How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission? The results of false doctrines in the church of Ephesus were Leadership crisis among the elders (1 Timothy 3:1-7; 5:17-20), some of whom are false teachers (Acts 20:30). Desire for wealth -- greed (1 Timothy 6:6-10). Divisive asceticism from the Judaizers. Destruction of the faith of some (2 Timothy 2:18). Confusion and controversy that is disturbing the peace and unity of the church. Doctrinal controversy produces twisted, distorted Christians and division in the church. There was envy, strife ,evil suspicion, controversies,pride,& disunity among members. etc * Doctrinal controversy hurt the Spirit of the church, by producing twisted, distorted Christians who could not live straight Christian lives. *It prevents growth by starving the members of sound doctrine. * It keeps the church from focusing on it's mission of Evangelism by occupying it with mundane things & genealogies which lead to confusion. Zanele Tlhakanelo Posted January 10 Report Share Posted January 10 The results of the false doctrine caused leadership crisis among the elders while others began to become too greedy and their desire was more on wealth than teaching the Gospel of God's grace. The unity and peace of the church was disturbed by the controversy and confusion of these false teaching. Controversies do not promote God's work which is by faith but false teachers focus on quarrels about the law that they do not even understand, malicious talks, focus on unimportant matters which diverts the church direction and compromise evangelistic mission. It prevents growth as the focus is no longer on the true gospel of love, unity and peace but on petty matters that make people not to know the true Word of God's grace. The mission of producing healthy Christ-followers becomes disturbed and prevents Christians to mature in Christ and exhibit His life through their lives. The church had become a place of rancor and dispute. How does it prevent growth? Too much time is spend on controversies and quarrels about the WORD that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and too little time is spend on the pure WORD of GOD is inspired by HOLY SPIRIT. Teaches lies not the truth, topics they know nothing about. They have brought disagreements within the church. False doctrine or false teaching leads to lifestyle that is not in line with the correct word of God (leads to sin) Doctrinal controversy leads to among other things, division and disunity. They were arguing about things that had nothing to do about Jesus and the lessons that he taught. If there is a doctrinal controversy in the Church there is usually a person that is heading up the false doctrine and will drive a wedge in and get his followers to split the church. People will see that there is a controversy and will not want to get involved is the mess so they won’t join the church. There is a harmony that exists between sound doctrines, and any error in one will spread and result in the distortion of the others. Although these false doctrines were nothing severe like denying our Lord Jesus Christ, but more subtle like adhering to the ritual laws, and to Jewish myths and genealogies. Mixing Judaism and Christianity - law and grace. When Paul left the Ephesian elders for the last time, he told them that after his departure wolves in sheep’s clothing would come into the church. He knew that if neglected it would only get worse, and has to be nipped in the bud, otherwise it can spread like gangrene throughout the church. There was also their involvement in speculative controversies that resulted in the attention being taken away from the true faith. Time that could have been spent in the study of the Word was wasted. Not being Bible doctrine, there is no way of settling them decisively; the result of this teaching was envy, strife, dissension, slander, malicious talk, evil suspicions, and constant bickering … (1 Tim 6:4-5). This meaningless talk is a distraction from the main message of salvation in Jesus Christ. All which will hurt the spirit of the church and prevents its growth. We know from Acts 20:20 that these false teachers were from the church itself, probably the elders. They wanted leadership roles for their own satisfaction, not realizing that to be a servant of God requires humility. Seeking prestige, they tried to force a false, legalistic heresy upon the congregation. Churches that are not receiving constant systematic teaching of God’s Word become very vulnerable to all kinds of trouble, whereas constant encounter with the Word of God will result in growth in the lives of the church and its disciples. Sound doctrine will strengthen our devotion to our Heavenly Father; strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ; and result in the increase of our love for one another. There was quarrels and confusion among the people 2. The confusion brings fussing and breaks unity. 3. The minds of people will not be on God’s word or any truth which can cause bitterness, strife, and pride. 4. No time and energy is put in the right place to work together doing God’s will. The spirit of the church should be Christ centered - eg. ministry, teaching, salvation, healing, and love. But when personal ambitions, desires, pride and ego lead to" meaningless," "fruitless," "vain," and "empty" discussions the focus shifts away from Christ resulting in discourse, attitudes and behaviors that do not serve, honor or glorify God. This in turn strains, weakens and distances the church body's growing relationship with Christ such that growth is stunted or altogether halted. A church body that does not grow amounts to a kingdom of God that can not grow.
