Matthew 12:34 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. Matthew 15:18 No matter how much religious practicing we do, our tongues are untamable. We can tame even the largest of animals, but we cannot tame what comes out of a person’s mouth because it “come from the heart, and these defile them.” Matthew 12:34 (NIV) However, we have the hope of taming the tongue through divine intervention and discipline. It is our personal responsibility to humble ourselves and get the help we need from God. The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.” Jeremiah 17:9-10 (NIV) In the verses of James we read, “out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” James 3:10-12 (NIV) These verses give us the hope of being able to tame our tongues. Purification of the heart and exercising self-control are factors in taming the tongue, but until God’s love changes the selfishness in our hearts we will still have an untamable tongue. Krissi Posted May 31, 2022 Report Share Posted May 31, 2022 The tongue is not untameable, though we speak what we think. This is fatalistic. As we control our thoughts, we control our speech. I think James is exaggerating to make a point. Paul says "... whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure ... think on these things." It's possible to tame the mind to think on these things, maybe not perfectly, but increasingly as we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit. I'm sure many people on this site are able to look back on what they thought and said when a younger Christian and know that they'd never think and say those things today as a mature(r) Christian. What has to happen before it can be tamed? Jesus reminds us that what is in our heart is revealed by what we say. A wicked heart will speak evil thoughts, while a heart filled with love will speak words of grace and righteousness (Matt 12:34). Jesus again tells us that the heart is the corrupt source of human motives and desires. It is here that impure thoughts, depraved words, and evil acts originate (Matt 15:18). In Luke 6:45 Jesus says: “The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45). So, whatever is spoken have their source in the heart. It is because of our total depravity that our hearts are filled with hatred, blasphemy, abuse, bitterness, jealousy, and pride, and our tongues are untameable. Before the tongue can be tamed our hearts need to be filled with goodness. Provers 4:23 tells us “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life”. Emphasising the importance of a clean thought life – as a man thinks, so is he. “That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved” (Rom 10:9-10). There needs to be a radical change of heart – a new birth. Once we put our trust in Jesus, we become a new creation (2 Cor 5:17), regenerated and renewed by the Holy Spirit. On our own we can never control the tongue, only by the Holy Spirit living within us can we ever hope to gain control over our tongue. As the Holy Spirit gains more and more control over our lives, as we become more and more like our Lord Jesus, will the fruit of the Spirit become more obvious for all to see (Gal 5:22-23). How does denial of "bitter envy" and "selfish ambition" prevent healing? How does boasting about these prevent healing? Bitter envy and selfish ambition characterise the worldly-wise person. They act according to the principles of this world, which embodies all the traits that the world glorify. This behaviour tells us there is no evidence of divine life within their heart – their hearts are defiled. Full of covetousness, greed, and self-centredness. We have the worldly person who is only interested in advancing his own interests. It is here that we also find confusion, disharmony and every other kind of evil. Directly opposite we have the wise and understanding person characterised by their humility, who manifest the life of Christ, and in whom the fruit of the Spirit is evident. We have the godly person who besides being wise, understanding, and humble, has a heart is full of righteousness. All this bitter envy and selfish ambition prevents healing of the heart since it is not wisdom that comes from heaven, but is earthy, unspiritual, and demonic. We need an antibiotic, a massive dose of humility. Better to self-medicate than wait for God’s remedy. same with boasting which is only promoting our self-worth – no humility here. The tongue is an unruly member because out the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak, unless we control what goes in our we will never be able to control out tongue. We must deal with the stink in our heart first which scripture says is deceitful and desperately wicked, so that what emanates from our mouth is pure. The tongue is untamable because like the paper on which the news is written, it is not the author; it is not the source. The tongue is just the final audio that reaches our eardrums. The author, the source is our storehouse of all evil or good thoughts and motives – the heart. A heart that is full of evil thoughts and motives will transmit these to be published by the tongue. What has to happen before it can be tamed? We have to confess our weakness and ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse our heart and fill it with thoughts and motives of righteousness. Jeremiah 17 v9 tells us ‘ The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.’ The natural leaning of human nature is towards evil. The only way we can control it is to come in humility to our Lord and Saviour and to ask Him to help us, we cannot do it on our own only in humility and Gods help will it be possible. Matthew is saying that whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart. What has to happen before it can be tamed? We must turn our lives over to Jesus Christ. The heart has to be tamed by self- control and by surrendering to the Lord Jesus and the tamed heart will pour out good speech to the tongue to speak out. Before the tongue can be tamed the heart needs to change. Much has been said and described in the answers and this is basically what it boils down to, . . . the heart needs to be regenerated for the tongue to come under control. In the verse Matthew 15:18-But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man-It refers to what comes out of your mouth ultimately comes from within. In verse Matthew 12:34-O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh-only Jesus Christ can create a clean heart.
