Q5. Naming the Child

Recommended Posts

Q5. (1:24-25)

What does Joseph accepting Mary as his wife say about his character?

What is the significance for prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David

that Joseph "named" the child "Jesus"?

a) Joseph was full of faith and obedient to God. He was a just and merciful

man and loved Mary and Jesus. By acception Mary as his wife shows him

to be a man who listened to God and acted in total obedience to God's will.

B) When Joseph named Jesus he acknowledged Jesus as his own son,

becoming His legal father. As such, Jesus had His father's ancestery as a

descendent of David's line and heir to the promises from God to David.

(Joseph's ancestor)

Joseph and Mary both are most righteous and obedient to God.  For Mary to listen to what Gabriel had to say and obey and for Joseph to listen and obey show high moral character.  Both were obedient to God and devout believers.  This is a most extraordinary event.  An impossibility for anyone but God.  These two believed.  The townspeople were making fun of them, but they continued on with what God wanted them to do.  When Jesus was born Joseph named him aloud Jesus.  By their laws by Joseph pronouncing the name he was adopting him into the family of David and giving him full rights as the first born.  Jesus was Joseph's earthly child.  Jesus was also David's earthly ancestor.

By accepting Mary as his wife we see Joseph as an upright and righteous man. He did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight. Jospeh was a man who had the wisdom of God , full of love, patience and understanding and submitted himself to God's holy will.

Joseph had his ancestral lineage from David. when he accepts Jesus as his own child he gives Jesus also the legal title and welcome into his ancestral lineage. He lovingly accepts Jesus from the hands of God and also gives him all his earthly inheritance and the prophecy gets fulfilled as Jesus the son of David.

The HOLY BIBLE says that Joseph was a rightous man; this means he was just , fair minded, and wanted to do what was right . Just as Mary was chosen to be the mother of our LORD , Joseph was chosen to be HIS father in name. Joseph was of the House of David and this made JESUS heir to his throne. We serve an Amazing GOD , who knows and plans all things for HIS purposes . I Thank HIM for revealing JESUS to me  ( Luke 10:21-24 ) Praise be to GOD !

By accepting Mary as his wife as directed God through the angel demonstrated that he was obedient and God fearing.

It was prophesied that the saviour would come from David's lineage. Thus by accepting to take Mary as wife and naming her child "Jesus", Joseph from the line of David became legally the father of the Lord Jesus and Jesus thus fulfilled the prophesy of being a descendant of David.

Joseph showed not only his compassion towards Mary but also his undivided faithfulness and obedience to God.

In two ways the name of "Jesus" tells us He came into this world to save and rescue God's people. Being a "son of David" Jesus arrived to bring the good news of redemption first to the Jews, and then later to all peoples of the world.

Joseph accepting Mary shows that he is npt self righteous bit righteous. He heats the word of God and obeys. He is trusting, he is honest and has self respect, he does what is right not what dociety would have him do.

Joseph in adopting Jesus is declaring that jesus is an heir of his and ad Joseph is a descendent of David so than is Jesus. Thos than filfils the prophesies to David s heirs.

Joseph accepting Mary as his wife says that he had an accepting character. In that day it probably took a lot of courage to do such a thing. The significance of the prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David is that God told David that he would have a decedent as the king of Israel from that time on.

Q5. (1:24-25) What does Joseph accepting Mary as his wife say about his character? What is the significance for prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David that Joseph "named" the child "Jesus"?

Joseph was very obedient to the direction given by the Lord. Joseph would have had a good reputation among his community. But by marrying Mary, he is jeopardizing his reputation, because the community gossip would accuse Joseph to be morally corrupt to have impregnated Mary before their marriage. In spite of his reputation being at stake, he willfully submits and obeys the instruction of the Lord. He discerned the voice of God all the three times God spoke to him, that we read in the scriptures and obeyed it without any reservation.

Joseph was the legal heir of David to whom God had promised an heir to sit on his throne forever. But during David’s descendant Jeconiah, God pronounces a curse that none of his descendants would sit on the throne ruling in Judah (Jeremiah 22:29-30). This corrupts the entire line below Jeconiah. So Joseph, even though legal heir to the throne had come under the corrupted line. So every son that he sired would be under the curse spoken by God Himself. But then God knew how to circumvent that problem. For Jesus was born through Mary, who also comes under the line of David through his son Nathan, but not corrupted by the curse. By naming Jesus, Joseph was adopting Him as his own Son and thus He became the legal heir to the throne but without the curse of Jeconiah.

In A.D. 70 the temple was destroyed and with it all the genealogical records which were kept in the temple. So there is no individual now who can claim to be heir to the throne of David other than Jesus, because only His genealogical records were preserved in the gospel records.

Q5. Joseph has faith in God and trusts His word that Jesus is begot by the Holy Spirit. This acceptance and trust allows Mary and Joseph to live happily as husband and wife. Again Joseph accepts Gods word and believes that Jesus is the Son of God and so Joseph adopts Jesus and Jesus inherits from Joseph the right to be of the’ line of David’ because Joseph is of the line of David.
