In what sense is the ascension the completion of the resurrection? I have seen many responses stating that the resurrection is the defeat of death and the ascension is the exaltation of the Father. But I feel that there is so much more, that this needs to be expounded further. The Resurrection is not only defeating death, it is creating a new life in us. Paul states in 2 Corinthians 5 that we have become a new creation, we are no longer the old sinful creature before Jesus came into our life. And by having new life, we no longer have a worldly point of view, but our focus becomes a Godly point of view. The Ascension allowed the Holy Spirit to come upon the disciples. If Jesus did not ascend, they would not be empowered to go and tell others the Good News. Those people would have to believe their words to be justified by faith (John 17:20). If Jesus had NOT gone away, it would be simple for everyone to just "go check Him out", see the risen Lord, and prove it. There would be nothing to believe or not believe, there would only be proof that everyone would go check out, so there would be no justification by faith. The 2 are tied together because the ascension IS the completion of the resurrection. After the resurrection, Jesus only appeared to His believers. But in order for the disciples to be empowered to spread the Gospel, they needed to see Him rise to Heaven in the same cloud of glory that God would appear when the Temple was commissioned in the Old Testament. The resurrection was Jesus victory over death. He conquered death. The ascension happened after the resurrection and he went to be back with the Father at his right hand. In the end he conquered death and went back home to be The Father. That completed the resurrection. He died, save us, and went back on the throne as God Almighty. Awesome. God deals with Christians “in” the person of Christ. What happens to Christ, affects us. That’s because salvation is found “in Christ.” Salvation is about JESUS, before it is about us. The resurrection is about JESUS, before it is about our salvation. Jesus resurrection is necessary for our salvation. Christ is raised, the first-fruits of others who will be raised. Jesus’ resurrection shows Christians the power of God but also teaches them not to be afraid of dying. The resurrection refers to Jesus coming back to life after being crucified. The ascension is Him rising up to Heaven after He returned to earth. The Scriptures frequently picture Him at the right hand of the Father; a position of honor and authority. His ascension was 40 days after his resurrection outside of Jerusalem. He was then take up to heaven and he sat at the right hand of God Mark 16:19) Jesus ascension was part of His resurrection from the dead. His ascension on the other hand refers to when he was taken back to heaven, seated at the right hand of his father. The two fit together because they illustrate his complete defeat of death & ultimate victory. He defeated death and the grave, then to top it off, he went back to his original position in heaven, the place of honour, God’s right hand.
