Q3. Christ Became Poor

Recommended Posts

Q3. (2 Corinthians 8:9) What riches did Christ have according to this verse? How did he become poor? In what way were we poor? In what way have we become rich?

Our Lord Jesus Christ has a generous grace through which all who trust in Him become rich beyond anything this world has to offer.  Jesus set aside the trappings of being the Son of God or the King of the Universe to work with humanity, to set an example for humanity, and to die on the cross for the universal atonement of human sin.  So, Jesus, didn't participate in accumulating worldly riches, fame, and wealth  because that is not why He came to into this existence.  If you are God why do you need these things anyway?  God desires love from His creation.  The riches and wealth and their accompanying trappings in this world are cheap and corrupt imitations of the real thing found in Heaven/Kingdom of God.

Jesus rejected Satan's offers in the desert because they were no big deal to Him.  Jesus had all of that  and more.  Jesus didn't need shadows of true riches, meaning, pure fellowship, and love.  Jesus came from where it all originated -- the bigger and greater reality -- Heaven.

We have become rich in completeness, peace, reconciliation with God, and the promise of life eternal in the presence of God.

Q3. (2 Corinthians 8:9“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty
might become rich.” (8:9)
) What riches did Christ have according to this verse? How did he become poor? In what way were we poor? In what way have we become rich?

We were morally poor and lost in money, greed, ****, power, ans ultimately FEAR of everything. But he gave up everything to live a humble sacrificial life for all mankind.

Understanding His love, His intent, His motivation was all about us, as unworthy as we are at this moment. To receive and feel His unconditional love must indeed make us crazy in love with Him. It transcends any and all things we might hope for in this life. Yes we are rich beyond measure when we surrender to His loving hand. What a joy devine, leaning on the everlasting arms of Jesus!

Before Jesus came to earth he was the eternal son of God, present in the beginning (John 1.3) and seemly equal to but in some way the heir of God. As such he would have had eternal glory and power.  It would be to this one to which Isaiah praised in his vision in the inner temple. (Isaiah 6.5) Thus Paul uses the term wealth to anthropomorphically represent the state of the pre-incarnation Lord Jesus.

Jesus became poor by taking on the human form and leaving all his power and Glory behind him.

We were poor in that we were, before Christ, living under the power of sin and death but now we

The riches Christ had according to 2 Corinthians 8;9 is that though he was rich he had humbled himself and became poor for our sake. He had laid down his heavenly glory, took on a mortal body, was poor with no divine prerogatives, he died for us and through his grace we heirs to everything he possesses, eternal life with him in the Kingdom of heaven.

Jesus having stepped down from his heavenly glory, where he was the creator of the universe, one with the Father became man of no material wealth but a servant to proclaim the gospel of the good news of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Though Christ was poor he suffered and died for sins. Stepping down from his glory in heaven, he became a man of no wealth. Because he overcame the evil and sinful world he was spiritually rich. Thus as believers we become spiritually rich, living a life for Christ and through faith, hope and confidence that we will share eternal life with Christ.

Christ is sovereign over the earth. He rules, controls and "owns" everything, both material and spiritual. While Christ was on earth, He temporarily impoverished Himself, both materially and ... yes, spiritually, in the sense that He became fully human. When Christ was tempted in the desert, He was offered human power and wealth. These, He rejected.

We were poor before Christ sent His Spirit to indwell us. Now, we have access to His riches, both spiritual and material, though we don't avail ourselves of this inheritance to the degree we should. I don't think this verse is exclusively spiritual. It's in a context of material goods and MAY suggest that we have access to the world's goods as well as to spiritual riches.

I love the phrase, "the grace of giving."
