Q1. (2 Samuel 9:1-13)

Why does David honor Mephibosheth?

What does this teach us about David’s character?

a) David and Jonathan had a covenant between them that David would not

harm him or his descendents when he became King. David, on searching for

any descendant of Jonathan's was told of Mephibosheth by Ziba. David then

sent for Mephibosheth who was "lame in the feet". David would care for him

for the rest of his life.

B) David was a truthfull and honest person. He kept his part of the covenant

between him and Jonathan. He was true to his word that no harm would come

to Jonathan or his seed.

1a)He honoured Mephibosheth to honour the covenant that David made with Jonathan his father. "Do not ever cut off your kindness from my family -- not even when the LORD has cut off every one of David's enemies from the face of the earth." (1 Samuel 20:15) David asks him if anyone is left from Saul's family. Ziba informs him, "There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet" (9:3b).This son is named Mephibosheth.

b)This shows David is trustworthy, honourable, true to his word&dependable in keeping agreements made,a man of integrity. He is also willing to go against pattern of killing rightful heir of previous king Saul.

David follows through with his promise to Jonathan to take care of his family while he is king. David's story continues to reveal that he is a man of integrity and that he genuinely cared about Jonathan.  Jonathan is dead and we don't know if anyone knew about the promise, but David perseveres to help Mephibosheth.

Q1. (2 Samuel 9:1-13) Why does David honor Mephibosheth? What does this teach us about David’s character?

There are probably several reasons why David honored Mephibosheth. One reason might have been because off David's love for Jonathan the father. Another reason I might have been that David wanted to keep an eye upon Mephibosheth for he was a direct heir to King Saul the king prior to David. This was a standard practice in the days of the time.

The first reason would indicate that David was a kind and loving man. The second reason would seem to indicate that David was jealous of his power and authority and would do what was needed to keep control of the Kingdom.

David wanted to honor them, in memory of his friend Jonathan and out of respect for Saul.
Jonathan was the father of Mephibosheth
David had promised Saul that no harm would come to his family.  During this time in history, when one King took over another King’s throne, the new King would kill the entire family of the former King. This was to insure that the family of the old King would not try to regain the power they once had. This explains why Mephibosheth bowed down out of fear. This also explains why David comforted him and told him not to be afraid. The tradition of the time would have called for David to kill Mephibosheth. But David treated Mephibosheth as an honored guest. David didn’t follow tradition. He didn’t follow culture. He followed God.

David was honorable and keep his word to the convenant

Q1. (2 Samuel 9:1-13)

Why does David honor Mephibosheth?

David was true to his word. He had promised Jonathan that he would not cut off his offspring.  Mephibosheth was not killed as was the usual practice when a new king ascended the throne.  David trusted God not man.  We even see this when Ishbosheth ascended the throne. David did not kill him or take his throne from him.  David proved to be true to his word, not like Saul, whose word meant nothing.

David was honorable, but human, as was later seen.
