Some of the results of the false doctrine were leadership crises among the elders and leaders of the church; a burning desire for wealth or greed; divisive asceticism from the Jews; destruction of the faith of some; and confusion and controversy that is destroying the unity and growth of the church.
Because of the doctrinal controversy, the people were unable to agree with those who opposed them doctrinely, and before long, their unity broke down and they were no longer living in God's loving manner. They got to the point they could no longer love the opposing party. The church lost its effectiveness when God couldn't work in their midst, because the people forgot how to forgive. All of this together blocks God's mercy and grace, and the church is no longer capable of carrying out its mission. God says we must live a life of humble forgiving, remembering our own sinful nature lest we too shall fall. it behooves us to avoid false doctrine entirely, and keep our focus on what is most important.
