in God, but really don
  3. How can an extreme symbolic interpretation cause a person to have too little respect for the Lord's Supper and its elements? Perhaps they may be focusing more on the elements than the signifigance of them. It doesn
  4. To what degree are we responsible for the poor and needy in the church community? We are to be pro-active & put our faith into action in the care & needs of our brothers & sisters within the church, because if we can
  5. In what sense is faith dead if it is unaccompanied by action? If faith is not accompanied by action, it is merely a belief in something. In what sense might (if that were possible) it be alive? If it is not put into action, then I guess it could be alive to the degree that one might talk to others about God & their beliefs & therefore lead them to Christ. {then hopefully the new convert will put their faith into action & maybe be an example to the person who witnessed to them.}
  6. What do we miss in our understanding of God if we remove the metaphor of Father and Son from our church vocabulary? If we removed the metaphor of Father & Son, I believe we would miss the emphasis of God
  7. In what sense was God the Husband of Israel? God was the Husband of Israel in that the Israelites were his people & he watched over & cared for them as a husband watches over & cares for his wife. What is the New Testament extension of this metaphor? The New Testament refers to God as the bridegroom & the church as his bride. What causes God jealousy? Anything that is put before God & worshiping idols.

  9. In what sense is faith dead if it is unaccompanied by action? If faith is not accompanied by action, it is merely a belief in something. In what sense might (if that were possible) it be alive? Faith is putting what you believe & trust into action. Activating faith. It is a lifestyle by which you live.
  10. In what sense are Jesus and the Father one? Jesus is the Son of God, yet they are one. In what way was Jesus distinct from the Father? Jesus came to earth & lived in human form & prayed to the Father. Is Jesus God in the sense that the Father is God? Jesus & God are one in that Jesus is God in the flesh who came to earth to live as a man.
  11. How was the intimate way that Jesus taught his disciples about God as "Abba" and "Father" different from the Jews' understanding of God as Father? The Jewish Rabbis believed that only small children are taught to say
  12. What does the concept of "father" teach us about God, especially the formal way which the word is used in the Old Testament? In the Old Testament God is referred to as Father more so in the context of being our defender. According to the quote from Otfried Hofius above, which two aspects of a father underlie our understanding of Father in the Old Testament? We understand him to be the Father who rules over us & to whom we must show respect. Secondly he is the one who protects & supports us, giving us the help we need. How should they affect our behavior? We should go to him as we would our earthly father about things, without fear of being rejected etc. To have a reverence & a respect for him as Father & be in obedience to his ruling over our lives. To listen to him & hear what he has to tell us, because he is there to guide & help us in every aspect of our daily lives.

  14. Meditate on the concept of God as a Spring of Living Water or a Fountain of Living Water for you. What does this say about God? That God is a living god in whom there is life. We can be refreshed in God. About your thirst? That my thirst will be quenched, but I will have a continual flow of life giving, refreshing living water in my life, that will never run dry or stagnate. About your future? I have a future with my living God who will continually refresh me anew with his living waters of life.
  15. In what way is showing regard towards the wealthy (2:2-3) a denial of mercy? Extra credit: Read Hosea 6:6; Matthew 5:7; and 9:13. It is showing them a
  16. Why does James refer to the Great Commandment as the "Royal Law"? Because it is the law of God that Jesus centred his whole ministery around. It is no good keeping the Mosaic law if you do not keep the Royal law of loving everyone as you love yrself. The Mosaic law is easier to obey in many ways than the Royal law for some people, as it
  17. In what way does favoritism make one a judge? By favoritism we are in a way saying that those who we are not favoring do not match up to us, our standards or our expectations & therefore we are judging them. How dare we!!!!! Does God not say
  18. What kind of person or what kind of sinner do you tend to discriminate against? It automatically hits in when I see a dirty, raggedly dressed person that they should clean themselves up. I believed until a week ago that there was NO need for homelessness in this day & age in Australia with our Social Security system, etc, but then I spoke to a wonderful lady who has a flat, but chooses to sleep rough out on the streets a lot of the time with street folk who have nowhere to live. She explained to me why homelessness is so rampant in this day & age & it both saddens, concerns & disappoints me greatly that our Government have a lot to do with it. I now have a whole new respect for the homeless & a greater compassion. I also feel bad that I judged in the first place. As far as the sort of sinner I discriminate against, I don't believe I do discriminate for the mere fact that I too could find it so very, very easy to sin at any given time, but by the grace & strength God gives me I am able to stand against sin in my life & although I'm faaaar from perfect {thankfully} I know that I'm aiming to be all that God wants me to be & one of those things is to be compassionate to others who are swamped in sin. What kind of people are you (or your church) trying to make a good impression on? Neither my church, or I are not trying to impress anyone, but just eager to be Jesus to whoever comes to our church or to whoever we meet. My pastors are always running around ministering to & helping people, many who are disadvantaged.

  20. What is this "perfect law" that James mentions? The perfect law is to
  21. Why are we so easily fooled into thinking that listening to Bible teaching means that we are living out righteous lives? Sometimes we might think that we are listening to Bible teaching to confirm how on track we are, as opposed to where we can be corrected & directed by putting what we hear into practise in our daily lives. What is the nature of the self-deception? I believe sometimes too we can become very complacent with God's word & Bible teaching, because we hear everything repeated so many times in our Christian walk & in church services that we become complacent, as opposed to hearing it all in a fresh new way each time we hear it. God's word is living.
  22. In what sense are we given spiritual birth by the "word of truth"? Our spiritual birth was first & foremost an act of God
  23. Why do people blame God for evil? Because the think if he is the all powerful God, that he can destroy the devil get rid of all evil if he really wanted to. Does God tempt us with evil? No, but he allows it so we can grow stronger in Christ by being over comers in his strength. Does he tempt sinful people with evil? God doesn
  24. What value have trials had in your life? They have made me grow in different areas. Both stronger in God & for what I believe in. They have given me a boldness in certain areas. Also they have proven God
