What do you think it meant to David? Have you ever received a visit from a friend when you needed it most? Jonathan still remains true to his earlier covenant with David. He remains his friend and encourages David. In fact promising David his loyalty when he, David is king. Jonathan is willing to submit to God's will in this whereas Saul is in rebellion and wants the kingdom for his family. Both Jonathan and David know that Saul will not hesitate to kill them if he finds out that there had been communication between them. David was greatly encouraged by Jonathan's actions and words.
